Why Is Equal Opportunity Important Questions asked

Voting Question: What conflict in values is expressed by the phrase separate but equal?

"Today education is perhaps the most important function of state and local government....... It is the very foundation of good citizenship....... In these days, it is doubtful that any child may be expected to succeed in life if . . . denied the opportunity of an education. Such an opportunity, where the state has undertaken to provide it, is a right which must be made available to all on equal terms . . . . "We conclude that in the field of public education the doctrine of 'separate but equal' has no place. Therefore, we hold that the plaintiffs [people suing] . . . are . . . deprived of equal protection of the laws guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment." more

Resolved Question: Is "Liberalism" what "Liberals" Practice?

If it is then why aren't the liberals in America Practicing it? Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberalism Liberalism is a broad class of political philosophies that considers individual liberty and equality to be the most important political goals.[1] Liberalism emphasizes individual rights and equality of opportunity. Within liberalism, there are various streams of thought which compete over the use of the term "liberal" and may propose very different policies, but they are generally united by their support for political liberalism, which encompasses support for: freedom of thought and speech, limitations on the power of governments, the rule of law, an individual's right to private property,[2] and a transparent system of government.[3][4][5] All liberals, as well as some adherents of other political ideologies, support some variant of the form of government known as liberal democracy, with open and fair elections, where all citizens have equal rights by law.[6] more

Resolved Question: Transgenders, will you help form AHA (American Hermaphrodite Association)?

The purpose of AHA would be to work for the total social, political, and religious acceptance of transgenders (also known as androgyns, hermaphrodites, pseudo-hermaphrodites, and intersex). Some of you calling yourselves transgenders do not know about the science of the medical conditions you have that prove you are male in female body, female in male body, or a true hermaphrodite. Some of you calling yourselves transgenders do not know you were operated on as an infant to remove visible signs of your hermaphroditism and that your own parents have lied to you for years. Some of those parents are still keeping the truth from you because they are riddled with guilt for listening to the idiot doctors who said society will not accept you if this surgery to mutilate you is not done. Some of you do not know you are true hermaphrodites with neither a male (xy) or female (xx) chromosome pattern, but with an XXY or XYY pattern instead. AHA's goals would include: -- legislation at state and federal levels banning unnecessary "sexual corrective" surgery without consent of the person upon whom the surgery is to be done, who must be 18 years of age or older to make such decision and must receive two years of counseling services prior to surgery (as people who undergo sex change operations are required to do) -- legislation that chromosome pattern be used to determine sex and gender assignment of hermaphrodites, pseudo-hermaphrodites, and suspected hermaphrodites and pseudo-hermaphrodites -- legislation that chromosome pattern readings will be used to allow changes to sex and gender assignment incorrectly assumed at birth and recorded on birth certificate and other official records -- legislation that will allow for sex and gender assignment as a hermaphrodite (for those with chromosome patterns proving true hermaphroditism) rather than male or female on all official records and documents -- legislation that requires education on hermaphroditism and pseudo-hermaphroditism in the K-12 public school systems -- legislation that bans discrimination against hermaphrodites or pseudo-hermaphrodites and places harassment of them as a hate crime -- legislation that requires equal accommodations for hermaphrodites and pseudo-hermaphrodites in restroom and locker room facilities and in opportunities to participate in sports and other gender-segregated activities in publicly-funded schools and parks and recreation programs Some other important things the group could do is help educate the public about the growing rate of pseudo-hermaphroditism that will continue to acclerate because of the endocrine-disrupting industrial pollution. You can read about that on my website page where I have compiled a number of links to reports on scientific evidence about this: http://islamali.net/quranvscorruptions/hermaphrodites.html (The accelerating rate of pseudo-hermaphroditism is a prophecy of Islam in the prophecy of it becoming very difficult to distinguish between men and women; surprise, it is coming true thanks to the industrial pollution.) If you would like to help form AHA, please email me and let's figure out a way to organize ourselves using these useful modern technologies to our advantage. AHA is not a religious organization, but is more likely to be set up as a political action committee to specifically push for our rights through legislation. I want to be accepted by others and I want to marry the woman I love. I want the lie removed from my birth certificate and my legal name changed to a male name. I want my human rights! Who is with me? more

Voting Question: Please help with my letter?

Could you please help with my letter? Hello this is a letter that I wrote. Could you please fix any errors if it has any. I would really appreciate it. Also could you please give me a rating on this letter, whether it is bad or good or excellent? Thanks in Advance Here is my letter, Dear Pinks, How have you been? I miss you so much and I really need you; I am missing you all especially mum and dad. How are Tony and your husband doing? Say hi to all of them from me. After settling here in California, I have realized that I was thinking wrongly about our culture. Our culture was really a big shade for us to gather under; it was covering us all and protecting us from any unexpected dangers that many people without values fall into. It is extremely important here to stick with it. However, I still do not go along with it in several points. I still think that women should play sports without any pressure because they are equal to men. I don't think you can feel it as much as I do because you never experienced a problem like that before. Anyway, don't worry; my life is not too boring here. Unlike you, I am not planning to tie the knot yet; I still want to finish my courier first. However, if I want to do it later on, I'll do it in classic way, not too traditionally Indian because honestly, I do not like to have a wedding like yours! How is your baby doing? Tell him that your aunty has been receiving too many unexpected surprising awards and that she will go absolutely crazy because she still cannot believe herself utill now!!! Before around a month, the American scout has allocated a room for us in the WATB (Women American Team for Beginners) to play in. At the beginning I didn't like their coach and thought that he neglected me because he never commented on my play, but he always did for the other girls. After two weeks from then, and after hard training and lots of sweating, I was stunned when he gave me a pass to play in the Olympics. He never watched me play! Maybe I didn't notice that I was watched by him. I can't believe until now that he has selected me! WOW!!! Oh, not only me, but Jules as well. The following morning I went to confirm playing in the Olympics; I just couldn't wait for the tryouts during that week. Subsequently, after doing my best in the Olympics tryouts, I, Jules and eight of the other girls' names were summoned by the American football department. At eight in the morning yesterday we made our way up to the department to see what is hidden for us this time. It was another mind-boggling surprise and guess what? They have selected us to represent them in the international Women team for beginners. They said that we showed good playing skills and control on the ball. Don't get jealous, ha ha ha!!! Words can’t really describe how great an opportunity this is for me. I am so glad!! Without mum and dad, things wouldn't work out this way. I am so glad that I have taken this opportunity. Applying for the Olympics and playing for the beginners national team is just the start of my way. I will train everyday harder than before from six in the morning until nine. Three hours every day! I think that is enough? So try to contact me through my email address and send me the babies images; I can't wait till I see them. I wish you a success with every step and peace of mind with your little baby. Kiss my dad and mum and hug them for me till they die!! Yours sincerely Jessminder Bhamra By Mohammad Abdul Salam more

Resolved Question: Can you please proofread this?

“Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country,” were the words echoed by a famous martyr, John F. Kennedy. His words inspired a young generation of Americans to give back to their communities. People have a responsibility to make this country a better place for all to live and make sacrifices for those who don’t have privileges. His words still holds true. The value of community service is important, it benefits everyone, and it’s my way of life. Some people believe that volunteering is boring and worthless. However, this assumption is wrong. Volunteering is one of the best ways to reduce depression, make friends, and gain experience needed for a job. Many colleges and employers want people with experience, the skills that could be earned through volunteering. Volunteering benefits everyone; it raises confidence in the workplace, it builds character, reduces time constraint on employees, and it’s a great way to give back to communities. The benefit of community service outweighs the negatives. Cynthia Ozick once said, “We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.” Cynthia meant that one should appreciate their life, I would agree with her. I’m thankful for that I live in the United States and to live in the land of opportunity where food, money, and jobs are abundant. For some people who live the life of luxury, they become narrow minded that they see nothing below their lifestyles. A world away, there is a place that is hidden behind a curtain and if the curtain were to be lifted reality would be shown: poverty, wars, genocide, the problems are manmade, but they can be solved by man. I had volunteered at Regions Hospital for almost 2 years and I made many friends and gained experience. With the experience at Regions Hospital, I was able to get a job at a nursing home to save up for my future. “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country,” asks us to examine a question, what can we do to improve the lives of others and to become an equal contributor to this nation? As the essay as shown, volunteering is important, it benefits everyone, it builds character, and earns experience. The skills acquired by volunteering are needed to make America a better place for everyone. more

Resolved Question: What do you think of this?

