Open Question: How do I handle an overly- assertive housemate?

I am in my mid-twenties and moved out of my parents' house about a month ago. I'm living with a girl I've known from college for several years. We aren't close friends, but we know each other better than the average acquaintance. We really haven't had time to adjust to one another b/c the whole past month she's been working another job in another city (this only happens during the summer). When moving in, I made her aware of all of the furniture I was bringing. (She had lived in an apartment before, so the majority of the house has been furnished by her.) I have a bookcase/hutch piece that would normally go in my bedroom, but since my bedroom is too small, I have placed it at another spot in the house in the hallway. It doesn't fit perfectly, but it doesn't interrupt with any of her furniture, nor with the flow of traffic in the house. I told her ahead of time where I was planning on putting it, and she was neutral. However, when she came home yesterday, she told me she wanted me to move it because it didn't fit perfectly and that it bothers her being there. She is very assertive, but I felt she was almost being borderline aggressive. I am also assertive, but tend to get flustered when someone acts like this. So, here is my query: 1.) To be "fair", I told her I'd listen to her suggestions on where else this piece should go, but in the end, I don't want to move my piece. I know we have to have compromise, but I don't go around asking her to move her furniture if it bothers me. It's a very heavy, old piece of furniture that has a lot of fragiles displayed and if moved anywhere else, I'm afraid it will get bumped with the house traffic. (Our house is very small and there aren't a lot of options of places for it to go. Also, it is painted a different color and if it's put in a room with a lot of different furniture, it starts to look like a hodge-podge of furniture where nothing matches.) Also, since it's not furniture she is using, I really don't see how it affects her. I'm not sure if I'm being petty here, but I feel like I need to put my foot down. It feels ridiculous to react this way, but she is getting pushy. Is this an appropriate response from me? What else could I do? Is it appropriate for her to make this call? 2.) How does one handle a person who is borderline aggressive? (It almost feels like a power struggle....) Last tidbit of info: we are both paying equal rent to live here. Thank you for your wisdom! more

Voting Question: Can a boyfriend who cheated once ever get his girlfriends Love back?

I have been a relationship for the past 5 1/2 years with my girlfriend and we are both still virgins. We have been together sense high school and we knew it would be hard being in a long distance relationship through college but we decided to stay together. I fell to temptation with a girl i didn't even like remotely. It was my own weakness for myself and my situation that gave way to me doing what i did. I didn't have sex with the other girl because that thought wouldn't even come into my mind giving myself to another girl. I am in love with my girlfriend she will be my first not some girl i don't care about but the pay off with the other girl was equal to that and thats cheating. I felt horrible right after the initial act and my conscience went to work. I was a man with pride who would never even think of cheating but when that happened I found the ultimate weakness in myself. At first I didn't say anything for about a year and a half but she got the truth out of me. We broke up and decided to get back together a week later. I thought wow she really loves me and I haven't waivered sense but its her last year at school and shes graduating and one of her friends out there asked her to leave me and be with him. Now just so the readers know her was to come back to do grad school here in the same state as me and thats still her plan and we are still together but when i asked her what was up she said that she really didn't know if she could love me again as much as she did and to make matters worse shes kind of brutally honest so when she told me that her friend wanted to be with her I felt extremely angry naturally but I had a feeling that something was wrong. She said that she wasn't sure about us anymore and she asked all of her friends advice on what to do. All of her friends except for one told her to go with this new guy and it hurts so much more knowing that my position as her boyfriend was tittering on her decision. Of course i feel into a depression and cried many many times waiting for her answer and she told me she wanted to give me another shot. I was excited but then she told me that she had to spend the summer at school finishing up 2 classes. It pains me to know that the guy is still trying even if its only in my head and shes hanging out with her friends alot more than she used to. I know I must trust my girlfriend and that she'll come back to me but the pain grows everyday. Im 22 and I want to know if i can ever get her love back. We are still together but she wont be back until august and I'm scared. I know I deserve everything thats coming to me but still I pray she chooses me. more

Resolved Question: Make a move to USA for a better life?

At this time, I would need to bore you with a question about value of life and I do need real information from u all friends about USA because only u are the trustable source to search true information. Living in my country, I’ve just always felt under pressure and can’t find myself. 1-Women here are inferior to men. 2-People are jealous, closed mind, and discrimination, especially on women—women to women, men criticize women, but this never happen on men. Example, 2 friends—male and female, they are just friends no more than this-- walk together home from school. The girl will be negatively stereotyped as an easy, odd, not casual and not good to look by the eyes of neighbors. Why people here love to prejudge other people’s way of doing? Why people here love to act as they are the ones having duty to judge someone is good or bad? Why do they judge by just a part of seeing rather than use their brain to think deeply? They love to be involved in negative judgment, but keep mouse silence for advantage of someone. That’s why, women here are passive. Women here are always afraid of being negatively prejudged by neighbors for what she does. So women here do things that neighbor would value rather than do by her personality. It seems women here are just like artists who need to perform well for the eyes of audiences. She is not her. 3-The older have power on the younger. Example, in class, students respect their teacher out of duty. They respect their teacher as second parents. When teacher says something is right or wrong, they obey and follow. Students are afraid to ask or ask many questions unless the teacher asks students to ask questions. Another example about between relatives. A nice or nephew can’t protest his or her aunt or uncle—by tradition—in an equivalent manner. The younger complain only in a lower manner, manner of respecting. If the nice or nephew complain by equivalent manner, it means that the child is unrespectful to the older= cruel= uneducated by parents= too low social class family race. So in real situation here, sometimes, youngers are pressured to get fault because the older can not loose face by recognizing their—older—fault. It is hard for younger to complain with the older because we have a system of respectful to the older. But I think it is unreasonable and communist. I must have equal right to complain with the older. 4-The law here is untrustable. For example about the beauty shop. After a period of treatment to beauty skin of customers, the result becomes worse. In this situation the customer becomes a victim with no response from the shop and the law can’t go to. When someone have a cool and go to by medicine, the medicine seller doen’t guide how many days the patient should need to have medicine but instead the seller asks the patient, “How many day u want to have medicine?” In hospital, doctors don’t care about their schedule to care patients but instead the doctors expect the patients’ relatives to remember what are the treatment that the patient have been provided. 5-Women here are well protected in order not to make mistakes. The statement sounds like women are so luck here but if u look deeply at it, u will see that it makes women become passive, are limited and closed her brain and freedom from all of her action in the society. Why? Why by tradition women are afraid of having mistakes while men can experience freely in the society? Is there any one can walk without passing many fall down? If women are kept to stay in one place because of afraid of making mistakes, can she develop herself? Women here are regarded as white paper while men are regarded as gold. After spoiling, goal remain goal but the white paper can’t be cured. Unreasonable statement. Why people follow unreasonable thing? Why people dare not to complain and make a change to make a better statement? These are just some small part of dark life in here, there are still manyyyyyyyy more. Living here makes me feel uncomfortable and meaningless. Everything seems up side down. I have heard some about USA and I want to better my life there, but I am still not sure whether what I have heard about USA is true or just fake. By asking many people who are studying and living in USA, they say 90% in USA is plus. The US government provides value to life of all people. They also say situations in USA is totally opposite to here. No class system, no discrimination, equal right between men and women, women are not passive as women here because women in USA can do as what men can. They also say, “if u work hard, your life here is much more wonderful to compare to here.” I value hard working because only work hard can pay for good futur, but I still doubt about the meaning of hard working in USA. Does it means work till the person’s energy fall down to zero? The expenses in USA is very high, so the meaning should be like this? If so, I don’t people can have happiness. But perh more

Voting Question: Please proof-read and give your suggestions?

