Who Wrote The Equal Rights Amendment Questions asked
Resolved Question: Why do anti-feminists want special rights for women?
Just reading about Phylis Schlafly's campaign against the Equal Rights Ammendment, and some quotes are very revealing....
"Phyllis Schlafly had decided that the E.R.A. was a bad idea... American women, she wrote ...were blessed to live in a country where Christian traditions of chivalry still held... and where free enterprise was continually improving life for the weaker sex... Why, Schlafly demanded, should women “lower” themselves to equal rights “when we already have the status of special privilege?”
"She launched her crusade, STOP ERA, in the fall of 1972, and by the following spring the amendment had won thirty of the necessary thirty-eight state ratifications. Still, Schlafly was confident. “I knew from the start that I had found enough seriously wrong with E.R.A. to stop it, or at least stall it, for an awfully long time,” she would later say.
STOP ERA—the acronym stood for Stop Taking Our Privileges."
So do modern anti-feminists agree with these views? And if so, why do they accuse feminists of wanting special rights, when this is what anti-feminism campaigns for? :-)
http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2005/11/07/051107crbo_books?currentPage=allgreen6es - you're right - "Feminist groups had fought off efforts to add a provision to the amendment that would have exempted women from the draft." Is it because anti-fems know nothing about the history of their own movement that they attempt to place the blame for this on feminism? I think it must be :-)Huh - Schlafly is a notorious anti-feminist - "As of 2008 the most successful antifeminist organization in the US is STOP ERA, founded by Phyllis Schlafly in October 1972."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antifeminismkeypoint - her campaign was against equal rights on the basis that the law would remove these special privileges - therefore it is incorrect to say she did not want special rights for women :-)

moreResolved Question: Help with my persuasive essay?
Alright, well my persuasive essay draft was due today and I have written mine, but something is telling me that it sucks lol, if you could please have a look at it and provide me some feedback that would be great.
Here it is:
In California, everyone can marry, even if it is to the same gender, but some people want to change that. Same sex marriage has a long history, and has almost always been looked down upon. Proposition 8 proposes that all marriage in California should be made illegal unless it is to the opposite sex. This is a very selfish proposal and should not be allowed to pass.
Some people disagree and believe that they deserve more rights than minorities, and that same sex marriage is going to ruin their marriage. They believe that proposition 8 is going to “save” marriage. This makes no sense. This is just discriminating against the minority. Why should we treat same sex couples as if they were second class citizens and don’t deserve as many rights as the rest of us? What if you were the minority and people didn’t want you to get married just because they are used to it their way? How would you feel about that? It should not matter what they think it will do to marriage, because it isn’t anyone else’s business besides your own who you marry. Also, you can still be married to the opposite sex. There is no clear reason as to how proposition 8 is going to protect marriage.
Another reason why proposition 8 makes no sense is that our country was built under the idea that everyone should have equal rights despite all of our differences. What is different about same sex couples? They are not inferior to anyone and should have the same rights to marriage as everyone else. In the declaration of independence it says that everyone is entitled to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness…” ()
Some people also believe that same sex marriage is a “sin” because of the religion they believe in. This is unacceptable. People should not try to incorporate their religion into the law. Just because you believe this doesn’t mean other people do. Your beliefs should not govern other people. Your religion should be kept to yourself, and you shouldn’t try to force it on other people. In the constitution, the first amendment says “Congress shall make no law respecting as establishment of religion….”
A supporter of Proposition 8 might say that allowing same sex marriage would be pointless because same sex couples can still be together and that the only reason to marry would be for the financial bonus. They might argue that this financial bonus should be used to care for children. However, this still doesn’t make sense; Same sex couples can still have children even if they aren’t their biological parents. According to The Boston Globe, around forty percent of same sex couples ages twenty two to fifty five are raising children. (.)
Proposition 8 can not be allowed to pass. Everyone should have equal rights to marry whoever they wish. It is no one else’s business who you marry, and someone’s personal beliefs should not deny you this right. Same sex marriage does not do any harm to opposite sex marriage and everyone is entitled to the pursuit of happiness.
moreResolved Question: i need history whizzes....................................................?