It won't really matter any more een for misdemeanors, as most companies are now doing a back ground check. So then you are SOL any way. First of all, I want to point out that there are a lot of misconceptions being reiterated here, so I am posting to clarify several issues. Now I have been hearing about this new law, too. Mostly as a rumor. I haven't had time to check this out. But there is a very good reason behind taking the question off of applications. It is illegal by Federal Law to deny employment based on a crime that is not "substantially related" to the position's duties. There are some exceptions to this law, mostly healthcare, education/childcare, and law enforcement, but really not many. http://www.hirenetwork.org/fed_occ_restrictions.html There are also a lot of state restrictions, so knowing your states policies is also important. But here is the real issue: An employer cannot discriminate against the person for a crime not related to the position (with some exceptions), BUT is legally allowed to ask these questions on the application. So the ex-offender then finds him/herself in a Catch 22 situation: If the applicant lies, s/he risks being fired for being dishonest if hired and the lie is discovered. If they indicate that they did commit a crime, there is a very good chance that the employer will just file the application away. If ever asked, the employer will state that the person's qualifications weren't as good as other applicants and they were not considered. In other words they will lie, thereby breaking the law themselves! That is the irony of the situation. And with these circumstances the ex-offender can't win! So what is happening is that employers are discriminating and therefore breaking the law WHOLESALE. This is something that is entrenched in the corporate culture of most bigger companies. It goes all the way to the top! They all know that they are breaking the law, but there really isn't any way to catch them! So the discrimination that is taking place is not enforceable. The way the system works now is that they are supposed to make their hiring decisions without any consideration of any criminal record whatsoever. They are supposed to hire based on the applicants job-related merits (with exception to any affirmative action, but that's a whole different topic). They are supposed to make an offer BEFORE any drug tests or background checks are done, the actual hiring contingent upon the results. If the applicant accepts a job offer, then they run the tests and checks. When the results are obtained, they may reconsider based on the results and withdraw the offer. If this is done, they are REQUIRED BY LAW to issue what is called an "adverse action letter". The "adverse action letter" explains why an employment offer was withdrawn, and is legally binding. If a person was denied employment due to a conviction that wasn't "substantially related" to the position, they have a great case in Civil Court for employment discrimination. Every major corporation that I have dealt with has followed this policy quite strictly. The problem is that they usually don't have to deal with the dilemna of hiring ex-offenders because of the Catch 22 I mentioned above: Honesty equals no job interview, dishonesty equals an "adverse action letter" for lying on the application. So basically the only way to enforce the law is to remove the questions about criminal convictions from the applications altogether. Would the companies like this? Hell no! But it appears that somebody has finally realized that the companies are breaking the laws themselves to discriminate against ex-offenders. So how are they any better? And the public is getting sick and tired of corporate corruption, anyways. So that, in a nutshell, is the reason why they *might* be taking these questions off of applications. And even though I haven't verified whether this is true or not, it makes sense. I think initially that the real winners in this are going to be the ex-offenders and, of course, the employment lawyers. There will be a lot of lawsuits, especially initially. Eventually the companies will benefit after they get tired of getting socked with discrimination lawsuits and non-compliance fines, and finally are shown that hiring an ex-offender isn't much different than a non-offender. And finally society as a whole will benefit when there is less crime and recidivism due to lack of opportunity for ex-offenders, and hiring a former offender becomes less of an issue. more

Resolved Question: Am I a one nation or liberal conservative? (UK)?

I've been studying politics for quite a few years and I'm fairly convinced that I'm a conservative of some sort- I'm against interventionism, high levels of taxation, trade union strength, and allowing inflation to grow in order to enable higher levels of employment, I believe policing should be more punitive, and generally I belive in values such as individualism. However, my views differ from those of typical UK Conservatives in that I'm cautiously in favour of EU integration, I strongly believe in the value of many aspects of the UK welfare state (though some scaling-back is important), and I'm strongly in favour of open-door immigration. I also believe governments should work towards delivering more equal opportunity and focus on ending some forms of poverty. I'm also very against intervention in international affairs. So my question is- am I liberal conservative, or a one-nation conservative? Do I need to provide more info? more

Resolved Question: Would you join a Gay Rights Movement that does not argue for gay marriage?

Be you gay, bisexual, transsexual, curious, straight or otherwise, this question is for you. There is so much frenzy on gay marriage and the overt politics refuses to recognise diversity of opinion among gay people themselves - male and female. So if there should be an alternative; one that focuses on the EDUCATION of people to realise that sexuality is no ground for discrimination, not on 'resistance' or political campaigning, would you be a part of it? One of the things of course is that, as a group that welcomes opposition as helpful on the path to change, this group will not advocate the gay 'marriage' blanket, instead arguing for equal opportunity and recognition as a compulsory right, not a right that needs to be won. Instead of vociferously campaigning for gay marriage, thereby tainting and obscuring other much more important rights and responsibilities, this group would argue strongly and logically for an original ceremony, different from the current institution of marriage, which will recognise the union of love between same-sex couples. Every educated person should transcend categorisation based on sexuality, and that's what this will be premised upon. Gay marriage is not taken as an aim, but instead, the real substantive rights and obligations that come with the union of ALL couples. Answer and debate.Response: Is it possible that the sound of opposition when it comes to this issue is the sound of death? Arguments made in support of gay marriage sound callous most of the time. And if similar arguments should be made against the same issue all hell will break loose. Should we descend this low? If you observe the current institution of marriage, there's a myriad things that, if totally applied to same-sex couples (which is sure to happen if the trend becomes very widespread) will actually ridicule or disadvantage them. Gay people have produced knowledge for the world over years and this knowledge has gone straight to the mainstream. Now is the time to 'distract' the current simplistic movement and construct a unique and original ceremony for ourselves. One that will have exactly the same value as marriage before the law, and represent our diversity and uniqueness a lot more. Not separate but equal. But Equal. Just like Christian majorities & Atheists in most civilised societies. more

Resolved Question: Over 1500 civilians escaped LTTE today. Why are field realities so different from LTTE reports?

Because they are lies. Thank goodness that the confirmations via evacuations speaks of a different story than what was reported by the LTTE http://www.hindu.com/2009/05/11/stories/2009051154701000.htm http://www.colombopage.com/archive_09/May10152717RA.html What is really confounding is how these terrorists and “militants” get their hands on the same weapons and utilize them in a sequential manner. In Sri Lanka it was reported that the LTTE was burning out large areas for illumination and cover when they are retreating from the deathly mine laden bunds/moats that they erect. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090510/ap_on_re_as/as_afghanistan http://www.sundaytimes.lk/090510/News/sundaytimesnews_18.html The main fallacy within this construct is that it blames entire countries for actions of individuals and groups. I believe that Janaka Perera is trying to make political hay and if you have followed his stream you would realize that he has a rigid, specific agenda that has nothing to do with Asian Security. Gothyaba Rajapaksa has a much better handle on how to retain good relationships with our neighbors whilst protecting security for Sri Lanka, the region and internationally. You will not be taking my programme and reworking it regardless of how many names you drop or are affiliated with. You want to lambaste the USA for attending to a conflict that it was duty bound to do? I will tell you to take a glimmer of hell without the USA. Those men and women from the USA did not know about ancient battles and that people were being moved to fight on events from thousands of years past and that there was a force that was trying to reawaken every ancient battle without considering all of our ancient Treatise of Peace. That is why those were reaffirmed last year. I tire of narrowness of men that have spent so much rime on one track that they cannot see past, you will never convince me that you words are a reflection of Champika. There was a challenge given to Afghanistan to grow food instead of opium so that those men would have a legitimate livelihood that did not require extremism to protect. That was supported from Araby to beyond Japan to the Americas – that was funded and there were opportunities created for it to take root and grow. There were major supports not only in segments of Taliban but also many other warring groups in the region. This support was inclusive to wide groups of peoples that believe it is more important to promote food crop growth than opiates as we are in a world food crisis. What or who blocked it? I am asking Rohitha not to get into an inbroglio for Janaka Perera or Ranil Wickremesinghe for it is well know that these purported enemies of today were bosom buddies day before last. As it is well known who holds their lead which in American parlance is known as the leash. One man's think tank is another man's asylum - that is why when I was asked to sit at RAND, I twice politely refused. That is why when I was invited to "observe" at Bildenberg - I sent Champy. It is also why when there are those that want to blame Nirval Cabraal for the Gold Key mess, I just point that the mess is billions more than Gold Key and that my peoples want their money back. This is why though I may not agree with everything that congress or political personalities may say - and as of late many have shown their derierres for supporting terrorist organizations that I support unstintingly equal rights and protections under the law, freedom of religion with the distinction between religion and cults, the right to free speech as long as it does not violate other basic rights, the rights of each child to grow up in a world with potential, the sovereign rights and obligations of sovereign nations to bring basic services such as electricity, education, roads, jobs, a revenue stream and tax base for continuation of progress to peoples in their lands. Now the LTTE is saying there is a hepatitis outbreak amongst infants in the terrorist held zone. I say release the peoples because we have staffs that are very capable of treating them. I also say that the intraveneous drug use that you have subjected these mothers to - you will dearly pay for. For years we have been been tracing heroin smuggling between India and Sri Lanka and the region; thus far the Nadesans, Pabraharakans, Balsinghams, Alprusalgams etc. of India have not been netted but we do know many of them live in Chennai and want free zones to transport drugs. Why is that not acceptable? Because all the arms running, the human trafficking, bank and credit card fraud, identity theft, usurping of lands and resources are not involved. Resolved Question: Under these definitions, don't you agree "Liberal" is the right way the Founding Fathers would want America?

Liberalism is a broad class of political philosophies that considers individual liberty and equality to be the most important political goals.Liberalism emphasizes individual rights and equality of opportunity, freedom of thought and speech, limitations on the power of governments, the rule of law, an individual's right to private property, and a transparent system of government.Liberalism has its roots in the Age of Enlightenment(etc.Founding Fathers, American Declaration of Independence, the United States Bill of Rights)in which reason was advocated as the primary source and legitimacy for authority and rejects many foundational assumptions that dominated most earlier theories of government, established religion. Conservatism is a political and social term from the Latin verb conservare meaning to save or preserve. As the name suggests it usually indicates support for tradition and traditional values ,fiscal conservatism, supply-side economics, social conservatism, libertarian conservatism, bioconservatism and religious conservatism,as well as support for a strong military.US President Abraham Lincoln wrote, that conservatism is "the adherence to the old and tried, against the new and untried."social conservatives emphasize traditional views of social units such as the family, church, or locale, many religious conservatives believe that government should have a role in defending moral values, lower taxes and government spending. Some of what conservatives and libertarians consider victimless crimes such as sodomy have been decriminalized in the United States. Some states and local governments have relaxed laws on marijuana use and medical marijuana, though conservatives and some libertarians argue that the War on Drugs still constitutes one of the greatest threats to liberty in the United States as a whole. Voting Question: how do you feel about The Pendulum Effect?