Romeo & Juliet Essay: The Maiden in Modern Society Juliet Capulet, from Shakespeare’s play Romeo & Juliet, and Ariel, from The Little Mermaid, have many things in common. They each have relevance in our modern day society and they can each model for and teach our children in different ways. These two women can show our children, little girls especially, how they shouldn’t act as young women. Juliet is a perfect example of the classic woman; soft-spoken, demure, obedient, young, virginal, sweet, and beautiful. She is bound to obey her parents, but more importantly her father. She is relatively happy in this situation because most young women at that time were simply natural-born happy, domesticated homemakers who hung in a state of suspended animation until a man – typically upper-class, white and handsome – comes and takes them away. By simply taking the abusive ignorance of her father, she continues to allow his control over her life. It was typical in that day in age for a father to pawn off his daughter, marry her to someone with a higher social rank than their own, in order to bring honor to his family. But, as a young woman, Juliet should have stepped back and realized her own intelligence, strength and her ability to be independent rather than letting her father dictate her life. When she finally takes her first steps towards independence as a woman, she walks straight into the clutches of another man who will control her life – Romeo. Typically, the marriage ceremony signifies that the woman was nothing more than a possession being passed from her father over to her husband. In Act III, Juliet speaks of her new husband, Romeo, saying, “Shall I speak ill of him that is my husband? Ah, poor my lord, what tongue shall smooth thy name, when I, thy three hours wife, have mangled it? But, wherefore, villain, didst thou kill my cousin? That villain cousin would have kill'd my husband”. She has so soon become deeply attached to Romeo that she is willing to turn her back on her family, her own kinsman, Tybalt. She gives him nary a thought, deciding quickly that her loyalty lies with Romeo over Tybalt, calling him a villain. Being passed off in marriage this way, changing her alliances so severely, is a hard thing to do. This limits the feelings of personal worth in a young woman and can make anyone feel weaker and in our modern society, the equality between men and women is stressed quite often. By allowing herself to be simply passed off as if she were no more than an item to be traded with, Juliet is losing her place in society. Men rule in the world of a patriarchal society, making it difficult for a woman to speak her mind or be treated as an equal. The white male society is dominated by males, mainly upper-class, and really affects young women. Age and gender truly can set you at a disadvantage if you’re a young, innocent woman. As for me, I’m a fifteen-year-old woman and I am somewhat affected by the white male society, but obviously not as much as poor Juliet had been. It’s difficult for me to be taken seriously as a competitor in athletics, academics or even when applying for jobs out in the real world – many parts of the world, as well as some areas of our own country, don’t hire women and if they do, the pay is much less for women than men, even when they hold the same job. Some people truly believe that men are superior to women and Juliet’s weak acceptance of her father’s demands shows a lack of strength and moral character. In my opinion, Juliet is not a very good example for young girls today to follow because so much has changed from Juliet’s time to now; men and women are considered to be equal and women don't need to be 'the weaker sex' anymore. more

Resolved Question: Why do anti-feminists have so little faith in equal rights?

When I hear people complaining about unequal laws in the US, I just think it's their own fault for not passing the ERA. But it amazes me that people complain of unequal rights in the UK. We passed very clear and explicit gender protection laws with the Equal Pay Act and the Sex Discrimination Act way back in the 1970s. This is why we have never had affirmative action for women, never had different sentencing guidelines, never had more grammar school places for girls than for boys (even though girls do better on the exams). Women cannot be given extra help in the UK, even if we wanted to - which I don't think we do. Even during the second world war, all single women between the ages of 20 and 30 were conscripted, and with today's equal rights legislation, it would be extraordinarily difficult to call for a draft that only applied to men and not women. I have great faith in the UK's equal rights legislation - but why don't anti-feminists? :-)keypoint - the Equalities Bill allows for affirmative action for men as well - ie, teachers, etc. I don't agree with it, but I can see it's equal :-) more

Resolved Question: Has Obama done anything for anyone besides his political cronies?

Rewarded abortionists by freeing federal funds to pay for abortions both here and overseas. • Rewarded terrorists by not interrogating them too roughly. • Rewarded terrorists by closing Guantanamo Bay (Gitmo). • Punished the U.S. military by halting commissions until Gitmo is “reviewed.” • Rewarded the domestically-held terrorist Ali Saleh Kahlah al-Marri by “reviewing” his case. • Rewarded Gitmo detainee Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, an al-Qaida suspect in USS Cole in 200, that killed 17 U.S. sailors, by dropping charges against him. • Rewarded terrorists from Hamas by granting them up to $20.3 million for the “conflict victims in Gaza.” • Rewarded terrorists by establishing a redress process if those suspected of wrongdoing are delayed or prohibited from boarding a flight. • Rewarded female career “victims” by signing the “Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act” so women can wage equal-pay lawsuits, not for up to 180 days but for decades in the past. • Rewarded the American-hating president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, by “reaching out” to him — to which the madman demanded that the U.S. apologize to Iran for its actions for “the past 60 years” and remove all U.S. forces from the Middle East. • Rewarded labor unions by revoking a former executive order that forced employers to notify employees of their rights. • Punished faith-based organizations by equating them with “neighborhood partnerships” like Planned Parenthood and ACORN — treating them “like a house of God, in the eyes of the federal government.” • Punished fair-hiring employers by requiring federal executives to hire union-only members. • Punished the American people by issuing numerous draconian environmental dictates that insure zero energy independence for decades to come, if ever. more

Resolved Question: If males and females have the same sex drive then why isn't there as many male prostitutes for women?

I used to feel that the sex drive was equal and after answering a few questions on the subject I actually started to think more deeply about it. In conclusion I feel that women do not have as high a sex drive in general. The evidence is everywhere. Men will actually go out and pay hard earned cash to pay a women to have sex with him. Women even if they do use escorts, so we are told, don't even put the sexual act at the top of their reasons for doing so. Is this argument really a bit silly that we have the same urge to have sex. I know women were repressed in the past but that doesn't mean they have the same need for sex than most males. Or is our definition of sex different and is that what causes the confusion.I am surprised at you snufkin. I had you down as more layed back as that.cap... You can't compare masterbation with the actual act of having sex. Anyway I think toys are a bit sad for males as well as females...just my opinion and I don't use prostitutes but would not rule it out for certain experiences if I am honestJaron. Yes there is truth in that statement However there are women who enjoy sex for the sake of it isn't there?snufkin could that not ligitmately be described as a fetish though? more

Resolved Question: this, is in no way meant to be offensive so pease dont take it as such.?

Something to think about! I have been wondering about why Whites are racists, and no other race is. Proud to be White. Michael Richards makes his point... Michael Richards better known as Kramer from TVs Seinfeld does make a good point. This was his defense speech in court after making racial comments in his comedy act. He makes some very interesting points... How many are actually paying attention to this? There are African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, Arab Americans, etc. And then there are just Americans. You pass me on the street and sneer in my direction. You call me 'White boy,' 'Cracker,' 'Honkey,' 'Whitey,' 'Caveman'.. and that's OK. But when you are called a Nigger, Kike, Towel head, Sand-nigger, Camel Jockey, Beaner, Gook, or Chink ... you say we are a racist. You say that whites commit a lot of violence against you... so why are the ghettos the most dangerous places to live? Y ou have the United Negro College Fund. You have Martin Luther King Day. You have Black History Month. You have Cesar Chavez Day. You have Yom Hashoah. You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi. You have the NAACP. You have BET... If we had WET (White Entertainment Television), we'd be racists. If we had a White Pride Day, you would call us racists. If we had White History Month, we'd be racists. If we had any organization for only whites to 'advance' OUR lives, we'd be racists. We have a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a Black Chamber of Commerce, and then we just have the plain Chamber of Commerce. Wonder who pays for that?? A white woman could not be in the Miss Black American pageant, but any color can be in the Miss America pageant. If we had a college fund that only gave white students scholarships... You know we'd be racists. There are over 60 openly proclaimed Black Colleges in the US. Yet if there were 'White colleges' That would be a racist college. In the Million Man March, you believed that you were marching for your race and rights. If we marched for our race and rights, you would call us racists. You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and you're not afraid to announce it. But when we announce our white pride, you call us racists. You rob us, carjack us, and shoot at us. But, when a white police officer shoots a black gang member up or a black drug-dealer running from the law and posing a threat to society, you call him a racist. I am proud... But you call me a racist. Why is it that only whites are made out to be racists? personally, i think that all mankind should be treated equal. but it does seems as if the white people of this country is label a racist. we have lost most of OUR RIGHTS in this country. We won't stand up for ourselves! BE PROUD TO BE WHITE! It's not a crime yet ... but getting real close.Elanshav, you hit the nail on the head. thank you for the correct and best answer. i really feel the same as youhey Maria, why a pic of only your chest? is your month so big that when you open it, your whole face disappear. and when it comes to learning, maybe you would do well by opening a book instead your month, just maybe or maybe not more

Resolved Question: I am 5 months pregnant and stuck in a lease on the third floor with no elevator, can I get out of this?