After the Civil War/War Between the States, women not only continued to lead the fight for improving all kinds of living conditions, but the took an increasing interest in public affairs. They proved themselves capable leader of the movements they supported. Clara Barton, who had helped the sick and wounded in the Civil War/War Between the States, founded the American Red Cross in 1881. She was for many years its able and energetic leader. Women like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were leaders of the National Woman's Suffrage Association. They overcame ridicule and strong opposition in their efforts to win equal rights for women.
The growth of industry also helped to change the old beliefs about women's rights. As factories and businesses multiplied, more and more opportunities outside the home were opened to women. The wages women received in these jobs gave them more freedom. New industries also turned on laborsaving aids to help women in their homes -such aids as gas and electric stoves, vacuum cleaners, electric refrigerators, and washing machines. Housework became easier, and women had more time for interests outside their homes.
Many colleges, formerly limited to men, now accepted women students. A number of women's colleges were founded. Because the opportunities for college education were greater, women were able to enter the different professions.
Women Win Suffrage
Changes such as those we have mentioned made it seem less and less sensible to deny women the right to vote. By 1900, four states west of the Mississippi River had approved woman suffrage (they had granted women the right to vote). Leaders in the battle for women's rights had to fight long and hard to bring suffrage to all American women. These leaders wrote newspaper articles and gave lectures. They even paraded before the White House to awaken the public to the need for this reform. At length, the Nineteenth Amendment (1920) was added to the Constitution, extending the right of suffrage to women. Women in all parts of the country voted in the election of 1920. Since that time they have taken more and more interest in government. Women today not only vote, but hold many offices in our national, state, and local governments.
{The periodical, ]"The Woman Rebel", told the working woman that there is no freedom for her until she has this knowledge which will enable her to say if she will become a mother or not. The fewer children she had to cook, wash and toil for, the more leisure she would have to read, think and develop. That freedom demands leisure, and her first freedom must be in her right of herself over her own body; the right to say what she will do with it in marriage and out of it; the right to become a mother, or not, as she desires and sees fit to do; that all these rights swing around the pivot of the means to prevent conception, and every woman had the right to have this knowledge if she wished it…
I resolved, after a visit to France, where children are loved and wanted and cared for and educated, to devote my time and effort in giving this information to women who applied for it. I resolved to defy the law, not behind a barricade of law books and technicalities, but by giving the information to the workers directly in factory and workshop...
(Source: Margaret Sanger, "Comstockery in America," International Socialist Review)
The Industrial Revolution was dawning in the United States. At Lowell, Massachusetts, the construction of a big cotton mill began in 1821. It was the first of several that would be built there in the next 10 years. The machinery to spin and weave cotton into cloth would be driven by water power. All that the factory owners needed was a dependable supply of labor to tend the machines.
As most jobs in cotton factories required neither great strength nor special skills, the owners thought women could do the work as well as or better than men. In addition, they were more compliant. The New England region was home to many young, single farm girls who might be recruited. But would stern New England farmers allow their daughters to work in factories? The great majority of them would not. They believed that sooner or later factory workers would be exploited and would sink into hopeless poverty. Economic "laws" would force them to work harder and harder for less and less pay.
The Lowell Experiment
How, then, were the factory owners able to recruit farm girls as laborers? They did it by building decent houses in which the girls could live. These houses were supervised by older women who made sure that the girls lived by strict moral standards. The girls were encouraged to go to church, to read, to write and to attend lectures. They saved part of their earnings to help their families at home or to use when they got married.
The young factory workers did not earn high wages; the average pay was about $3.50 a week. But in those times, a half-dozen eggs cost five cent

moreVoting Question: Can someone please help me with my essay on conservatism vs liberalism?