1.Step 1: A civil rights need is born For complex historical reasons beyond the scope of this article, a civil rights need is identified on behalf of a group. The pendulum effect is viewed as bipolarity between two groups. With the group on the left deemed as being the oppressed group and the group in the right as being the oppressors. The relationship may be between women and men, blacks and whites or homosexuals and heterosexuals. 2.Step 2: The legitimate phase of the movement The oppressed group does indeed suffer from legitimate grievances. They become aware of the need to change their standing and push the pendulum of equal rights with their actions, to correct these grievances and to improve their image in the zeitgeist. They face some resistance from either side, but they also face a lot of support from the oppressor side, who truly emphasises with their plight. This is the legitimate stage of the movement as the oppressed side gains the rights that they clearly should have. Luminaries of the men’s right movement such as Glenn Sacks and Warren Farrell freely admit that there are genuine gains that feminism has achieved, things such as legislation that codifies the right to equal pay such as the equal pay act of 1963 in the U.S. and 1970 in the U.K., the right to own property and to object to genuinely misogynistic attitudes as can be seen in the old style advertisements and public service announcements. I agree with this attitude personally. There is no such thing as a civil rights movement that has done no good. This is the legitimate and honourable stage of the movement. The pendulum is even. 3.Step 3: The illegitimate phase of the movement The transition between this step and the last is hard to identify as the oppressed group transitions from generally doing good to doing bad. The oppressed group now has a respected and powerful lobby acting on its behalf that can affect the law, at this point no reasonable person could describe the group as being “oppressed” anymore, but the movement has turned into an industry of grievance mining, looking under every rock for signs of oppression and slights. It is important to emphasise the members of the group are not lying to keep up the appearance if being oppressed, they truly believe it, but they are in too deep and lack the ability to holistically view the progress that their group has made, to take “yes” for an answer. The “oppressions” that their group supposedly suffers become more and more academic and created out of whole cloth. The goals of the group come more from the radical activist members, who mostly reside in academia. Issues that they choose to fight for include things such as redefining language, redefining history, redefining their definition of oppression and re-characterising the successes of the movement into further examples of oppression. A prime example of manufacturing problems is to me, one of the most reprehensible aspects of modern feminism. This is where feminism has achieved a world where women have no less opportunity than men, can take any degree they want to and choose their own career. And then when women do not flock to careers that feminists want them to, they cites this as proof of work that still needs to be done for women’s rights. I think that women who feel empowered to enter the fields they want to enter means that the work of women’s rights is mostly done. To spin the liberation of women into an attempt to further victimise them is a disgusting act that is to spit in the eye of the good achievements that feminism has made. The worst effect of this illegitimate phase of the movement is to brainwash the younger members of the group into hating men. The feminists have already refined history and distorted the facts to where, as a feminist said in an email to me, half of women are raped and the fraction of feminist haters dwindles in comparison to the number of men who hate women. Yeah, we sure are terrible. None of this has any relation to the truth but what is to be the expected outcome if a young woman is told that men as such beasts? I’ll tell you the outcome because I saw it firsthand when I graduated in 2005. The young women I went to university with were angry, they were petulant and a hostile and felt the need to partake in constant belittling comments and man bashing. With an angry youth, the road is paved to the next step. 4.Step 4: The oppression of the oppressors The discourse has become one sided. The feminists are seen as the authorities in the problem of equality as the status quo is viewed as being sexist and thus un-needing of representation. The feminists are now running a dictatorship of opinion and with a background noise of resentment and manufactured oppressions they start to act in a very hypocritical way. The true idea of equality has been lost, they have a new definition of the word. Equality of outcome. Sameness. Departments of women’s health spring up, ministers more

Resolved Question: Can you PLEASE not delete my essay below?

I need to print it out at my school library. I can't access my email there, and my printer doesn't work at home. Were Nora’s Actions (from “A Doll’s House by Ibsen) Justified? It was in the “action-packed” living room of Nora and Torvald where all of Nora’s actions unfolded during the course of Ibsen’s play “A Doll’s House”. They key word here is “actions” because Nora did a lot in just three acts of a play. She went from seemingly innocuous actions such as sheepishly lying about eating macaroons to the far more grave involvement with the blackmailing Krogstad and the attempted concealment of the forged loan note from her husband. But her ultimate action was a simple one: she walked out of her home and slammed the door. It is this act that will be discussed because it is the ultimate response, a proxy for all the activity of the play. And it is this final maneuver that I assert was unjustified. There is evidence in the play that Nora could have chosen an alternate outcome that would have been beneficial to all involved, especially her. Before discussion of any alternate outcome, it is important to admit that Nora did have reason to feel she was treated poorly, like a child, and given no opportunity to better herself or have a legitimate intellectual engagement with Torvald. This was standard fare during the time and place of the play. It was the rule and not the exception. Perhaps not the rule during this time was the growing rebellion of Nora starting from the aforementioned consumption of macaroons to her adult discussions and plotting (away from her husband) with Mrs. Linde and Dr. Rank. It is clear that Nora’s understanding of her frustrating and constricting relationship with Torvald is crystallizing in her mind as events unfurl, culminating in a final argument when Torvald reads the original mail containing the blackmail threat (to be later rescinded by Krogstatd). But it is this final argument with her husband that could have been a turning point instead of a point of no return. In Act 3, after Torvald had burned the contract, the couple discussed the situation in a serious adult manner. Torvald does show evidence that he is willing to change, namely, to treat Nora in a more respectful manner. Nora with her growing wisdom had the opportunity to at least listen further. She was in a position of strength and could have bargained on her own behalf to gain greater assurance from Torvald that she be treated more as an equal. Admittedly, marriage counselors were not around in Nora’s era, but maybe seeking the counsel of the wise Mrs. Linde would have be useful. The point is Nora was unwilling to try to save her marriage and in that regard the fact that the preponderance of her relationship’s downfall was due to Torvald is irrelevant. Besides, there were other reasons for Nora to make an effort to save her marriage. Those reasons are the three children. It was selfish for Nora to abandon them since she claims to have loved them dearly. If we put the issue of selfishness aside, there is something worse. Nora was being hypocritical about her actions as well. She felt she was not raised with dignity by her father, again, always being treated like a pet or doll. By vanishing from the scene, Nora ensures that her children, especially the girl, will not be raised in the best way. There is no reason to suppose that the nanny will not follow the will of Torvald. In summary, I have stated my reasons that Nora made a bad choice in walking out the door, in particular, not taking the opportunity to explore reconciliation with Torval that would improve the marriage and sustaining the loss of her children. If I am allowed the fantasy of writing the sequel to “A Doll’s House”, there is no great evidence to predict that Nora would have been successful after she left the house. She had little money, no occupation, and was entering a hostile (especially to women) world. True, she had her dignity, but you cannot get nourishment and shelter from an abstract quality. In short, Nora’s final action was not justified and would have led to a bad outcome for her and her children. more

Resolved Question: Is Barack Obama Really a Liberal?

Liberalism is a broad class of political philosophies that considers individual liberty and equality to be the most important political goals.[1] Liberalism emphasizes individual rights and equality of opportunity. Within liberalism, there are various streams of thought which compete over the use of the term "liberal" and may propose very different policies, but they are generally united by their support for constitutional liberalism, which encompasses support for: freedom of thought and speech, limitations on the power of governments, the rule of law, an individuals right to private property,[2] and a transparent system of government.[3][4][5] All liberals, as well as some adherents of other political ideologies, support some variant of the form of government known as liberal democracy, with open and fair elections, where all citizens have equal rights by law.[ "their support for constitutional liberalism, which encompasses support for: freedom of thought and speech, limitations on the power of governments, the rule of law, an individuals right to private property" Obama Is pretty much going agianst all of these liberal principles according to conservatives. Why do conservatives call him a liberal. They say he is pushing for more goverment, telling people not to listen to Limbaugh, and minimal transparancy with the stimulus money. How is he a liberal according to wikipedia's definition? more

Resolved Question: Which would you prefer? Wedding Brunch or Clambake?

I need some opinions. We're torn between doing a brunch or a clambake and there are equal pros and cons to both. We're having our wedding in a historical barn on an orchard and it's very Jane Austen/English countryside. It's in New England and we have a lot of guests coming in from out of state. We're torn between doing a clambake or a brunch. If we do a brunch people would have to arrive the Friday night before but would then have the rest of the afternoon to visit the area, drive home, spend time with family, etc. With a brunch we'd also be able to fly out that night for our honeymoon. With a brunch we'd also save a lot of money and not have to worry about a bar (we have friends and family who are alcoholics). It would also keep most of the weekend free for people. (also kids wouldn't be as cranky as they can get at a night-time wedding) It would be around 11am though which may be tough for people and would be a little cool out, and none of that evening wedding atmosphere. However, if we did a brunch we'd save so much money that we could invite more people and get better quality food, and have more money for the honeymoon and to put into savings. If we were to do a clambake it would be in the early evening and people would have to stay Saturday night. It would leave less time for people to socialize later on, but everyone is really excited about the possibility of having a traditional New England clambake. Doing it later means we'll probably have more people dancing (which is important) and the twinkle-lights in the barn would have more of an effect. Because of the novelty of the event we'd probably get more of our friends to make the long haul for it. Doing it later also means that we'd have to stay the night and go to the honeymoon the next morning or leave really late and get in even later. But we'd also have the opportunity to have a few people over my parent's house for a small post-wedding get together and bonfire which would be super fun! But is also means a bar, food that is very messy, and expensive. I think the brunch would fit more with the setting and atmosphere but I think, being in New England, the clambake lends well to the atmosphere as well. ARG! Help! I love both, I love the idea of doing a brunch as we LOVE breakfast foods and there are so many advantages, but we love seafood and think it would be more of a draw. Also we're worried about expenses, as the brunch would average about $40-45 a person and the clambake would be around $60-70 a person. Help! I need thoughts and opinions! more

Voting Question: Hi, Can you fix my grammer in this essay?