Here's my story: I am stuck in a lease and I am 5 months pregnant. The apartment is on the 3rd floor, so I have to walk up and down 4 flights of stairs daily (2 flights cut in half equaling 4). I have a dog I need to bring out to go potty often, and my doctor has advised me by my 7 month I need to avoid the stairs all together until after the delivery. There is no elevator and/or wheelchair accessible entry to the third floor. I have talked to my landlord and she wants me to sign something saying I am giving my 60 day notice and can leave after that period as long as she has found someone else to take over my lease. I will loose my deposit. However in the event she can not find someone within the 60 days, then I will be required to keep paying month to month until she does find someone who passes her background/credit check. I am hesitant to sign this because that is saying in the event she does not find someone I am still liable, however my doctor has advised me it is in grave danger to my health to walk up and down stairs past 7 months of being pregnant, for I have a high risk pregnancy. Does anyone know of any ACTS or LAWS that would be in my benefit to help me get out of my lease early. I do not mind waiting 60 days, but after that I will be 7 months and I need out. Please give your advice. It is a condo owned by an individual owner..she only owns one unit (the one i'm in) so she does not own any of the other properties on site; therefore, going to a bottom floor property is not an option. more

Resolved Question: Where do you stand on the issue of Affirmative Action now, I think it should be abolished - looks like Barry ?

disagrees: "Combat Employment Discrimination: President Obama and Vice President Biden will work to overturn the Supreme Court's recent ruling that curtails racial minorities' and women's ability to challenge pay discrimination. They will also pass the Fair Pay Act, to ensure that women receive equal pay for equal work, and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. " How do you feel about Hate Crime Legislation ?(I am against it for two reasons 1) it is VERY rarely applied when the victim is a white, particularly if white male and 2) it is a further punishment that prosecutes thought - unconstitutional) Expand Hate Crimes Statutes: President Obama and Vice President Biden will strengthen federal hate crimes legislation, expand hate crimes protection by passing the Matthew Shepard Act, and reinvigorate enforcement at the Department of Justice's Criminal Section.http://www.whitehouse.gov/agenda/civil_rights/I assume he is talking about the Lily Ledbetter Act in the first instance - which is absurd.Does this sound unifying or fair to everyone?: Rev Joseph Lowry from Obama inauguration. . . . “We ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around, when yellow will be mellow, when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right,” Lowery said to laughter from the vast audience.I have reported the racists rants - let's stay on topic shall we? I guess you fail to realize the TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS THAT HAVE BEEN SPENT ON PROGRAMS TO EQUALIZE THINGS IN THE INNER CITIES - BUT UNTIL YOU HAVE SYSTEMIC CHANGES TAKE PLACE IE MOTHERS AND FATHERS WHO RAISE THEIR CHILDREN, WHO WORK TO PROVIDE FOR THEIR CHILDREN, WHO TEACH THEIR CHILDREN TO BE SELF-SUFFICIENT - THERE WILL BE NO CHANGES AND THROWING MORE MONEY AT THE PROBLEM WILL NOT SOLVE IT.CTB: thank you for an honest hard-felt opinion - I disagree but I respect your opinion as presented.Sorry I meant heart-felt not hard-felt. more

Resolved Question: Why Wont So Called Christians Release Repentant Criminals?

Concerning Matthew 18:25-35 Passages "He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion" Proverbs 28:13 "For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; Mercy triumphs over judgment." James 2:13 "The merciful man does himself good, but the cruel man does He harms." Proverbs 11:17 Please read and pay attention to whole detail of outline so you won’t give a stupid response. Their are practical forms of legislation and social reasoning that can confirm the logos behind what you may deem in prejudice ridiculous Please Don't resort to stupid insults and slander either Note: Don’t say give to Caesar what is Caesars that’s basically calling America the reborn roman empire in which case its satanic and to be destroyed by the Stone that is Jesus Think of it this way can you say that when you’re spiritual you refuse those seeking mercy and charity and condemn those who ask for it to hell. Can you say when you’re feeling nostalgic that incarceration prevents crime and repeat offenses? Recidivism rates would argue against your flawed logic. Can you state that change of behavior and rehabilitation comes from external means or is it an internal development? That being said why anyone would believe in changing their behavior when they have no reason to and while they dislike prison it really fairs little punishment but to those few who are preyed on and many of them are divided from population (Some however are not and receive unfair cruel and unusual punishment). So why should anyone want to change or believe in god when we ourselves show hypocrisy in our hearts and actions how then can such individuals make internal changes needed for true rehabilitation that without released into society after incarcerated actually makes the public more a danger from the inmate who has become psychologically warped from the lifestyle of incarceration and given little helpful tools but to network and make more contacts creating a more intelligent and dangerous criminal Now for legislative logos statistics show increased cost of funding in criminal justice and punishment has in no way reduced crime in fact just the opposite we are seeing a trend of increase 5 times the average we are also seeing a dramatic increase in cost and prison over crowding while sociology experiments are showing that merciful acts in state show a dramatic reduction in crime such examples were taken during the Vietnam war and drug rehab center legislation prior to mandatory minimum sentence concluding it just feels good and costs a lot in fact white color crimes are said to be more expensive to jail then a hospital bill and drug offenders on average are more expensive to jail then rehab programs Yes put away violent offenders but their are alternative punishments to non violent offenders or at least reduced sentencing The real question we should be asking ourselves is what is the correlation between incarceration and crime rates experts say their is none that incarceration does not equal change in behavior so for all our incarceration are we really safer experts say no Can we draw out a public safety plan that is fiscally sane remember your flipping the bill for these people The answer is yes many bills offering programs without sentence or reduced sentence are offered part of religious rehabilitation program even with violent offenders in church services and anger management but because of republicans and conservative Christians this bill has been shot down Also we must come to the moral realization that prison is in no way fair punishment I mean that the punishment is not equal to all inmates and that constitutes a moral ethic of unequal punishment both in Case judgment and sentencing and prison accommodations as well for a select minority cruel and unusual Prison does not fair equal to all people You have leaders soldiers fish etc not preventing such action of prison gangs running prisons is unconstitutional under the eight, ninth and tenth amendments in the bill of rights I think corporal punishment if agreed upon should be administered by government not by underground seedy organizations like prison gangs that are obviously cruel and unusual in addition safety regulation has occurred for prison inmates increasing Co Officers and was effective in Texas but the law was later removed by you guessed it Conservative Christian republicans Quote: To repeat same activity expecting different result is insanity. Do we not do that with the aspect of incarceration seeing only increase in prison populations? Note: The Separation of church and state is just a clause How Is Church and State Divided? Resolved Question: Here's my platform. Would you vote for me? why or why not?

My Republican Views: -Pro-patriot act (safety first) -Pro-life -Anti-Affirmative Action -Make it voluntary to pay into social security -Replace the irs with national sales tax -Require welfare recipients to pass drug tests My Democratic Views: -Against Iraq War -Pro-stem cell research -Gear tax cuts towards the middle class -Let gays marry, "To each his own." -Civil unions demonstrate "separate but equal" which is unconstitutional. -Increase public assistance to help those legitimately in need -Use death penalty less often -Pro-gun control, ban assualt weapons, require background checks, reasonable restrictions -Tax Churches -Raise standards for a business to be considered "non-profit" tax-exempt. My Independent Views: -Ban smoking in public places -Bailout was necessary -In favor of alternative to bailout: Instead of loaning big companies $700 billion...........give 7 million people each $100,000. The downside however, is that this would have to be a gift, not a loan.-Allow free trade; it may lose jobs for America, but it will bring us lower prices. We should be investing in professional jobs, not manufacturing jobs.edw I'll tell you why: Because less than 7 million people lost their jobs. more

Resolved Question: Would you vote for me? Why or why not?

I share views from both major parties. Officially I'm a Democrat, but I do not vote party-line. I have a mind of my own. WAR -I'm against the Iraq War. -30,000 troop surge in Afghanistan was the right thing to do. WELFARE -Recipients should be required to pass drug tests! -Increase public assistance to those who are in legitimate need -Don't give the homeless money...........Give them homes. I'M PRO-LIFE -Pro-Patriot Act -Pro-Gun control -Pro-stem cell reserach -Use death penalty less often. -Restrict & Ban abortions (especially partial-birth abortions) -Life begins at conception CIVIL RIGHTS -Let gays marry, "To each his own." -Civil Unions demonstrate "separate but equal" which is unconstitutional. -AGAINST Affirmative Action: Don't make hiring decisions based on whether they are minorities. TAX REFORM -Tax Churches and raise the standards for a service to be considered "non-profit" tax-exempt. -Replace irs with national sales tax -Use alternative revenue sources to replace taxes; higher fines on criminals & traffic violations -Gear tax cuts towards the middle class, I pretty much don't give a crap what the rich have to pay in taxes RESTRICT SMOKING -Raise sales tax on cigarrettes and using that money to fight cancer -Ban smoking in public places -Allow hospitals to have a policy where they don't hire smokers ECONOMY -Against social security: Let people manage their own money. SS should be voluntary to pay into. -Maintain a mixed economy; part capitalist part socialist -Enforce mandatory paid vacations like they do in Europe -My position on Universal Healthcare: We need to come up with a better way to pay for it. -Bush medicare bill was a mistake. -I believe the bailout was necessary. And look on the bright side; that bailout wasn't a gift; it was a loan. They owe us that money back. But we've already bailed them out once.....If they ask for another, the answer is NO.FREE TRADE -Allow it, it may lose facotry jobs but it gives us lower prices. And the most important jobs are not the labor-factory ones. more

Resolved Question: How can I become more likeable socially?