So after I wrote my intro and a little history on the the two ideologies, I need to write a paragraph about how liberalism and conservatism connect to the Republican and Democratic parties. I also have to write about the definitions of the two ideologies, and their beliefs on issues such as abortion etc....now for my question, can anyone please help me how I should arrange this? I wrote it out, but the paragraphs would be too long if I put it together and its confusing for me to organize it.
My second question, how exactly does liberalism and conservatism connect to the Republican and Democratic parties? help please!!! I would really appreciate it...here are my paragraphs in the essay so far:
Liberalism emphasizes individual rights and equality of opportunity, relative to any constraints imposed by the states. Different forms of liberalism may propose very different policies, but they are generally united by their support for a liberal democracy, where all citizens have equal rights by law. There are two major streams of thought which compete over the use of the term liberal, which are classical liberalism and social liberalism. Classical liberals place the highest value on individual freedom and believe the role of government should be limited. They see state intervention in the economy as a restriction on the economic freedom of individuals. Social liberals want the government to play an active role in promoting the freedom of citizens. They favor the right to healthcare, an education and a minimum wage. Some also favor laws against pollution, provision of welfare, and discrimination in housing and employment. The Democratic Party is home to an ideologically diverse base, with liberals forming the largest and most influential demographic within the party. Conservatism is a belief in the virtue of preserving traditional values, where tradition refers to various religious, cultural, or nationally defined beliefs and customs. The Republican Party supports a conservative ideology with further establishment in social conservatism and supply-side fiscal policies, which argues that economic growth, can be most effectively created by adjusting the income tax and capital gains tax rates.
Democrats and Republicans have opposing opinions on many different issues such as abortion, taxes, affirmative action, and the environment. When dealing with the issue of abortion, Democrats believe it is the advocate’s choice. Republicans support a human life amendment to the constitution that would outlaw abortion, without exceptions. moreResolved Question: Is same sex marriage covered under the 14th amendment?
I'm writing a paper (well re-writing) for my LGBTQ politics course and I'm defending same sex marriage. One of my arguments was that not allowing it violates the constitution. Obviously, I didn't get this point right. As I'm rewriting it, I'm changing that argument to "to violate equal protection law under the 14th amendment". It seems there's a grey area here, but is this correct? Sodomy laws were turned over because of this. Is it more or less safe to assume that the 14th amendment does in fact violate equal protection for all? And furthermore, Is there anything in the constitution or amendments that clearly states that homosexuality is not included in the beliefs behind "liberty, and justice for all", "equal protection under the law", America is found on "equality" etc.?I could really use some clarification...clearly I'm not a history, or politics major.
moreResolved Question: How would your state's Supreme Court decide the gay marriage issue?
I respect your moral opinion, but that's not what I'm asking here. I am asking for a legal opinion, not a political opinion, but political answers are ok if that would be the basis for your supreme court to rule. Here's the situation in my state: The marriage license statute was written in 1907 and says "any couple". It does not mention gender. My state is an equal rights amendment state. Our judges/justices are appointed by merit, not elected so we do not know their political party. Finally, our Human Rights Act prohibits discrimination based on gender identify or sexual preference. Therefore, I think my Supreme Court would rule gay marriage legal. How about yours?Old Marine-I know you're right. Your state's supreme court already did!Thank you Barry. That's very kind of you. I sent the e-mail.Sandy-interesting response, thanks. Our state applies the law of contracts in dividing property owned by a gay couple. We've permitted gay adoption and even have a reported Lesbian case where the non-biolgical mother was given custody because it was found to be in the best interests of the children.
moreResolved Question: Is it a violation of the equal protection clause for states to not recognize same sex marriage?
I am writing a paper for political science. I am trying to support why it is a violation of the EPC for states to not recognize same sex marriage. I am looking for documents and/or interpretations of documents to support this. So far I am looking at the 14th and 9th amendments, protected rights, and civil rights, and the Declaration of Independence to try and support this. Any help would be great. I don't need specific court cases just documents, or interpretations to help support my case. Thanks.
moreResolved Question: will someone read this and tell me if it is good and if not what i can do to fix it?
this is my dbq 4 am history the question asked was agree or disagree; african americans have gained political, economic and social equality
The Civil Rights movement was successful in getting African Americans political, economic, and social equality. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcom X, and the Black Panthers were some of the leaders in the movement. In the beginning of the movement African Americans believed in non-violent protesting but near the end the protesting became violent. Before the movement there were laws of equality but no one followed them. After the movement the government enforced those equality laws way more.