Hi, I'm an international student who stayed in the U.S. for 1.5 years Can you fix my grammer or fix some unnatural spots. You can change the whole sentence if you think the sentence is awkward. “Life is like a repetition of tests” My dad once told me that, and the quote was so true. As a high school student, I took hundreds quizzes and tests in many different subjects. Last year, I spent days and nights to study my AP biology test, and, this year, I’m burning my midnight oil to get a good grade on English tests and quizzes. Such tests can assess students’ understanding of a subject or evaluate the depth of knowledge. Other than the school tests, to achieve higher educations, students have to take “assessment” tests such as SAT, ACT, and GRE. Generally, the assessment tests’ purpose is testing one’s basic educational understanding. If one gets high score, that means, one is ready to go to good higher-educational institutions. The assessment tests, however, have both positive and negative aspects. The test made college or graduate school acceptance process much easier and quicker. By taking the assessment test, one can evaluate one’s understanding of both English and math, and, additionally, one can compare one’s score to other intelligent students in the other parts of the country. Also colleges and graduate schools can analyze the applicants by the score of the assessment test. Because of the applicants’ varieties and different personalities, it is hard for the institutions to analyze their applicants generally, but by using the score of the assessment tests, the institutions can evaluate their applicants easily. The assessment tests are also world-widely using way. In Asian countries such as Korea and Japan, high school students are dedicating themselves to get a good score on a “college-acceptance test”. Additionally, many countries in Europe have similar assessment test that can analyze the students’ general understanding. Taking an assessment test is universally well-using way of analyzing applicants of higher-educational institutions. Even though the assessment test is well-known and easy way of analyzing students, there are many negative aspects of the test. Some institutions just care about the test score, but, in actuality, the test score does not mention applicant’s personality or other important facts about him. For example, SAT, which contains math, reading, and writing sections, can tell an applicant’s math, reading, and writing skills, but it cannot tell an applicant’s other important and valuable facts such as leadership, diligence, and ambition. Also, the test score can be affected by many external sources. International students, obviously, have some penalties in reading and writing sections. Additionally, if a test taker’s condition is not good on the test day, he may have a hard time going through the long assessment test. Nowadays, students are like slaves who are tied up by many different tests. The tests, however, are good sources of analyzing their general understanding and depth of knowledge, but sometimes it can be illogical and incomprehensive. It is hard to change the system of taking assessment test, because the taking the assessment test was appropriate since long time ago. To make brighter future and comprehensive society, however, testing company’s goal has to be changed from increasing its budget to making more comprehensive tests with no penalties or obstacles. The assessment tests have to be tests with equal opportunities for every student. more

Resolved Question: what does this phrase mean to “promote diversity”?

"Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has thrown her support to an amendment in a Senate bill that directs the FCC to explicitly “take actions to encourage and promote diversity in communication media ownership and to ensure that broadcast station licenses are used in the public interest,” according to CNS News." The amendment has become known as the Durbin amendment, after its sponsor, Senate Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin, D-Ill. “Certainly, I support Mr. Durbin in most things,” Pelosi told CNS News. “Diversity in media ownership is very, very, important.” The amendment is clearly an attempt to revive the Fairness Doctrine – an unpopular FCC regulation removed in 1987 that forced broadcasters to grant equal airtime to opposing political viewpoints, Republican Rep. Mike Pence told CNS News. personally, i believe that the liberals hate diversity, they only want those who are in lock step with their opinions to have a voice. free speech is our right and those who would regulate it are trampling the Constitution. when you silence one segment of society, then it becomes much easier to silence another. everyone has the opportunity to be a talk show host, the market will determine their success or failure. what is so wrong with that unless you fear other opinion. there is nothing Fair about the Fairness Doctrine. more

Voting Question: Bank accused of sexism after female staff advised not to dress like protitutes...?

THE Bank of England has been accused of "institutional sexism" after it held a seminar for female staff advising them on what clothing, shoes and makeup to wear. The controversial advice was given during a "Dress for Success" event, at which female staff were lectured on the importance of wearing appropriate jewellery and makeup at work. A memo leaked from the meeting last Wednesday details the advice giADVERTISEMENTven to staff, including the warning that wearing certain accessories would make women workers look like prostitutes. "Look professional, not fashionable, be careful with perfume, always wear a heel of some sort – maximum two inches, always wear some sort of makeup, even if it's just lipstick," the memo said. It was distributed by a professional image consultancy firm hired by the Bank. The memo added: "Shoes and skirt must be the same colour. No-nos include ankle chains – professional but not the one you want to be associated with, white high heels, overstuffed handbags, an overload of rings and double pierced ears." Leading equal opportunities solicitors said female employees would have a potential case for legal action against the Bank for sexual discrimination. Lawrence Davies, of solicitors Equal Justice, said: "It is indicative of an institutionally sexist environment. If women are being judged by what they wear then it suggests they are being treated differently to males." However, Pippa Rees, director of Naked Ambition Personal Branding Consultants, said how you looked was important for success. "How you dress can make you have more authority and command more respect," she said. ************Can you give me your opinions? Thx *************************** more

Resolved Question: Why do people assume that under socialism, people who dont work will be rewarded?

If you do not work, you will have equal access to resources. Socialism, unlike capitalism, provides equal opportunities. If you choose not to maximize your potential, you will face consequences. The difference between socialism and capitalism is that capitalism creates many circumstances in which people are spiralled into that prevents them from succeeding. For example, say you were born into a poor family. Because you are poor, you do not get adequate nutrition. Without proper nutrients, you will not be able to achieve at school. You may not study as much as you could because you have to get a job to help to support the family. You wouldn't be able to get scholarships because of your poor grades. Without good grades and money, you cannot go to college. Without a college education, you are severely limited in opportunities. Your parents may have divorced and your mother may provide most of your essentials. Because of lack of medical care, your mother could develop a late stage of cancer that could have been treated had she went for early treatment. Because she couldn't afford it, she would wait until it is too late and then die. You, as you are 18 years old, would have to take care of the other children because you didn't want them to end up in foster care, as there is nobody else to take care of them. Because of this new responsibility, you have to take on 2 jobs to afford them- and there goes your opportunity. These children may be spiralled into the same cycle. You may resort to crime because you have no other way to take care of them. Under capitalism, people like that are the result of poor cirumstances. These people may work hard, but haven't the ability to improve their life. On the other hand, you may inheirt a large sum of money because your parents were rich because their parents were rich because of their parents were rich, etc. Thus you will be able to afford college, have access to adequate healthcare, and live a better quality of life. How should that person be rewarded more than the first scenario? Under socialism, so long as your contribute to society, you will be rewarded. If you choose not to, you will not have access to resources. This will be decided by a democratically elected commitee. All jobs are important because they all help society in some way. If a job could be replaced by technology, it would be. So, really, what system rewards hard work? more

Resolved Question: Please Help?

Sexual harassment is one of the biggest problems facing schools and businesses today. A week rarely goes by without a remainder of the pervasiveness of sexual harassment as a social problem. Sexual harassment is a growing problem in government agencies, schools, and corporations worldwide. Many corporations are adopting new anti-harassment policies, as are schools and agencies. They definition of sexual harassment is any unwanted or inappropriate sexual attention. It includes touching, looks, comments or gestures. A key part of sexual harassment is that it is one-sided and unwanted. Employers and administrators have a duty to investigate allegations of sexual harassment. An increasing number of companies are searching for new ways to protect themselves against these allegations. Many more corporations around the county are adopting their own anti-harassment and implementing ever clearer definitions of sexual harassment to combat this growing problem. Chief Executive Officers should do a variety of things to stop sexual harassment in the workplace. The most important thing is for upper-level management to make it clear to workers that harassment of any kind will not be tolerated. If top managers don't take the issues seriously, employees wont either. Managers must also understand that they are responsible for their employees. Companies need an explicit written policy on sexual harassment that is widely available in the workplace. Most consultants advise companies to do more than just to post the policy on bulletin board. They say that the policy should be repeatedly distributed in new employee orientation packets. Employees should have clear definitions of what sexual harassment includes and what it doesn't include. Many companies are now offering employee training sessions on sexual harassment and many say that the follow-up training is a good idea. Training programs should include all employees, rather than just the managers. The tone should not be specifically apply to males or females and the meeting should avoid heavy discussions of male harassment that might cause some resentment among the male employees. Many times programs arent effective because a lot time is spent attacking men and not the crime . Companies need a good system to deal with complains. A clear process for handling complaints shows that a company takes them seriously. Until 1991, it was hard for women to make allegations of sexual harassment since they often felt that there was nothing they could do about it. During the fall of 1991, the subject of sexual harassment attracted news headlines. Everyone began discussing the issue and emotions ran high. However, the highly publicized hearings that involved Clarence Thomas and Anita hill changed everything. Judge Clarence Thomas was nominated to be a Supreme Court Justice. Supreme Court Justices have their jobs for life and cannot be fired. Before a person can be made a Justice, he or she must be questions and approved by Congress. judge Thomas had once been the head of a U.S. agency called the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The EEOC makes sure everyone is treated fairly when applying for a job. It also enforces laws against sexual harassment. Anita Hill is a law professor. She worked with the judge thomas at the EEOC many years ago. A few weeks into the congressional investigation, she came forward and accused him of sexual harassment. She claimed that she used to constantly ask her for dates and spoke to her about pornographic films he had seen. Anita hill said that while she was deeply offended by these remark she felt that she could not complain because thomas was her boss. She though that her career could be in trouble if she made a cuss. Anita Hill was a very believable witness, but Judge THOMAS DENIED HER charges in the strongest possible terms. WHo was telling the truth. The country was divided. The issue was being discussed everywhere. Women from all across the nation told of their experiences with sexual harassment and many mend admitted to being insensitive to this issue. Finally the senate voted to approved Judge Thomas but the vote was close. Many senators had doubts about Thomas character. Others did not think that his career should be destroyed because of one persons story. They said there was not enough evidence to prove that there was wrongdoing. In the end, nearly everyone agreed that sexual harassment is a serious problem to which everyone must become more sensitive. Women are not the only victims are sexual harassment. More and more men are being harassed in the workplace, classrooms, and locker rooms. Men can be victimized by both women and / or other men. THere are other ways to avoid being sexually harassed. For example keep your relationships at work strictly on business level. If you work in the same room as the harasser, somehow create a barrier between the two work stations. Do not ask for personal favors or special treatment from the harasser so that hthat he or she will not feel owed anything. Do not talk about anything personal. Sexual harassment is always wrong . No one deserves it. It is always hurtful to the victim. If everyone confronts this problem men and women would be able to work better together at school, and At work. They would be able to build less stressful relationships. Do not be afraid to report it. The sooner you complain, the problem will be resolved. Resolved Question: What does a degree in GWS Get You? From the University Of Georgia Website Is this True?