I am handicapped college graduate who has recently got her driver's license after a long struggle and is working on getting a car and a full time job in my field (computer science). So as a result, I have been sort of socially isolated which is why I am SO looking forward to getting a car (but I am in a catch-22 situation at the moment... need the car to get to work but need a job to pay for a car). Anyways, I do not get to spend much time with friends/peers as I should for somebody my age. Most of my friends are working and gotten into serious relationships and also spend lots of their free time doing athletic activities that I can't participate in because I am handicap. I do not have any ill will towards any of my friends (specifically my best friends whom I have known for a long time) but I have been a little peeved lately being "left behind" because they never call or hang out with me anymore but they act like nothing has changed but things are certainly not the same. Even when I do get to see any of them (which has only been during major holiday events e.g. Christmas parties), I feel estranged and awkward and they don't really do anything to make it easier. I feel like I am off to the side always listening to somebody else yammering on about people I don't know or topics that I can't really contribute to. Like rock climbing... my so called "best friend" is majorly into rock climbing now and obviously that's not something I know much about. So I try to be polite and listen but even when I try to ask questions to show interest and to try to participate in the conversation... I get really short answers where I feel like an idiot for not knowing what they know... like its so obvious to them or something. So then I'll get really quiet and continue being polite and just listen. I am not the type of person who has to be the center of attention but I don't like feeling like an outsider either. What is worse, is that after one of my friends has been monopolizing the conversation for the past hour, suddenly they will point out the fact that I have been quiet in front of everybody as if something were wrong or as if I had a problem or not having a good time. I don't know what I am supposed to do! It would be nicer if they just showed interest in something I have been doing instead of pointing out that I have been quiet. I don't even know how to respond to that without giving someone the wrong idea. I just said "I'm just listening..." and shrugged my shoulders. But then they just went back to yapping about more stuff that I couldn't contribute to. This was around Thanksgiving and needless to say, I did not really have a good time even though I was polite and tried to pretend to be happy. I have more Christmas parties to go to over the next week and I want to be able to handle these better. I want to know something I can do to not be such an outsider looking in. I am not looking to be the center of attention or anything (in fact, I kinda hate that actually)... I just want to be a part of the group... an equal among my peers. I thought about not going but then they would just think I had a problem and it would come off as having an attitude. It would also break tradition as we ALWAYS get together around the holidays ever since we were teenagers. I really do want to stay friends with these guys... but I also want them to have basic respect for me. I also don't want to try too hard anymore either... because I have done that in the past (i.e. gone out of my way to do nice things for my friends)... and I ended up feeling a little like someone who is lonely and desperately reaching out... just a little though, not in a major way because I didn't do anything THAT major. The original intention was just to do something nice and "bond" a bit after not having seen any of them in SO long... plus it was the holidays. And they were polite... but it seemed a little like they were just being polite... and not like they took any genuine joy like I had expected or hoped. Anyways... I will not be going out of my again like that... at least not for awhile. But I need some advice on how get back on the same page as my friends. I really don't want to get mad and end up having to get into an ugly confrontation even though I think they have been a little too self-absorbed and unfair lately. I want to be a bigger person than that. Getting upset I think would just strip me of the little dignity that I have left. All I really want is to be able to talk to my friends like we did in the good old days... making jokes and laughing... etc. I mean, last time, because I couldn't think of anything to talk about... I tried showing my friend a funny youtube video when he was on his laptop and he barely laughed and started talking to other people about this website he heard about. And I know for a fact that it was a funny video because other people have cracked up laughing before. He just barely chuckled and didn't really seem to appreci* appreciate the fact that I was trying to make him laugh. Just a little bit of positive feedback, at least for the effort, would have been nice. Not that I really care about that, but its just an example of how things were... so you understand what I mean about feeling like an outsider. more

Voting Question: Do we have a case against our landlord? [Need Advice!]?

Hello, My boyfriend and I are going through a huge ordeal. Basically, we've been kicked out of our apartment after having lived here since the end of September. My boyfriend and I are extremely quiet, hard-working 20-somethings. We don't party, drink, smoke, or use drugs. In early october, we asked them to keep their kids quieter [they just around upstairs allday long, they've never gone out to play] and they also scream all day. They're very violent, and it's frightening. A week or so after we moved in, I started getting terrible headaches. I went to the hospital and had an MRI. I was told I was having horrible, excruciatingly painful migraines. After 3 more weeks we once again asked the guy upstairs if they could keep it down. We basically have been living by their schedule. We're up when they are, we sleep only when they sleep [which isn't much.] Once we brought it to his attention again he told us we should start looking for another place to live. The next day he left my boyfriend a voicemail telling him we had 1 month to get out. So my boyfriend then told him that he didnt want to be here past the 15th, because the guy/owner had made it so unpleasent for us. He actually had the AUDACITY to tell my boyfriend that we could just go home to our parents houses...as if controls our lives. We believe that the place is ILLEGAL, though we weren't aware of this at first certain things have now made us think that it is a) We were unable to get cable tv, internet, or phone in our name but when he [the owner] called he had no problem getting it in his name b) After we gave him checks with the address and the word basement notated, he scratched out the word basement. c) he says he doesnt want to accept checks because the 'town is strict' about basements or something like that. we think that's code for illegal. d) he doesn't want to have to go through the bank to get his money [and risk getting caught?! oh noes] we don't know who to contact to confirm whether or not it is illegal, but we don't doubt that it is. Last night, he used his key and walked into our apartment [we didn't feel like answering the door, we don't HAVE to answer it.] and confronted my boyfriend. He had the nerve to yell at my boyfriend in our apartment. I don't care if it is his house, we paid the rent. He has done nothing but act like an asshole since Oct. 31st We're afraid to talk, have the tv on, lights on...even to flush the toilet. Because we don't want him to come here again. We just want to get the fuck out. We can't even pack because of this crap. He claims we owe him $150 for the cable. we paid what we owed him but we don't feel we should have to pay the setup or installation fees considering we didn't plan on getting the cable for a month. if that was the case we wouldn't have bothered getting it in the first place. He's threatned to "talk to the legal" [his words, he's not from the US] because of this money. We don't think he would do that because the place is IlLEGAL and he'd get in trouble. We've done the research and you can't except rent for an ILLEGAL apartment in New jersey. Infact, there's no such thing as rent. Moreover, according to the law, we think he may owe us 6 times the rent [somewhere in the neighborhood of $5,000] for kicking us out. His reasoning is that it will now cost him 3 grand extra to have people living in the basement [insurance]. We think that's BS,but regardless, here are the laws: 2A:18-61.1h. Reimbursement to displaced tenant 4. a. If a residential tenant is displaced because of an illegal occupancy in a residential rental premises pursuant to paragraph (3) of subsection g. of section 2 of P.L.1974, c.49 (C.2A:18-61.1) and the municipality in which the rental premises is located has not enacted an ordinance pursuant to section 3 of P.L.1993, c.342 (C.2A:18-61.1g), the displaced residential tenant shall be entitled to reimbursement for relocation expenses from the owner in an amount equal to six times the monthly rental paid by the displaced person. b. Payment by the owner shall be due five days prior to the removal of the displaced tenant. If payment is not made within this time, interest shall accrue and be due to the displaced residential tenant on the unpaid balance at the rate of 18% per annum until the amount due and all interest accumulated thereon shall be paid in full. c. If reimbursement for which an owner is liable is not paid in full within 30 days of removal of the tenant, the unpaid balance thereof and all interest accruing thereon and, in addition thereto, an amount equal to six times the monthly rental paid by the displaced tenant shall be a lien upon the parcel of property on which the dwelling of the displaced residential tenant was located, for the benefit of that tenant. To perfect the lien, a statement showing the amount and due date of the unpaid balance and identifying the parcel shall be recorded with the county clerk or registrarMy boyfriend emailed a law office but they haven't gotten back to him. here is what he wrote: "I moved in into my current basement apartment with my girlfriend in October. We tried to install cable and the cable company told us that they weren't able to install it in the basement unit we were in because they couldn't find it in their system for the address we provided... instead the landlord installed the cable under his name. We paid the month rent with two checks, one that my girlfriend provided of half the month's rent, and the other check that i provided with the other half of the rent ( on the 'Notes' section of the check i wrote the address of the apartment with the word basement ). When I viewed my statement online of the check that he cashed, he scratched out the word basement from the check (but you could still make out it said basement). Well, the reason I writing to you for help is that, recently (October 30th), he told us that he wanted us out by December 1st( his reason was because his insurance is going to charge him 3K more because he has tenants living in the basement, etc.. ). Now, we have just started settling down and he is telling us to move. We are trying to look for places, but he constantly harasses us and bangs on the door, and comes into the apartment without our permission. He doesn't want to accept checks anymore and wants us to pay him in cash only. I am very suspicious about him and this apartment being illegal, and that the main reason he only wants cash and is kicking us out is because he wants to save his own skin (illegal renting) and at the same time squeeze money from us and scream at us(about his lawyers) to make us afraid. I would like to move out by the 15th because I really do not like this situation, but it is hard gathering money again to look for another apartment. Thank you for taking the time in reading into my situation and for any assistance you might be able to provide us"We want to talk to a lawyer and find out what our options are, and we want to stop this jerk from harassing us. We'd also like the money we paid for rent, if at all possible, since we're NOT okay with the situation and the apartment being illegal. more

Voting Question: Can anyone proofread my paper and also give some suggestions?