The Civil Rights Movement began when an African American woman named Rosa parks refused to move from her seat on the bus and was arrested. The specific protest that she started was the Montgomery bus boycott. African Americans were upset that Rosa parks had been arrested and they all decided to not ride the busses and walk or get rides from employers. At first it was hard for blacks to do this because they would get beaten and arrested but the government was loosing a lot of money and they decided to give the blacks freedom to sit were they wanted to on busses. This law was not followed as well as hopped. When people realized that the segregation on busses was still happening in 1961 they gathered a large group of blacks and whites. These people got several busses and had the whites sit in the back and blacks in the front. They rode the busses all over and were beaten along the way. At one point some of the busses were burned (C).After these protests African Americans finally got their freedom on busses.
In 1963 James Meredith was admitted into the University of Mississippi. He felt that even though the university had admitted him that it was still not segregated an that he was alone (J). But the Board of Education felt that they had desegregated their school and was following the laws. In an earlier case that was Brown vs. Board of education they fought for desegregated schools. In the fourteenth amendment it states that facilities can be "separate but equal." They fought that separate schools was not equal (G). Brown had won this case and the schools were to be desegregated. The northern states were starting to desegregate. The desegregation of schools helped African Americans get better paying jobs because they started to get higher education. The income of most African American families had increased (E). When the African American families started to get higher income they started to move into housing in better conditions then in the homes they were forced to live in.
Martin Luther King Jr. was a main leader in the movement he fought non-violently. In the march on Washington he gave his famous "I have a dream....." speech. Not long after this he was arrested and continued to fight from jail and wrote a letter (H). When the non-violent protests were not working as well as hoped African Americans started to go for violent protesting. Malcom X and the black panthers were main voices of violent protesting. The Black panthers had written a platform to state what they wanted. They wanted freedom and power to do what they want with their lives, full employment, better education opportunities, better housing, exemption from military, end to all violence toward them, and freedom to the blacks in jail. African Americans also wanted the right to vote. In 1960 Tennessee was the only state that had over 50 percent of blacks voting (B). With all the fighting and protesting done by 1966 at least three more state had over 50 percent of blacks voting(B)>
In all the Civil Rights movement gained African Americans social political and economic equality. Today it is not completely equal but it is way more equal then it has been in the pat. Thanks to Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcom X, The Black Panthers and all the people who fought for the rights of African Americans. The African American people living today can go to school, work, and public places with all kinds of races.

moreResolved Question: Who else agrees that all references to God should be removed from our Pledge, Money, and Motto?
I believe in the Constitution and the intent of our Founding Fathers to preserve this great nation for all people. The following is a brief history and argument for removing the words “under God” from our pledge and “In God We Trust” from our money and as a national motto. This is not an affront to God. I feel in no way that my God shall feel I am doing anything harmful to him. In preserving this great nation for all who inhabit it, regardless of religion or creed or lack of either, I feel, rather, I am preserving a land where he and any other God of any other religion may be worshipped in peace. The State of the Union is everyone’s concern where as the state of your religion should be a private matter and should be reserved as such. So, read below and tell me how you feel.
Francis Bellamy (1855 - 1931), a Baptist minister, wrote the original Pledge in August 1892. The Pledge was published in the September 8th issue of The Youth's Companion.
His original Pledge read as follows: 'I pledge allegiance to my Flag and (to*) the Republic, for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
[* 'to' added in October, 1892.]