Should Taxpayers Pay for this at State Universities and Colleges? Career Opportunities for Women's Studies Majors 1. What You Can Do with a Degree in Women's Studies A. Employment Skills You Gain With a Liberal Arts Education Women's studies provides you with all the benefits of a liberal arts degree. Liberal arts education emphasizes critical thinking, which can be applied to a multitude of careers. It demonstrates to a potential employer that you have the confidence, skills, and maturity to earn a college degree; that you are well-rounded, having studied a wide variety of topics rather than one narrow skill area; that you likely are able to think more globally than many other job applicants. Managers often prefer liberal arts majors because they think they are better at organizing material, writing well, and making oral presentations. Moreover, a Women's Studies major equips you with significant additional advantages... B. Additional Employment Skills You Gain With a WS Degree Larissa Semenuk, a Women's Studies graduate, explains: "The major prepares one to do anything any other liberal arts major does but with deeper insight into issues of oppression and celebration of women. Hopefully, this insight carries over into important issues of other groups -- making one more sensitive and therefore more prepared to do all things/jobs with greater attention to ethical standards. A Women's Studies major is taught to look for the hidden -- like looking for the silenced voices of women in history. It's invaluable!" (Luebke and Reilly 19). There are many practical applications for Women's Studies training on the job. For example, as more women work, business and corporations find the need for more sensitivity to women's issues such as sexual harassment, flex-time, parental leave, pay equity, and equal employment opportunities. The development of women's agencies and organizations is spurring demand for graduates with specializations in Women's Studies. There is growing demand in the professions of law, medicine, social work, teaching, counseling, and government service for expertise on gender issues. Similarly, women's studies specialists are increasingly being used as consultants in industry, higher education, insurance companies, and personnel firms. Perhaps most importantly, many Women's Studies graduates say that their education gave them the confidence to pursue careers traditionally held by men. C. Fields of Graduate Study That WS Majors Have Pursued The fields of graduate study that Women's Studies majors have pursued include: Administration, advocacy, anthropology, arts, counseling, education, history, humanities, international studies, law, library science, philosophy, psychology, public health, public policy, social work, and sociology. D. Fields of Employment WS Graduates Have Pursued, With Real Examples of Specific Job Placements Within Each Category A recent national study uncovered more than 38 distinct occupations pursued by Women's Studies graduates (Luebke and Reilly). Resolved Question: What do you think? Obama paid women on his staff only 83 for every dollar he paid the men on his staff?

I found this while browsing on the net. Isn't it interesting? Isn't it too bad that only the Conservatives and Republicans seemed to have the street sense to see through Obamas rhetoric. Now that the rose colored glasses are coming off of many people, it's a little too late. I just thought this was important enough to share. BTW - here's Legistorms link if your interested: http://www.legistorm.com/ McCain is the candidate for Women! While Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign has produced a television ad criticizing Sen. John McCain’s position on equal pay for women and pointing out tha... McCain is the candidate for Women! While Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign has produced a television ad criticizing Sen. John McCain’s position on equal pay for women and pointing out that women in America are paid only 77 cents on the dollar compared to men, Obama pays his own female Senate staffers, on average, only 78 percent of what he pays male staffers. ... McCain, an Arizona Republican, has paid women on his Senate staff a higher average salary than he pays men and Obama has paid men a higher average salary than he pays women. “Now is the time to keep the promise of equal pay for an equal day's work," Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama said August 28 in his convention acceptance speech. He told the crowd in Denver: "I want my daughters to have exactly the same opportunities as your sons." What a lie! Obama's commitment to federally mandated pay equity stretches from the Rockies to Wall Street and beyond. And yet it seems to have eluded his United States Senate office. Compensation figures for his legislative staff reveal that Obama pays women just 83 cents for every dollar his men make. A watchdog group called LegiStorm posts online the salaries for Capitol Hill staffers. "We have no political affiliations and no political purpose except to make the workings of Congress as transparent as possible," its website explains. Parsing LegiStorm's official data, gleaned from the Secretary of the Senate, offers a fascinating glimpse at pay equity in the World's Greatest Deliberative Body. The most recent statistics are for the half-year from October 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008, excluding interns and focusing on full-time personnel. For someone who worked only until, say, last February 29, extrapolating up to six months' service simplifies this analysis. Doubling these half-year figures illustrates how a year's worth of Senate employees' paychecks should look. Based on these calculations, Obama's 28 male staffers divided among themselves total payroll expenditures of $1,523,120. Thus, Obama's average male employee earned $54,397. Obama's 30 female employees split $1,354,580 among themselves, or $45,152, on average. Again, on average, Obama's female staffers earn just 83 cents for every dollar his male staffers make. This figure certainly exceeds the 77-cent threshold that Obama's campaign website condemns. However, 83 cents do not equal $1.00. In spite of this 17-cent gap between Obama's rhetoric and reality, he chose to chide GOP presidential contender John McCain on this issue. Obama responded August 31 to Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's Republican vice-presidential nomination. Palin "seems like a very engaging person," Obama told voters in Toledo, Ohio. "But I've got to say, she's opposed -- like John McCain is -- to equal pay for equal work. That doesn't make much sense to me." Obama's criticism notwithstanding, McCain's payment patterns are the stuff of feminist dreams. McCain's 17 male staffers split $916,914, thus averaging $53,936. His 25 female employees divided $1,396,958 and averaged $55,878. On average, according to these data, women in John McCain's office make $1.04 for every dollar a man makes. In fact, all other things being equal, a typical female staffer could earn 21 cents more per dollar paid to her male counterpart -- while adding $10,726 to her annual income -- by leaving Barack Obama's office and going to work for John McCain. --- And then talks about a reason being that Obama's campaign is like a mens club. Voting Question: USA: Still not racism free, but this time, it's reversed.?

Just wondering if anyone else notices this. Long ago in America, African Americans were kept as slaves and treated absolutely terrible. They were abused and killed for no good reason, and treated as proprerty. Those times are important parts of our American history, and should be studied and taken to heart. But since then, racial justice had taken a dramatic turn. The US president is, indeed, half black. Races can now marry. Everyone can go to school, despite they're ethnic background. But we didn't stop there. Nowadays, the "n" word is banned from the mouths of non-blacks, certain scholarships, schools, and clubs are open only to black people, whereas other races/ethnicities do not generally have that opportunity. (There are, for ex, Hispanic scholarships and whatnot, but not near as many as those for "African Americans".) There are even specialized television channels specifically for black people. White people do not get this priveledge. The fact of the matter is, white people have said they're sorry. Not only that, they've managed to put blacks on a sort of pedestal, and it is my opinion that whites are now being taken advantage of. I have seen more hostility and prejudice from blacks to whites than the other way around. I hate racism. I hate prejudice. Of any kind. But as a white American, I can't help but to feel jipped by society. These days, I can not even voice my opinion without being judged and deemed as a racist. We have skipped right over equality, and guess what? People are still being judged by the color of their skin. Although they are being treated better, it is my opnion that they are being treated too well-- "All men are created equal, but some are more equal than others" is a good quote to describe society today in regards to race. Why are there race-designated schools? Why are there designated channels? The only way to be equal, to bejudged not by the color of your skin but by the content of your character, is to drop labels like "black" and "white" and just look at us for what we are: Human beings. No one is better, no one is worse. No one should be treated as special or given priveledges to speak a goddamn word that other races are not allowed to speak for fear of physical harm. How about no one says that word? How about everyone fight for the chance to go to a college, and have that college take an interest in you because you're smart and talented, not because your pigment is darker than mine? I think America kind of missed the point, and for most of us, our history has taught us nothing... more

Voting Question: Is the reason that believers don't question the Bible because there is really no way TO question it?

I'm just trying to understand the process by which believers blindly accept that the Bible is the truth. When I am taught something, and I *feel* it makes sense, I usually do not question it. If people I respect also feel it makes sense, that reassures me that my beliefs are justified. If the vast majority of people agree with it, that also reassures me, albeit to a lesser extent. This does not mean I never question what I've been taught, but only that I don't immediately feel the need to research the matter, because it's not something my life depends upon. Since I was little, I was taught that to get enough protein in your diet, you had to eat some sort of animal product (beef, poultry, seafood, dairy.) Getting enough protein is something your life depends upon. Did you know, however, that it is virtually impossible to die from protein deficiency in a developed nation. Almost all foods have some amount of protein in them, and the fact is that the number one cause of premature death in America is OVER INGESTION of high protein foods (beef, eggs, dairy.) Even though the beef, poultry and dairy industries do their best to make people believe the opposite (and most people do.) When I am taught something that my life depends upon which does NOT make sense, I will exhaustively research the matter to find out as much as possible, so I can make an INFORMED decision. My research might include personal experimentation, consulting with experts, consulting with people opposed to what I've been taught, reading unbiased opinions, etc, etc. If the issue in question has personal ramifications (e.g. taking a medication), I will be extra diligent. Religion, apparently, deals with the most important and personal aspects of life and death possible, so naturally we would assume that if any aspect of a religion did not make sense, a sane person would be compelled to research the matter themselves. After all, this is life and death you are talking about. Yet it seems that very few people question the validity of the Bible or Christianity, or the claims made by the people who market Christianity. Perhaps part of the problem is that the promoters have really very little information available to back up their claims, so a person is left with two options... believe because that's what you've been taught, what you see other people believe, and what the religious industry markets, or don't believe and EXPERIMENT with a life without religion. From what I see and have experienced, given equal opportunity, there is nothing a believer can do or achieve, or experience in life, that a non-believer cannot do. The Bible makes numerous absolute claims regarding things that can not be corroborated, and the claims DO NOT MAKE SENSE. In any other situation, when an outrageous claim is made, a person will seek out evidence to corroborate the claim, so how can you possibly accept the Bible as being true when it is full of outrageous claims that there is really no way for you to corroborate? How do you know you aren't just playing it safe because the Christian industry has exploited your worst fears? more

Resolved Question: Feminists! How many of you are politically libertarian?