Women Earn Less Than Men In Today’s Society Women in the United States of America’s workforce today still face inequality in pay; earning less than men in today’s society. Women earn less than men primarily because of sexual discrimination, motherhood, and sexual harassment. However, some scholars refute that women earn less than men. In fact, some scholars argue that women chose to make less income than men, and that women do not make less than men because of sexual discrimination. Women in today’s society should have the same socioeconomic status as men; as well as the same opportunities and pay in the workplace . Women have been fighting for rights for centuries up until now. The first action that took place was the Women’s Right Movement which started in 1848 in Seneca Falls, NY. The convention meeting among the women would be the first step in history towards equal rights for women. The Women’s Right Movement began to change the perception of the way they were looked at in society. The women rights movement focused on equal pay for women, education, and property rights. In the 19th century a bill was passed in 1963 called the Equal Pay Act which deplored sexual discrimination from the workplace. However, women in the 21st century today are still being discriminated against and paid less than men even though it is violating federal laws. Sexual discrimination in the workplace against women is common among corporate businesses and small businesses. Women are sexually discriminated against because of society’s Biglow 2 view of gender roles and being that we live in a male dominated society. Women often face occupational segregation; it is believed that women can’t hold certain positions such as drive a forklift, be a carpenter, a miner or several other occupations because of their gender this is equal to sexual discrimination. According to the article “Women Still Earn Less Than Men Because of Sex Discrimination” written by Evelyn Murphy and E.J. Graff “Employers still flatly refuse to hire fully qualified women into a wide variety of jobs: forklift drivers, firefighters, salespeople, electricians, regional managers, stockbrokers, senior executives. Or they hire women, but refuse to promote them—as happens to grocery clerks, police officers, university professors, and management analysts” (Women Earn Still Earn Less Than Men pg2). From this above statement we can examine that women are expected to do jobs within their gender role. Gender roles play a big part in sexual discrimination because gender roles are the behavior norms associated with being a male or female. For example, men are supposed to be the provider and take car of the family’s finances and women are to be mothers and raise the family and do cooking and cleaning. Women lose thousands in earnings over a lifetime because of sexual discrimination even if the are college graduates. According to the same article it reveals “ A college graduate loses $1.2 million. A young woman who graduated from college last spring and went right to work would, over her lifetime, make $1.2 million less than the young man who received his diploma next to her” ( Women Earn Less..). This proves that being a women and having an education doesn’t guarantee that she will earn top pay because the man next to her that earned the same degree than her will earn more than she does in a lifetime. Motherhood is the best experience a women can accomplish in life, but when you become pregnant, and are working, it can become a problem. Women who choose motherhood Biglow 3 have the hardest time figuring out when they should tell their employer because they are afraid of discrimination, demotion, or a pay cut, and getting their schedules to work around being a mom. According to the article “MOTHER’S ARE DISCRIMINATED IN THE WORKPLACE” it states “Today, 72 percent of American mothers work outside the home, yet companies have been slow to adapt to their needs with part-time or flex-time schedules” (Mothers Are Discriminated In the Workplace). From the above passage, it can be seen that companies aren’t adapting to mother’s and their needs which causes men to be more in demand and women to lose out on earnings that could put them in the lead for equal pay. Sexual harassment is also a major reason why women earn less than men in the workplace. Many times, when women report sexual harassment, they either get fired or demoted. For example, when women make reports of sexual harassment, they are often demoted or fired because they decided to expose that they were violated. According to the book Sexual Harassment of Working Women by Catharine A. Mackinnon “ Sexual harassment threatens women in their jobs. It “hinders” women in getting, and keeping a job” (Sexual Harassment of Working Women pg 206). From this statement, it shows that sexual discrimination can be a serious factor in employment. Women should not have to weigh their options and choose to decide be more

Resolved Question: To all voters out there...will you help out?

Dear Friends, As of now, I will no longer shop at Walmart stores. It's time for us to let Walmart know we want justice for all employees. If Obama is elected, he will require companies like Walmart to allow all its employees the option of joining a union. Thanks for giving this matter your serious attention. Also, send this note along to you list of contacts and ask for their support. OBAMA SUPPORTERS & DEMOCRATS; NEE D TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND TAKE A NOTABLE STAND AGAINST THIS..... ________________________________________ WAL-MART OPPOSES OBAMA PRESIDENCY..... Wal-Mart is taking this outrageous step because Democrat Barack Obama has committed to pass the Employee Free Choice Act to restore workers' freedom to bargain for fair wages, health care,20decent working conditions and a real voice on the job. All of America 's workers have the right to freely decide whom to vote for independent of employer pressure and intimidation. So, please forward this email to everyone you know. Be sure to get the word out. Let's hit them in their pocket book. STOP giving money to Wal-Mart Republ icans and Corporate Neo-Nazis. We need to let our money do our talking. DON'T SHOP AT WAL-MART. Let's take them to school and hit them where it hurts – in their greedy little pocket books! Corporate giants like Wal-Mart have been suppressing workers' wages and passing along health care costs to hardworking taxpayers like you for years. Wal-Mart executives are getting rich, while we're being left behind. They understand what is at stake in this election, and so do we--a real voice at work for: -- Fair pay; -- Health care for all; -- Equal treatment; -- Safe workplaces; and -- A secure retirement. The Wall Street Journal reports that Wal-Mart is telling its managers to tell employees not to vote for Democrats (OBAMA). Thanks!I understand Beth. You gotta do what you gotta do. For some Walmart is the cheapest out there. I am just fortunate to be able to have a Target, a doller store etc close by. But I do understand situations like that. They have every right at the moment to unionize if they wish. That is not what I am arguing. My point is that if Obama wins there will be no choice. It will be his way or the highway. He doesn't want people to have freedom of much of anything so he will limit what people choose to do. more

Resolved Question: WHY DO IGNORANT PEOPLE KEEP SAYING THAT THE ONLY REASON WHY BLACK PEOPLE ARE VOTING 4 OBAMA BECAUSE HE'S BLACK?

IM VOTING FOR OBAMA BECAUSE HE STANDS FOR SOMETHING AND HE WILL MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN THIS COUNTRY...... * Barack Obama will reform No Child Left Behind: Obama and Biden believe teachers should not be forced to spend the academic year preparing students to fill in bubbles on standardized tests and he will improve the assessments used to track student progress to measure readiness for college. * Invest in early childhood education: The Obama-Biden comprehensive "Zero to Five" plan will provide critical support to young children and their parents. And they will help states move toward voluntary, universal pre-school. * Make college affordable to all Americans: Obama and Biden will create a new American Opportunity Tax Credit worth $4,000 in exchange for community service. It will cover two-thirds the cost of tuition at the average public college or university and make community college tuition completely free for most students. * Barack Obama will combat employment discrimination: Obama and Biden will work to overturn the Supreme Court's recent ruling that curtails women’s and racial minorities' ability to challenge pay discrimination. They will also pass the Fair Pay Act to ensure that women receive equal pay for equal work and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. * Strengthen civil rights enforcement: Obama and Biden will reverse the politicization that has occurred in the Bush Administration's Department of Justice. They will put an end to the ideological litmus tests used to fill positions within the Civil Rights Division. * Expand hate crime statutes: Obama and Biden will strengthen federal hate crimes legislation, expand hate crimes protection by passing the Matthew Shepard Act, and reinvigorate enforcement at the Department of Justice's Criminal Section. # Barack Obama will provide a tax cut for working families: Obama and Biden will restore fairness to the tax code and provide 95 percent of working Americans the tax relief they need. They will create a new "Making Work Pay" tax credit of up to $500 per person, or $1,000 per working family. # Provide tax relief for small businesses and startups: Obama and Biden will eliminate all capital gains taxes on startup and small businesses to encourage innovation and job creation. # Fight for fair trade: Obama and Biden will fight for a trade policy that opens up foreign markets to support good American jobs. They will use trade agreements to spread good labor and environmental standards around the world * Barack Obama will defeat terrorism worldwide: Obama and Biden will find, disrupt, and destroy al Qaeda; prepare the military to meet 21st century threats; and win “the Battle of Ideas” by ensuring American foreign policy is consistent with America's traditional values. * Prevent nuclear terrorism: Obama and Biden will lead the effort to secure nuclear weapons materials at vulnerable sites within four years and help our allies stop the smuggling of weapons of mass destruction. * Strengthen American biosecurity: Obama and Biden will work to prevent bioterror attacks and mitigate consequences by improving U.S. intelligence collection and response management. Resolved Question: If you think that Reverend is an issue, will you watch this interview?