In 1954, Congress after a campaign by the Knights of Columbus, added the words, 'under God,' to the Pledge. President Eisenhower then signed this into law. The Pledge was now both a patriotic oath and a public prayer. The term “God” is strictly Judeo-Christian, and He is found in no other religion but Judeo-Christian. Therefore, what Congress and the President did back in 1954 was in violation of the “Constitution.” Found in the First Amendment is this passage: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.”
The Declaration of Independence, for instance, says the following: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.” This was Thomas Jefferson’s way of dealing with the issue of religion—to keep the political document religion-neutral by using “Creator” instead of “God.” Remember it’s, “We the People”, not We the Christians, We the Muslims, We the Buddhist or We the Hindus, We the Deist or even We the Atheists. We the people mean everyone!
“In God We Trust” has been on America’s money since 1864, when it was first added to the two-cent coin during the Civil War. Congress mandated in 1955 that it appear on all coins and currency and made “In God We Trust” our national motto in 1956. Again, found in the First Amendment is this passage: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.”
By Thomas Jefferson’s own words, “I am for freedom of religion and against all maneuvers to bring about a legal ascendancy of one sect over another.”
“Where the preamble [of the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom] declares, that coercion is a departure from the plan of the holy author of our religion, an amendment was proposed by inserting the words "Jesus Christ," so that it should read, "A departure from the plan of Jesus Christ, the holy author of our religion;" the insertion was rejected by a great majority, in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mohammedan, the Hindoo and Infidel of every denomination.”

Good sense of humor. You got me laughing. As an after thought to the Christians, you should realize that the door is now open to other religions gaining the majority and injecting their Deity into our Pledge, money, and motto. The tools to prevent this were given to you by our Founding Fathers, by favoring no religion, yet you choose to ignore it and by doing so, by your pride, you will lay low what you hold so high."In every country and every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own. It is easier to acquire wealth and power by this combination than by deserving them, and to effect this, they have perverted the purest religion ever preached to man into mystery and jargon, unintelligible to all mankind, and therefore the safer for their purposes." Thomas Jefferson
"History I believe furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people maintaining a free civil government. This marks the lowest grade of ignorance, of which their political as well as religious leaders will always avail themselves for their own purpose." Thomas Jefferson

1.We can recognize that athletes that participate in sports must be given special consideration within our grading system, or we can let the university sink into athletic oblivion.
2.I don't know what colleges are teaching these days! I have just received a letter of application from a young man who graduated from the state university last June. It was a wretched letter--badly written, with elementary errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar. The state university does not deserve the tax support that it is getting.
3.All right-thinking people will support the Board of Education's decision to destroy novels in the school libraries that are offensive to the moral standards of the community. If there were an epidemic of typhoid, the health authorities would be expected to do everything in their power to wipe it out. Pornography is worse than typhoid, since it corrupts the minds and morals of the young, not just their bodies. The school board is to be applauded for their prompt action in wiping out this moral disease.
4.Despite endless efforts, no one has been able to prove that God exists; we may just as well stop trying and accept the truth: there is no God.
5.Alicia started gaining more weight than ever when she started taking Slimdown; the stuff must be fattening!
6.No sensible person would support the Equal Rights Amendment. If it were to pass, we would have women in combat and unisex bathrooms. Eventually, we would not even be able to tell the women from the men!
7.How can Clinton be leading this country! He's a draft-dodging, pot-smoking, womanizer!!
8.Michael Jordan wore that brand, so those must to be the best basketball shoes.
9.The difference in the outcome was Jefferson's missed field goal. If he had put it through, we'd be going to the Super Bowl.

11.So what if I didn't claim all of the money I earned on my taxes? Lots of people underreport their income.

Critics of desegregation, however, accused the Supreme Court of broadening its powers and writing new law. The Supreme Court had established the precedent of "separate but equal" decades earlier, opponents pointed out, and there were no strong grounds to overturn that precedent. Opponents also noted that the 10th Amendment to the Constitution provided states with rights not relegated to the federal government; education fell within the realm of rights reserved for the states, they argued. In forcing states to desegregate against their wishes, critics said, the Brown ruling violated states' rights.