I know Rio is somewhat libertarian, but are there many more out there? I consider individual freedom more important than equality (this is where many feminists disagree with me) because 'equality' itself differs in definition between people. I find that the way 'equality' is enforced can even restrict freedom (for example, there are feminists who promote equal outcome - in the name of equality - at the expense of equal opportunity). So feminists, where do you stand in this regard?Oh and it would also be great if you could explain why you are aren't libertarian if that's the case.@random6x7 - you make an awful lot of conjectures on what I believe. I've had a socialist government for the last 9 years and I can't tell you that they've done a good job of running the country. more

Resolved Question: is this good so far or no?

i am doing a research paper on eleanor roosevelt, we have to answer the following questions in our paper: 1. Why the person is important to the civil rights movement and the important things they did during their life. 2. What the motivating factors were that caused them to be willing to fight for civil rights. 3. How this persons life has effected my life. i know i didnt do the third one yet but if you can help me with it that would be great, any ideas or anything like that, thank you so muchh ! Racial justice wasnt always one of Eleanor roosevelts biggest concerns. She began her social activism working with the immigrant communities of the Rivington Street Settlement House in 1903 and began to recognize racial discrimination only after moving into the White House in 1933. Eleanor Roosevelt witnessed difficult hardships done by the Great Depression as she traveled the nation. Eleanor Roosevelts freind/mentor reports detailed the defect of Federal Emergency Relief Administration programs and brought individual stories of personal hardship to Eleanor's attention. Even though she had visited African Americans when she toured poverty stricken areas after becoming First Lady, she didn't notice the depth pertaining to racism until she pressured the SHA to admit African Americans to Arthurdale. Eleanor Roosevelt approved a civil rights agenda which accepted segregation and supported equal opportunity. Quality education became her top public priority. As she told the Conference on ***** Education, "wherever the standard of education is low, the standard of living is low". Her outreach generated a strong response from African Americans. Aryanism increased her disgust with American racism. In 1939, Eleanor decided to attack the hypocritical way in the way that the nation dealt with racial injustice. She wanted Americans to understand that they were lying when speaking about democracy while ignoring the fact that our country wasn't perfect (because of the widespread treatment of African Americans) and encouraged racism. In an interview with Ralph Bunche she said that Americans only want to talk about the good parts of American life and hide the problems (like racism, etc.) in the closet. She encouraged Americans to recognize that racism caused intense feelings and violence, and wanted all Americans to act out against racism (ridiculous behavior). more

Resolved Question: Working mother=second rate career and second rate children?

Our society is changing, but women are still not equal to men. I am a mother who was at the same level as my husband in college before I had a baby: same number of units and same degree of excellence. After having a baby, I took a short break from school, and he decided to start trying much harder in school. When I went back to school, he would not limit the time he spent on homework to allow me time for homework. He kept telling me that for him homework comes first or else we will live on the streets. Where the hell did he get this mindset? I guess it's still trickling down from the 1950s. Doesn't he think I could support the family just as well as him? Isn't my homework just as important? A-hole. Anyway . . .. I think the kids in the 1950s were often much better off than the kids today. So many kids are in day care at critical times in their lives, and day cares don't do as good of a job taking care of young children as mothers in my experience. They're making kids violent and dumb. And the wives of the 1950s may have been better off, too. At least they could be excellent at their role, even if it wasn't chosen. People today had me convinced that I could be equal to my husband. I imagined that we would both work just as much in raising our baby. I thought we could have a baby and both have an equal opportunity at a career. That's not the way it happened. The laws are almost in place to allow for that to happen. No more firing women for having babies, but it's my husband who has an outdated and unfair approach to labor division at home. He's following his dad's example and avoiding our baby a little and avoiding cleaning, too. When he has homework to do, and so do I, he says that I better call the day care provider (or sitter if we can afford it). I don't do it because our son already at day care too much. He doesn't like it there, and they just watch TV all the time. So over the course of our son's first two years, my husband has wowed all of his professors and become a tutor for his classmates. He has spent a lot of time on his career and not allowed me to. He still thinks he has to be the breadwinner or something. Then there's the rest of society that expects me to graduate college and get a career despite being a woman and a mother. And that's what I wanted all along. Everybody told me I could. With all my husband's scholarly achieving and dare I say neglect of his child, I have had very little time to really excel in school. I hate fighting him on this. I hate trying to convince him to back off on the school a little so he can spend some time with his daughter. It's too hard, and I'm already so unremarkable in school compared to most of the students. I just want to drop out of school and raise my daughter (but not really). Right now I feel like my son is not as smart as he could be, and neither am I because I am trying to do both these things and my husband does not support me in it. He is doing really excellent things in school, and I hate to make him stop, but if I don't graduate this time around (yes, I've been in school a while due to financial difficulties), I'll have a hard time getting a good career. I feel like my husband is taking advantage of me but nobody is noticing. It seems to be the transitional norm: the woman achieves less in career than the man. The man achieves just as much as the 1950s. Children are getting dumber because there's nobody there to help them. Isn't it about time that fathers and mothers have equal opportunities at a career? When is the social norm going to change? And what should I do now? more

Resolved Question: Can someone please edit my essay.?

One of the core ethical principles of social work requires that all people have the right to be treated with respect and dignity, and by doing this, we must ensure that every individuals’ human rights are upheld. Each person has a right to be treated as a whole, which requires the profession to not only be concerned with the individual , but also their family, community, and environment. Social workers must work together to abolish the social conditions that contribute to economic inequalities by challenging unjust policies and practices at every level, mazo level and mricro level. This includes, but is not limited to, making sure that those in need receive resources first, and that the resources are offered are distributed fairly. Poverty is a major concern for social workers because it deprives individuals from having healthy, satisfying, and productive lives. Without the basic necessities, individuals have no opportunity for human development. Social workers are concerned about what it takes to get individuals our of poverty or preferably, to help them from falling into poverty into the first place. However, as advocates of change, justice, and equality, we need to look at the individual, family, community, and environmental circumstances that make individuals susceptible falling into poverty. There circumstances may vary for individuals that are disabled, elderly, unable to work, or women with children. Not having access to resources, education, employment, limited income, and high cost of child care can contribute to an individual have trouble meeting their basic needs. Being able to work and provide for needs ourselves and our families is essential to our well-being. We should not be deprived of these basic needs that can sustain an individual’s life. Most importantly, social workers need to ensure that resources help individual’s overcome their problems and aid them in being responsible individuals to make better choices that in turn will improve the quality of their lives. There needs to be a combination of resources, support, education, and employment opportunities for individuals to develop their lives to the fullest potential. We need to work together strategically for the common good of those individuals in need to help them address their problems and needs, and be responsible to take control of their lives by making the right choices and eventually be productive individuals in their communities. Individuals for instance like women need to be empowered to be given the opportunity to make choices and have access to information and resources that can help them to build a better life and future for their families. It is important that there is equal access to resources such as affordable child care, housing, education, and employment that will aid women in being self-sufficient individuals. Having an education fosters learning opportunities and gain knowledge to have the opportunity to make a difference in their lives. Therefore, education needs to be universal for everyone. Education needs to be affordable and more

Resolved Question: This is something I wrote for a friend re her kids which were taken away?

I wrote this with the intention of giving it to my friends social worker from families SA (child welfare) What do others out there think about this topic/situation? Anyway this is what I wrote..... In early February this year, a good friend of mine is due to give birth to her baby daughter, her third child, a child which is going to be placed into foster care just hours after her birth. Her other two children have already been placed into care as family services drew to a long debated conclusion that the young toddlers were at risk if they stayed with their parents any longer as there had been numerous reports of un-cleanliness and neglect with the children occasionally being left alone in the house while the parents where next door socialising with their neighbour. Now one thing we must all try to understand is that every human being was born into this world vulnerable to what life throws out at us and that not everyone is given the same equal opportunity to truly shine. Some people are just not as well equipped at dealing with normal life circumstances and for that they are punished instead of being helped and educated. The parents of these children themselves where placed into foster care for various reasons of abuse and neglect and as a result their own style of parenting has been compromised. My friends children were in no way in any danger of being physically or emotionally abused so why does it seem reasonable to snatch them from their parents when education and support could have seen them through? This situation almost reminds me of the stolen generations where young aboriginal children were taken forcefully from their families, their lives destroyed from outsiders who thought they knew that what they were doing was right. And then my thoughts turn to their unborn child, nestled inside amongst her mother’s body, biologically programmed to immediately latch onto her mother’s breast and to stay close to her mother’s warmth and loving comfort. Do these people, these social workers, actually realise that they are neglecting the baby’s needs for close physical contact from the one person it needs it most from? Not only does it seem completely ludicrous to take away a baby from its mother who is completely able and willing to take care of it but it just seems plain evil! So there is a history of these parents not keeping their house tidy and making some poor financial decisions, these parents do not do drugs, they do not abuse their children and never have and most importantly, they can give their children the love that only a parent can give. I have been witness to this love every time my friend speaks of her children and also in the gentle way that she handles my own young baby. Everybody needs to be given the opportunity to learn from their past mistakes or misjudgements and yet how is one supposed to learn without the right teaching? As every parent out there knows, babies do not come with instruction manuals and nor does life but us as a community need to be willing to help each other so that families can stay together because ultimately that is the most important thing.i guess I kind of wrote it like an essay so its not really a letter as such more an article kinda thingAnother thing I might add is that these parents are actually intellectualy disabled because of the abuse they had as children/in utero more

Resolved Question: Why was the womens movement of the 1970s so successful?