I know it is a little long, and I am sure that you can get shorter snippets on the youtube, but I think if you are going to attack a man you should have more at hand than the phrase "God [smite] America." http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/04252008/watch.html Even if you don't agree with him, can you not acknowledge that he has an overall positive impact on his Chicago community? Is it terrible that African-Americans might have a church that is geared towards their historical struggles and those struggles that fill so much of the Bible? And even if you do not watch the video of him giving the sermon, contained in part on the video I linked to and on youtube. Won't you read this excerpt: "And the United States of America government, when it came to treating her citizens of Indian descent fairly, she failed. She put them on reservations. When it came to treating her citizens of Japanese descent fairly, she failed. She put them in internment prison camps. When it came to treating citizens of African descent fairly, America failed. She put them in chains. The government put them on slave quarters, put them on auction blocks, put them in cotton fields, put them in inferior schools, put them in substandard housing, put them in scientific experiments, put them in the lowest paying jobs, put them outside the equal protection of the law, kept them out of their racist bastions of higher education and locked them into position of hopelessness and helplessness. The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law, and then wants us to sing God bless America? No, no, no. Not God bless America; God d*** America! That's in the Bible, for killing innocent people. God d*** America for treating her citizen as less than human. God d*** America as long as she keeps trying to act like she is God and she is supreme!" Now I have had a little experience with some of the more fundamentalist Christians (white ones), and they have a huge problem with country coming before God. That is more or less where he is coming from. That as long as America does what she thinks is right, instead of what God says is right, America does not warrant God's blessing, as she is not following God. So, is Reverend Wright being unreasonable? If so, why do you think he is? Why is it wrong for a member of a historically disadvantaged community wrong to read their religion from their community's perspective? Are you uncomfortable with the mix of Christianity and race? More or less, I would like to know why people think Reverend Wright is a negative issue, if they do, after getting the whole story. more

Voting Question: Do people understand what socialism is?

Or do they just throw it around because it sounds scary? I'm not voting for Obama or McCain. But I just laugh when I keep hearing how Obama is a socialist. What in the world do you think you've had for the past eight years? -- No Child Left Behind -- Medicare prescription coverage -- The bailout -- Stimulus checks That is ALL "socialist." And all either proposed or supported by a Republican president. Social Security is "socialist." So is Medicare, Medicaid, welfare, unemployment benefits, the federal income tax, the Federal Reserve, the Department of Education, the SEC, and Sarbanes-Oxley. Every single one of those things involves government meddling in the free market. Yet no Republican president has worked to overthrow them. And I'll bet most of the people going on about how Obama is a "socialist" support one or more of those things. It's hilarious. Obama and McCain are both going to meddle in health care. That's "socialist." McCain has a mortgage bailout plan. That's "socialist." Taxation alone does not equal socialism. Yet people are convinced Obama will tax them to death. He won't, but how is that worse than borrowing money and adding it to the national debt, to let future generations pay for it? If you buy things for your home, is it better to pay for them up front, or stick it on a credit card? If you say "paying for them up front," that's all taxation is -- responsibly paying for things as you go along, rather than sticking someone else with the bill. And for heaven's sake, anyone who's worried about their freedoms should have been up in arms when the Patriot Act was passed. That's the most un-American piece of legislation ever to come out of Congress. Wake up, people. Stop being brainwashed by the GOP propaganda machine. Your party is just as "socialist," anti-freedom, and Big Government as the Democrats are. more

Resolved Question: Californians, what is your vote on prop 8?

When Gay Rights and Religious Liberties Clash by Barbara Bradley Hagerty NPR.org, June 13, 2008 · In recent years, some states have passed laws giving residents the right to same-sex unions in various forms. Gay couples may marry in Massachusetts and California. There are civil unions and domestic partnerships in Vermont, New Jersey, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Oregon. Other states give more limited rights. Armed with those legal protections, same-sex couples are beginning to challenge policies of religious organizations that exclude them, claiming that a religious group's view that homosexual marriage is a sin cannot be used to violate their right to equal treatment. Now parochial schools, "parachurch" organizations such as Catholic Charities and businesses that refuse to serve gay couples are being sued — and so far, the religious groups are losing. Here are a few cases: Adoption services: Catholic Charities in Massachusetts refused to place children with same-sex couples as required by Massachusetts law. After a legislative struggle — during which the Senate president said he could not support a bill "condoning discrimination" — Catholic Charities pulled out of the adoption business in 2006. Housing: In New York City, Yeshiva University's Albert Einstein College of Medicine, a school under Orthodox Jewish auspices, banned same-sex couples from its married dormitory. New York does not recognize same-sex marriage, but in 2001, the state's highest court ruled Yeshiva violated New York City's ban on sexual orientation discrimination. Yeshiva now allows all couples in the dorm. Parochial schools: California Lutheran High School, a Protestant school in Wildomar, holds that homosexuality is a sin. After the school suspended two girls who were allegedly in a lesbian relationship, the girls' parents sued, saying the school was violating the state's civil rights act protecting gay men and lesbians from discrimination. The case is before a state judge. Medical services: A Christian gynecologist at North Coast Women's Care Medical Group in Vista, Calif., refused to give his patient in vitro fertilization treatment because she is in a lesbian relationship, and he claimed that doing so would violate his religious beliefs. (The doctor referred the patient to his partner, who agreed to do the treatment.) The woman sued under the state's civil rights act. The California Supreme Court heard oral arguments in May 2008, and legal experts believe that the woman's right to medical treatment will trump the doctor's religious beliefs. One justice suggested that the doctors take up a different line of business. Psychological services: A mental health counselor at North Mississippi Health Services refused therapy for a woman who wanted help in improving her lesbian relationship. The counselor said doing so would violate her religious beliefs. The counselor was fired. In March 2001, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit sided with the employer, ruling that the employee's religious beliefs could not be accommodated without causing undue hardship to the company. Civil servants: A clerk in Vermont refused to perform a civil union ceremony after the state legalized them. In 2001, in a decision that side-stepped the religious liberties issue, the Vermont Supreme Court ruled that he did not need to perform the ceremony because there were other civil servants who would. However, the court did indicate that religious beliefs do not allow employees to discriminate against same-sex couples. Adoption services: A same-sex couple in California applied to Adoption Profiles, an Internet service in Arizona that matches adoptive parents with newborns. The couple's application was denied based on the religious beliefs of the company's owners. The couple sued in federal district court in San Francisco. The two sides settled after the adoption company said it will no longer do business in California. Wedding services: A same sex couple in Albuquerque asked a photographer, Elaine Huguenin, to shoot their commitment ceremony. The photographer declined, saying her Christian beliefs prevented her from sanctioning same-sex unions. The couple sued, and the New Mexico Human Rights Commission found the photographer guilty of discrimination. It ordered her to pay the lesbian couple's legal fees ($6,600). The photographer is appealing. Wedding facilities: Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association of New Jersey, a Methodist organization, refused to rent its boardwalk pavilion to a lesbian couple for their civil union ceremony. The couple filed a complaint with the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights. The division ruled that the boardwalk property was open for public use, therefore the Methodist group could not discriminate against gay couples using it. In the interim, the state's Department of Environmental Protection revoked a portion of the association's tax benefits. The case is ongoing. Youth  more

Resolved Question: I have to pay to park in the disabled parking spot at college, legal?

My college is going to make me pay $100 to be able to park in the disabled parking spot even though I'm getting a state disabled parking pass. Is this legal? They say it's because all students have to pay to park in those lots, even though they do have a free parking lot it just up a damn hill and I don't want to walk in sub-zero weather this year and screw my lungs up again. (AKA stop breathing in the middle of the night again.) Federal law states: "Transportation services that an institution provides to its students shall, when viewed in its entirety, be offered to handicapped students in a manner that provides them with opportunities that are equal to those of non-handicapped students. This requirement pertains to all aspects of transportation including student parking..." (Sec 504 of the Rehabilitation Act) Important parts: "...opportunities that are equal to those of non-handicapped students. " "... including student parking..." If non-handicapped students can park for free and yet I need to pay $100 to park because the free parking lot is too far for me to walk, is this equal rights? I understand all students need to pay to park that close, but for crying out loud it's not like I want to have to park that close. Am I missing something here or is the college doing something illegal? Just an additional note, I do get a discount since its normally $300 or something near that but still... Guess I should make this clearer... There is a free parking spot, but because of my disability I can't use it. more

Resolved Question: McCain and the "Equal Pay For Women" vote?

I have a question about this vote (non-vote, I think is the case) that John McCain has taken flak on. I agree the "women need more education" comment was a bit off the mark, but my question stems from the actual legislation. I just took the time and read the actual text of the proposal and would like people's interpretations of what I found. (1) This is not an "equal pay for women" act, but equal pay for ALL. (2) This act would allow anyone to file this claim against a company regardless of when it happened. Someone could claim they were discriminated against 20 years ago if they so chose. (This thought comes from the fact that it amends the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and several others. Grandfather clause?) (3) The act was defeated primarily because it opens the door for frivolous lawsuits. An argument we all know is feasible. It also yields several questions: (1) By disclosing that she was aware of other employees salaries in a company where salaries are confidential, she violated the company's confidentiality policy, which is most likely a termination-level event. Should she be fired for doing so? Seems they would be within their rights. (2) Should something like this be enacted to open companies up to lawsuits stemming from years past? What happens if the employee has moved on to a different position with different wage levels? (3) Is it more a "McCain against women" issue or the actual substance of the bill that makes people angry about this? Thanks for your insight  more

Resolved Question: Instead of Stampeding to Agree With Paulson's Bailout-Would It Be Smarter To Follow THIS Plan by a Candidate? ?

...For President: 1. Congress should hold a series of hearings and invite broad public comment on any proposed bailout. Congress is supposed to be a co-equal branch of our federal government. It needs to stop the stampede to give Bush a $700 billion check. Public hearings should be held to determine what alternatives might exist to the four-page proposal advanced by Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson. 2. Whatever is ultimately done, the bailout plan should not be insulated from judicial review. Remember there is a third co-equal branch of government - the judiciary. The judiciary does not need to review each buy-and-sell decision by the Treasury Department, but there should be some boundaries established to the Treasury Department's discretion, and judicial review is needed to ensure that unbridled discretion is not abused. 3. Sunlight is a good disinfectant. The bailout that is ultimately approved must provide for full and timely disclosure of all bailout details. This will discourage conflicts of interest and limit the potential of sweetheart deals. 4. Firms that accept government bailout monies must agree to disclose their transactions and be more honest in their accounting. They should agree to end off-the-books accounting maneuvers, for example. 5. Taxpayers must be protected by having a stake in any recovery. The bailout plan should provide opportunities for taxpayers to recoup funds that are made available to problem financial institutions or to benefit from the financial institutions' rising stock price and increased profitability after being bailed out. 6. The current so-called "regulators" cannot be trusted. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), "the investigative arm of Congress" and "the congressional watchdog," must regularly review the bailout. We cannot trust the financial "regulators," who allowed the slide into financial disaster, to manage the bailout without outside monitoring. 7. It is time to put the federal cop back on the financial services beat. Strong financial regulations and independent regulators are necessary to rebuild trust in our financial institutions and to prevent further squandering of our tax dollars. The Justice Department and the SEC also need to scrutinize the expanding mess with an eye to uncovering corporate crime and misdeeds. Major news outlets are reporting that the FBI is investigating American International Group, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Lehman Brothers. 8. Cap executive compensation and stop giving the Wall Street gamblers golden parachutes. The CEOs who have created the financial disaster should not be allowed to leave with millions in hand when so many pensioners and small shareholders are seeing their investments evaporate. The taxpayers are bailing out Wall Street so that the financial system continues to function, not to further enrich the CEOs and executives who created this mess. 9. Congress should pass the Financial Consumers' Information and Representation Act, to permit citizens to form a federally-chartered nonprofit membership organization to strengthen consumer representation in government proceedings that concern the financial services industry. As the savings and loan disasters of the 1980s and the Wall Street debacles of the last few years have demonstrated, there is an overriding need for consumers and taxpayers to have the organized means to enhance their influence on financial issues. 10. The repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act, separating traditional banks from investment banks, helped pave the way for the current disaster. It is time to re-regulate the financial sector. The current crisis is also leading to even further conglomeration and concentration in the financial sector. We must revive and apply antitrust principles, so that banking consumers can benefit from competition and taxpayers are less vulnerable to too-big-to-fail institutions, merging with each other to further concentration. 11. Congress should impose a securities and derivatives speculation tax. A tax on financial trading would slow down the churning of stocks and financial instruments, and could raise substantial monies to pay for the bailout. 12. Regulators should impose greater margin requirements, making speculators use more of their own money and diminishing reckless casino capitalism. The proposal was made by Ralph Nader, who like Green Party Candidate Cynthia McKinney and Libertarian Candidate Bob Barr are not allowed to debate by the Corporate-funded GOP/Democrat managed Commission on Presidential Debates. Only the two Wall Street Parties are allowed & with McCain suspending his campaign maybe it will be an evening with Obama? http://www.commondreams.org/view/2008/09/25-1What really makes me sick is seeing Democrats like Shummer and Frank smiling for the cameras tonight and gloating that most are for paulson's plan of robbing the taxpayers. It is times like this that we can see there really is no "opposition" Political Party, just two Wall Street Parties. http://www.counterpunch.org/sharon09252008.html http://www.counterpunch.org/hudson09252008.html more

Resolved Question: Why are the people at Fox News...?

mainly Sean Hannity trying to paint Joe Biden as a sexist? He's clearly taking Joe Biden's words out of context. For the past week,he's been whining about how Joe Biden said that Palin would be a backwards step for women. Joe Biden actually said the following when asked if Palin being in the White House is a step forward for women: "Well look, I think the issue is what does Sarah Palin think? What does she believe? I assume she thinks and agrees with the same policies that George Bush and John McCain think," Biden added. "And that's obviously a backward step for women." So he meant by policy wise. I think what he should've said was that Palin's nomination is historic, but when you get down to the issues,it's a backwards step for women. What's wrong with saying that? No way is Biden sexist. He's the one who passed the Violence Against Women Act. If anyone is sexist,it's John McCain. He voted against equal pay for equal work for women Doesn't Hannity get tired of being such a prick? more

Resolved Question: How would women benefit from anti-feminism? What if we got rid of "equality" legislation since the 1960's?

What would happen if we got rid of all the legislation related to equal pay, sexual harassment, equal education, pregnancy discrimination, paternal/maternal employment leave, marital rape, and violence against women, that have been passed since 1960-how would women (and men) benefit from anti-feminism? This would be some of the legislation that would be erased: 1963 The Equal Pay Act passes, requiring equal wages for women and men doing equal work. It is the first federal law prohibiting sex discrimination. 1964 The Federal Civil Rights Act passes, including Title VII, which guarantees equal opportunity in employment. Title VII is the statutory basis not only for equal opportunity and sex discrimination cases, but, as a subset of the latter, sexual harassment cases as well. The Civil Rights Act creates the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to enforce workplace equality. 1972 Title IX of the Education Amendments Act passes, guaranteeing equal access to academic and athletic resources regardless of gender. 1975 Congress opens U.S. military academies to women 1978 The Pregnancy Discrimination Act becomes federal law, recognizing that discrimination on the basis of pregnancy is discrimination on the basis of sex. The PDA guarantees pregnant women who are capable of working the right to do so, identical to employees with other, but similar, medical conditions. The Act also mandates that employers provide the same benefits to women at any stage of pregnancy, delivery, or recovery from delivery when they are medically unable to work as to all other employees with temporarily disabling conditions. It also forbids workplace discrimination against women based on the mere possibility of pregnancy. 1993 The Family & Medical Leave Act becomes law, based on the research and policy initiatives prepared by the Women's Law and Public Policy Fellowship class of 1985-86. President Bill Clinton selects the FMLA to be the first legislation signed in his presidency. President George Bush had twice vetoed similar bills. 1993 All 50 states make it illegal to rape your spouse. 1994 Passage of the federal Violence Against Women Act creates penalties for interstate stalking and other gender-based crime.  more

Resolved Question: Can someone answer these questions about Obama's speech?

In last night's speech, Obama said the following: (APPLAUSE) Now is the time to help families with paid sick days and better family leave, because nobody in America should have to choose between keeping their job and caring for a sick child or an ailing parent. Now is the time to change our bankruptcy laws, so that your pensions are protected ahead of CEO bonuses, and the time to protect Social Security for future generations. And now is the time to keep the promise of equal pay for an equal day’s work, because I want my daughters to have the exact same opportunities as your sons. (APPLAUSE) 1) Didn't Bill Clinton past the Family Leave Act that gave you sick days and guaranteed your job should you have to leave for an extended illness? 2) Didn't Obama's running mate Joe Biden support the current Bankruptcy act that Bush signed? So he and Joe are at odd over this? For the record, Biden's home state famously holds the incorporation papers of large credit card and financial services companies. He obviously knows how his bread is buttered in Delaware, which means a "profile in courage" by 'ol Joe on the bankruptcy bill was out of the question. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jackson-williams/joe-biden-true-friend-of_b_120776.html 3) How is Obama going to "protect Social Security for future generations"? Again, just words in a speech and again no details. To me this means that the FICA tax is going up again. Will the promises to raise taxes ever stop? Also what is wrong with privitizing Social Security? The Public Employee Retirement Service is a private organization and they can pass want they put into it along to their children. If it is good enough for Obama and crew, why can't you and I do this? 4) The equal pay issue. How is he going to do this? Most women that I have worked with make less money not because they don't do equal work, its because she and the husband decided to have children. So she ends up off for a year or two or five before they come back to work. Thus the man who has been working gets raises, while she is taking care of the kids. Anyone care to talk about this? On topic 4, I am a pig I guess. But here is the law: The Equal Pay Act of 1963 and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act protect workers against wage discrimination. The Equal Pay Act of 1963 prohibits unequal pay to men and women who perform the same job. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits wage discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, religion or national origin. In 1981, the Supreme Court made it clear that Title VII is broader than the Equal Pay Act, and prohibits wage discrimination even when the jobs are not identical. However, wage discrimination laws are poorly enforced and cases are extremely difficult to prove and win. Stronger legislation is needed to address wage discrimination. So basically what it sounds like we need stronger enforcement of the "Equal pay law", now more laws dealing with equal pay. Come on people, think! Also see this article: http://www.three-peaks.net/equalpay.htmOh by the way, I know many women that make 10 times more than I do who work for General Electric. However they are working 80 hour weeks, working until 4 AM, and traveling all over the place. Their husband are the ones making far less than their spouse because they have the high flying career. I would be happy to be a kept man. What are people saying about the speech: Charles Davilla, a retired aircraft engineer and Democrat from Downey, California, said that while Obama said some of ``the things I wanted to hear,'' he ``didn't say how he was going to accomplish them.'' more