During this period, across the anglo nations (America, the United Kingdom and Australia), the womens movement achieved several key landmarks which were put into law, more or less, in all these nations. They were: The right to equal pay for equal work. The right to be free from discrimination in the workplace. The right to work in almost any profession or job (a few exceptions persist) Reproductive rights including the right to abortion (some caveats exist) The right to equal education opportunity. There is no dispute that these rights were both protested for and obtained, yet, amongst the feminist movement itself, there is very little introspection about why these rights were granted. There are many assumptions that rights were won because of the "power" of the womens movement, and its scope, but I wonder myself how much weight these arguments actually carry. Are they in fact true, and if they are, then, how much of the truth do they tell? The 1970s was a time of huge political upheaval, from the Vietnam war and the social unrest that went along with it in the early 1970s, which affected the US and Australia deeply. In the UK, the Union movement was agitating for better wages and strikes were a perpetual feature of the political landscape as large nationalised industry floundered in an increasingly global economy. The streets of America and England were filled with rioters marching for peace, social justice, healthcare and the minimum wage. At the same time, and often, with many of the same people involved, the womens rights marches took place, using the same organizational backbone infrastructure as the peace marchers and unionists. Governments rules by consent, which is mostly obtained by conceding freedoms in the face of mass protest and pressure. The freedoms most easily granted tend to be the ones which have little or no effect on the ruling political and economic elites which define the power structures of western civilization. Unlike peace or the minimum wage, or declaring peace, granting rights to women undermines very few of the key pillars of the establishment. Yet it does pacify unrest. Also, any party seen to be a party "friendly" to women creates immense political capital for itself, as long as it can do so without at the same time alienating itself from men. Obviously, I am hinting at a few of the reason I think the womens movement was so successful. I haven't found any books of feminism which examine it from this perspective, mostly they are keen to talk about what protests happened when, and who organized them, and the manner that certain laws came to pass. All of which is important, but little of which looks at the question being asked here. Why was the womens movement of the 1970s so successful? more

Resolved Question: Why would God put people at a disadvantage by allowing them to live in an area without the bible?

God gives us an opportunity to pursue him and gives us that opportunity to learn more about him. If this were his true intentions why would he place people into a disadvantage by allowing them to be born into environments where the word of God is not present and possibly a location where no missionary can locate or bother going to. I believe God is very clear in his instructions to gaining entrance into Heaven (I don't believe the bible has loopholes). If we have such clear instructions why would there be the lack of opportunity for certain people. Does God favor certain people? If he treats us all equally why would he knowingly allow certain people to be born into an environment free of Christianity or any religion for that matter. The lack of education in certain parts of the world (Possibly small tribes) I believe can cause not ALL but maybe a few people from even being able to comprehend or formulate the concept of God. So I guess my two real questions are. "Does God give us all equal opportunities into heaven at birth?" and "Is God truly all knowing?" Because I like to believe that he is aware that such people exist. Now to clarify what I am asking I am referring to people who, let's say live in small tribes. They may be taught that God exists but maybe in the form of a statue which the bible clearly forbids. If so, these people are also at a disadvantage because Jesus is not in their lives and will never be. I do not believe they will be able to formulate such a concept without the bible or assistance from possibly a missionary. I am sure some of you will answer stating that the world does have access to the word of God. But I do not believe this is true. I do not believe that every person on the planet has had the opportunity to make a choice whether or not to believe in Christ, that is impossible, so what about these people? Do you think that God may be asking us to find these people? There are people in this world that have not been given the choice whether or not to accept Jesus. One reason may be that they were born into this world learning one way and that one way never changed. Maybe they were raised Buddhist in some secluded monastery and I truly believe it is possible for that person to go through life unaware of the possibility of a life with Christ. Should he pay for this in hell because he was never given this choice? The reason I have reworded this question is because a majority of answers were stating that every person has this opportunity. I simply don't agree if you think about it you might understand why this is impossible. Can missionaries really cover 6.7 billion people? Impossible (And Yes I am aware that there is a high percentage of Christians out there). There are still millions unaccounted for. Are these people going to hell because no missionary could reach them? What about a Mormon living in a compound where bibles cannot enter (Christian Bible)? I am not sure if this is true but I am using them as an example for the sake of argument. So I guess I ended up throwing a few questions out there but your answer would be greatly appreciated because I have been pondering if such people can be found and what I should do to help. For non-believers I want to make this clear. I am merely attempting to give them an opportunity for hope because whether you believe in Christ or not, God gives hope to people. If the bible was fabricated it gives people something to believe in and hope for when they die. Hope is the backbone of our nation and helps us pursue our dreams. If you believe I am just living in a fantasy please keep it to yourself because I love clinging onto hope and I like to think there is more to my life than the world I live in now. It helps me live a better life and I believe that by spreading the word I am giving people a taste of the same passion that I have. The same way certain movies inspire people to go do something or be something the bible inspires me to be a better person and it helps me to love people which is why I would love to spread it. I am quite sure no atheist can question the strong moral values the bible carries. Such morals can help create a better world. If I met someone unfortunate enough to live in an impoverished country I would be honored to give them the hope that is in Christ and a joyous afterlife in Heaven. I think it is very important for people to give hope to the hopeless. And if you believe the bible is pure fantasy why would you stop unfortunate people from being able to live this fantasy? Do you want them to stay hopeless? Sorry for being wordy and going off point for a moment :) But I have been struggling with this question for quite some time. Thank you all in advance! Sorry this is the size of an article! :( more

Voting Question: can you proofread this paper, it is long and i am giving 3 best answers to the person?

i will give 1 best answer here, and i will tell you two other questions you can just put something random on and i will give best answer for those. here is my paper: WILL ALSO EMAIL IN .doc FORMAT IF YOU WANT. “If you don’t get at least a 25 on the ACT your going to ruin your life, so STUDY!” - it's probably the most common command a typical high school junior or senior hears. Every parent wants their child to do well on the standardized tests required for college admission. Standardized tests should continue to be an important factor determining college admission, and without these standardized tests some people will truly struggle with their lives. These tests help make college admission more fair as it compares us to our peers and also helps balance Grade Point Average (GPA) problem(some courses are easier than others, hence it is easier to obtain a higher GPA in one as opposed to another). The tests also help set pace for college success and can be used by colleges to help predict what a students GPA might be, throwing into account all other factors during college application – such as extracurriculars and GPA. Schools throughout the nation “have different curriculum's and grading scales”. While some schools have GPA on a 4.0 scale, others have it on the 5.0 scale. Students in one school can easily attain a GPA greater than 4.5 by taking “easy” Advanced Placement courses and looking better on college applications. For example, if someone takes AP Statistics as opposed to another student in AP Calculus BC. The person in AP Statistics might easily obtain an A, while the latter might obtain a B. Assuming they are both on the same scales, the student in AP Statistics would have a greater GPA in the subject, and colleges seem to consider all AP courses to be equal. However, if we assume that the student in AP Calculus BC earns a 4.1 GPA as cumulative, and a 34 on the ACT while the student in AP Statistics earns a 4.9 GPA and a 24 ACT score, both the students would probably be considered equals. These tests also help “evaluate school districts”. Student averages can help the federal government evaluate where problems related to schools are in the nation, and there could be mandates to help improve the school systems. People such as myself require the ACT’s and SAT’s to help me get into a good college since I have very little extracurriculars and only my GPA to back me up. A common argument against standardized tests is that they are “racist” and are not properly made, however that is false. Standardized tests are valid and undeviating, they accomplish their job. According to www.2facts.com, the SAT “measures what it tries to measure”. The goal of the tests is to help give colleges information about the students ability in a given subject, at a given level for that subject. For example, mathematics goes from simple Algebra to complex Trigonometry in the ACT. The questions that are considered extreme, too easy or too hard, are removed. This helps the test be fair since there are multiple tests administered on the same day, in the same room. Being a bad test taker is also not a valid excuse to remove tests since tests are obstacles that must be overcome. The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) are examples of two tests in college that must be passed with high marks in order to have a chance to get into their respective schools. High-stake tests are a big part of college, and in order to do well in college tests must become a type of second nature. Research conducted by two students from University of Texas, Thomas Coyle and David Pillow, has shown that these standardized tests help predict student GPA in college. There is overwhelming evidence supporting the fact that the SAT's and ACT's to indeed help students in the long run. The criticism of the ACT and SAT's being unfair is also not an effectual argument. Aristotle once said that “nothing can be perfect”, and that philosophy applies to standardized tests. The problem is not the test itself, it is the student who needs to learn to take advantage of these tests. The tests have the same material over and over again, so studying should not be a problem. The average score on the ACT is 21, which is considered to be “decent” by colleges, and is enough for a person to get into a decent college. The test helps colleges predict how the person did in high school without even looking at transcripts, for example: What if a native English speaker scores a 19 on the English portion of the ACT? Even if they did have an “A” on their grade cards for English, the ACT is effective in “picking out the weeds” to help ensure that those who have a a lower grade in English but have a high ACT score get the same opportunities as those who have a “good grade” in English and a bad score on the ACT. Standardized tests are so effective because they have set standards that compare you to your peers. This more

Resolved Question: Could you please check this for grammatical errors? - part 2?