Resolved Question: Does this help explain why Jesus wouldn't vote for Barack Nobama?

In February 2004, U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama's wife, Michelle, sent a fund-raising letter with the "alarming news" that "right-wing politicians" had passed a law stopping doctors from stabbing half-born babies in the neck with scissors, suctioning out their brains and crushing their skulls. Michelle called partial-birth abortion "a legitimate medical procedure," and wouldn't supporters please pay $150 to attend a luncheon for her husband, who would fight against "cynical ploy[s]" to stop it? But that's not why Obama's opponent Alan Keyes said Jesus Christ wouldn't vote for him. Obama recalled Keyes' statement in a recent USA Today opinion piece but omitted his reasoning. I know his reasoning, because I was there. As a nurse at an Illinois hospital in 1999, I discovered babies were being aborted alive and shelved to die in soiled utility rooms. I discovered infanticide. Legislation was presented on the federal level and in various states called the Born Alive Infants Protection Act. It stated all live-born babies were guaranteed the same constitutional right to equal protection, whether or not they were wanted. BAIPA sailed through the U.S. Senate by unanimous vote. Even Sens. Clinton, Kennedy and Kerry agreed a mother's right to "choose" stopped at her baby's delivery. The bill also passed overwhelmingly in the House. NARAL went neutral on it. Abortion enthusiasts publicly agreed that fighting BAIPA would appear extreme. President Bush signed BAIPA into law in 2002. But in Illinois, the state version of BAIPA repeatedly failed, thanks in large part to then-state Sen. Barack Obama. It only passed in 2005, after Obama left. I testified in 2001 and 2002 before a committee of which Obama was a member. Obama articulately worried that legislation protecting live aborted babies might infringe on women's rights or abortionists' rights. Obama's clinical discourse, his lack of mercy, shocked me. I was naive back then. Obama voted against the measure, twice. It ultimately failed. In 2003, as chairman of the next Senate committee to which BAIPA was sent, Obama stopped it from even getting a hearing, shelving it to die much like babies were still being shelved to die in Illinois hospitals and abortion clinics. (As chair of that same committee, Obama once abruptly ended a hearing early, right before Scott and Janet Willis, the parents of six children killed as a result of Illinois' drivers licenses for bribes scandal, were to testify in favor of Choose Life license plate legislation. I was there for that one, too. The Willises had traveled three hours. Reporters filled the room. Obama stalled. He later killed the bill when no one was around.) So, the reason Keyes said Jesus Christ wouldn't vote for Barack Obama was because of Obama's fanatical support of abortion to the point of condoning infanticide. In his USA Today opinion piece, Obama admitted being "nagged" by the Jesus-wouldn't-vote-for-him statement, but only because he wished he'd given a different comeback. Obama insinuated opposition to abortion is based only on religion, lecturing pro-lifers like me to "explain why abortion violates some principle that is accessible to people of all faiths, including those with no faith at all." I don't recall mentioning religion when I testified against live-birth abortion. I only recall describing a live aborted baby I held in a hospital soiled utility room until he died, and a live aborted baby who was accidentally thrown into the trash. Neither do I recall religion being brought into the partial-birth abortion ban debate. I recall comparisons made to U.S. laws ensuring animals being killed are treated humanely. I recall testimony that late-term babies feel excruciating pain while being aborted. Obama stated pro-life proposals must be "amenable to reason." OK, Sen. Obama, let's reason. Explain why you support abortion for whatever rationale, at whatever gestation, by whatever means. Explain why you support infanticide, if banning it might interfere with abortion. Then, since you brought it up, explain how, despite all that, you think Jesus should vote for you, either now or in the hereafter, particularly given His statement, "It would be better to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around the neck than to face the punishment in store for harming one of these little ones." Resolved Question: What do we, as UK taxpayers, pay the Royal Family for?

This week, HRH The Prince of Wales - or Chuckie, as some Americans like to call him - decided to stick his head above the parapet yet again to spout off about the supposed evils of genetically modified crops. Just like he's spouted off in the past about Britain's poor architecture, or about putting all of Britain's churches on an equal footing with the Church of England. Now, as far as I'm concerned, he can say we whatever he likes on any subject he chooses: he can talk to every tree and plant in the land for all I care. But why we do pay for Charles to regularly abuse his constitutional position like this? The man has plenty of form: he has established a controversial reputation of making representations to government ministers over the last thirty years or so, either by letter or in person, by promoting his own political views to them in his official capacity. Many ministers felt they were being prevented from doing their jobs properly because they had to spend more time than they felt was necessary politely dealing with his often trifling queries. Enough is enough. I'd like a simple answer to a simple question: what _exactly_ do we pay members of the Royal Family to do? If they want to act like private citizens, then why won't they all do the decent thing and de-throne themselves first and let us become a modern, fully-fledged, twenty-first century republic? If Charles, or any other Royal for that matter, feels so strongly about the way Britain is governed, then they should run for Britain's first-ever elected President (whenever that will be). I would have no problems with that: then at least, if we don't like them, we can get rid of them after four years. But we can't do that with the Royal Family. Otherwise, shut it and shut it for good. I, for one, am sick and tired of paying for this sorry lot.IN RESPONSE: My question is about the _principle_ of paying them to be royal, not the amounts of money involved. In any case, if the Royal Family's 'contribution to the nation' of £100 million was correct - and I have no way verifying whether or not it is - then it's dwarfed by the billions of pounds that businesses make to the Exchequer, but they don't get to have assent on Bills that become Acts: the monarch does, and they have _no_ obligation to read what comes before them. And yes, I would much rather have a British President elected to perform that role, and be paid considerably less than someone who was born into doing it. Like I say, if you don't like them, you can get rid of them after four years. You can't do that with the Royal Family. Why don't people understand this?I'm sorry, but why must I be 'ignorant of the workings of this country' to propound the views that I hold? I rather think that it's precisely _because_ I know enough about what's wrong with the way Britain's politics works to say what I feel. I don't much like our politicians, either, but as I keep saying, if you don't like them, you can always throw them out of office at the next election: YOU CANNOT DO THAT WITH THE ROYAL FAMILY IF YOU DON'T LIKE THEM! And where exactly did I say that I wanted 'Blair or Brown as President'? You have no idea about which party I would vote for. There are conservative republicans out there as well as liberal ones. I'm quite happy to let Liz, Phil and the rest keep what's theirs, including their farmland; they can pay their taxes to the Exchequer as private citizens, which they are _not_ currently, to counter what was said earlier. And by the way, if you'd like to see me killed for treason, at least get your terminology right: it's 'hanged', not 'hung'.Killed, executed .. what's the difference between enemies? Look mate, I have as much of a right to advance my views as you have to advance yours, so don't tell me to leave my own country simply because I'm in the minority. Unfortunately for you and one or two others on here, I'm not going anywhere.Mark G, you give the British monarch more real power than she actually has. Essentially, she has three, as described by Walter Bagehot: "the right to be consulted; the right to encourage, the right the warn." That's it, finito. She has no such responsbility to "...ensure that national symbology is not hijacked by a politician, hence keeping the State and our national identity above political degradation." Where on Earth do you get this from? Her Majesty's Parliament, and by extension the notion of parliamentary democracy, is an important 'national symbol' of ours. Last time I checked, that was chock-full of, erm, politicians, half of whom are elected. How, exactly, does the Queen ensure that she keeps Parliament "above political degredation"? Also, she only has the ceremonial right to appoint and dismiss the government, and to dissolve Parliament: she cannot do this independently of anybody else; she can _only_ do so at the behest of the Prime Minister. more