This is second part. Could you please check this for grammatical errors? Thank you! "National/local laws It is extremely important to recognize that each business has a number of legal obligations. For example there is a number of insurances. Some of these insurances are compulsory for businesses like for example motor insurance if you run a company vehicle, while other insurance are optional like building insurance or keyman insurance. To run my business I will need the employer's liability insurance which is required of all employers. It will generally protect me against the costs of compensating employee who is injured in the work place. Legal responsibilities Careful attention needs to be paid to businesses’ staff and their rights. There are many laws affecting health and safety at work, paying and equal opportunities. Health and safety Stringent rules are set out to ensure that businesses do all they can to protect their workers. The main legislation in Britain is the Health and safety at Work Act. This set out the minimum standards which employers must maintain the working environment and workplace. This include: • Businesses must provide all necessary safety equipment and clothing • Making sue that workers have regularly brakes to test • Employers must provide a safety working environment • All businesses must have a written safety policy on display • All businesses must keep temperatures comfortable To prevent accidents in the work place and protect the work environment I must make sure that my own business meets all legal issues specially health and safety at work regulations and food hygiene legislation. I also need to provide adequate washroom and toilet facilities and create a hygienic and safety environment to work in. Voting Question: I translated this text, could you check it,I'm not native?

And he finds the literal synonym for the specific word and in case of having enough information about target language finds a suitable equivalent. In more advancement level makes an equivalent. Knowledge about the etymology of words is important not only as a help for understanding them, but also in finding and making equivalents (for technical and specialized idioms). For instance, if we look adenotomy up in English to English dictionary, we will find that this word is a combination of adeno with Greek etymology that means tumor (knot or wen) and –tom suffix with Greek etymology that means cleave (separate) and –y suffix that is a noun making suffix. The literal meaning of this word that is "to cleave tumor" will be found by simply adding these components. And now it has made it easy for finding equivalents such as "cleaving tumor" or "separating tumor". But this point has been mentioned only as the advantages of monolingual dictionaries; other wise, making equivalent is such a delicate, vigilant and watchful job that needs skill (craft), domination, having experience and great technical knowledge. The beginner translator should avoid making equivalent. And he should mostly try to find common and available equivalents and equals. This subject (issue) makes us discuss translating scientific and specialized texts and using specialized dictionaries which needs other opportunities. One of scientific rules that can be mentioned in the field of translating scientific and specialized texts is that words have particular meanings in gamut of every science and specific technique. So it's necessary to refer to dictionary and idiomatical dictionary of that branch more and more.  more

Resolved Question: What's so wrong with being 'liberal'?

I'm asking because I really want to know why Republicans sometimes throw it out there like it's an insult, I don't see any problem with it at all. -Liberalism is a broad class of political philosophies that consider individual liberty to be the most important political goal.[1] Liberalism emphasizes individual rights and equality of opportunity. Within liberalism there are various streams of thought which compete over the use of the term "liberal" and may propose very different policies, but they are generally united by their support for a number of principles, including freedom of thought and speech, limitations on the power of governments, the rule of law, an individual's right to private property,[2] free markets,[2] and a transparent system of government.[3] All liberals, as well as some adherents of other political ideologies, support some variant of the form of government known as liberal democracy, with open and fair elections, where all citizens have equal rights by law.[4] Modern liberalism has its roots in the Age of Enlightenment and rejected many foundational assumptions that dominated most earlier theories of government, such as the Divine Right of Kings, hereditary status, established religion, and economic protectionism. Whereas Conservative doesn't really sound all that appealing to me, but I don't call them 'conservatards' or anything else derogatory (libtard seems to be a popular one among some): -Conservatism is a political term with different definitions. In general, conservatives support gradual change. Scholar R.J. White once put it this way: "To put conservatism in a bottle with a label is like trying to liquify the atmosphere … The difficulty arises from the nature of the thing. For conservatism is less a political doctrine than a habit of mind, a mode of feeling, a way of living."[1] Ronald Reagan often is quoted as saying: "I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism."[2] Russell Kirk considered conservatism "the negation of ideology". Now, before everyone throws out mean comments, I'm really asking, what, from the above, do you find so offensive? I really want to know, I'm asking with all due respect, and I in no way assume that ALL Republicans are any 'certain way'. Sources: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberalism http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conservative I know 'wiki' isn't the most 'fabulous' source, I was just looking for a quick definition of both liberalism and conservative Thanks so far for the thoughtful answers and to the user who suggested I'm a college student, I'm not currently, but I am college educated. more

Resolved Question: Could someone tell me why the Election of Barack Obama is a "landmark" occurrence?

As though no one could figure out ones political standing by the use of the word "landmark" alone. What is so important, earth shattering? What if he is black (he isn't but most think he is). So what if he was. If you are truly not racist then this should be next to meaningless. Skin color should not even be registered in your thought process, because it truly is irrelevant. It has no effect on your judgment, character, or integrity. So tell me why is this election in any way shape or form landmark. His race should be but a footnote in history if people were not racist. From what I see on the news, people view this as the culmination of decades of struggle and hardship and what Martin Luther King Jr. was really dreaming about. But it isn't... not that way. His was a dream of equality and if it is truly equal as I know it then Obama's race (whatever that may be) and his ensuing election isn't a beacon of hope for all suffering from oppession but rather a representation of the lack there of. So tell me true, what is landmark about the election of another president of the United States. It's been done before and will be again, and this particular president has not had the opportunity to show he is any more special than the next.I wasn't implying that there was no longer racism. I know that there is but the point was that all of the KKK and rants of those types of people are as ineffectual as they are ignorant. As to the answers regarding "landmark" perhaps I wasn't clear in my statement. I guess being that he is black makes it a "first" and therefore "landmark" worthy that wasn't what I was talking about. I guess the real question would be is there anything about Obama that is "landmark" worthy other than just being black. more

Resolved Question: ¿A question for young expats in the Philippines: How do you deal with Filipinos ?

""""In the Philippines a foreigner is never assimilated into the society.”They are so close to their families" meaning you will always be a total stranger. People have many reasons to consider what happiness might be. For an old retired person probably it sounds great because if you get used to the idea of becoming a waking ATM and use that to you own benefit then it might work for people who have no other choices. For me (a 20 years old person, extremely attractive and with lots of opportunities in a normal country) it is extremely depressing and frustrating to be a total stranger and surrounded by people who think I am rich and will be at all times planning and setting up how to get my money. At the end of the story (with just a couple of exceptions) you'll realize that nobody is really interested in your friendship as such. They are just thinking of them and their families; and other Filipinos are their preferred choice of friends. That's basically what you will get in the Philippines but if you get used to that way of living and learn to accept it and deal with it then you'll probably be happy in the Philippines. What is important for me is to be treated as a normal person, have a lot of good friends and be surrounded by nice people not hungry for my money.”””” This is not my isolate opinion or an isolate incident it’s the live experience of many other foreigners who live or have lived in the Philippines for several years (in my case 3 long years of immense loneliness and total frustration). Don't think that I have not tried to adjust, in fact I have developed all sorts of strategies and techniques to adjust and get along with Filipinos, I have tried everything, I have treated them well, I have observed all their customs and respected their social norms, but they are the ones who don't allow any adjustment beyond their close minded culture. A culture where a foreigner is a very rich, very superior, very beautiful person whose feelings or needs doesn't have to be minded only their money (their money for Filipinos and their families). Their culture is reduced to egoism and indifference. I just talked to a friend of mine (same nationality as me) who has been in the PI for 11 years and he totally agreed. He just said: “No matter how hard you try or how many years you spend in this country they'll never accept you as someone equal. For them you’ll always be a tourist”. Just to clarify: I don't hate Filipinos or the Philippines. I probably appreciate Filipinos and the Philippines more than they themselves do. I appreciate a lot more things than Filipinos themselves. This debate is not about the beauty of the Philippines or the charm of its culture, not even about Filipinos as such: It is about their WRONG attitude toward foreigners and how expats or long term residents (or simply immigrants ) can feel about it and learn to deal with that.  more

Resolved Question: If the democrats really do fix the economy then how can the republicans "ruin" the economy so easily?

This is meant for an actual discussion, so please be as objective as possible. This isn't meant to be offensive, I am just very curious and want to learn. And I am sorry if the tone of my writing does offend you. These are just my own observations. I tend to have an idealist set of mind so I might sound ignorant to you. My feelings is that the democrats artificially increase employment throught the creation of civil servant jobs. When the republicans get into office they no longer support these resulting in an increase in unemployment. The republicans therefore want to support the idea of the American economy being based on small businesses and yes even big businesses relying on the idea that people will try to be innovative. The democrats seem to support the idea that the government is meant to ensure that everyone has income (not equal opportunities, income) by any means possible. This relies on government support through welfare and civil servant jobs resulting in a bigger government. I think the government is to big. The best example I can think of is the creation of the car. The creation of the car made carriages obsolete (not considering Amish and related groups). It seems to me that the modern day government would have increased the funding in order to prevent these businesses to fail. Good example of this is airlines, we have to keep bailing them out. Yes I understand that lots of people will lose their jobs and that is a very bad thing, but I can't help but wonder what would happen if these businesses failed allowing others to replace them? Or even take the money that they would use to support a failing business and invest it in a business (like a smaller airline) to help it expand? The jobs at those airlines could be transferred to this other company and they could by the other business's planes or better yet build newer planes creating jobs from janitors to mechanics to engineers to managers (which are all equally as important to me). I told you I was an Idealist. Anyways please discuss this, or if you don't want to discuss give your opinion.Oh i forgot to make my point. Maybe the democrats are only doing short term solutions, while the republicans are searching for long term solutions.I agree Ed I think that money should go toward helping/ giving tax breaks to small business owners.I am sorry I don't understand how supporting small businesses instead of creating civil servant jobs devalues the US dollar. more
