firstly, all I want to do is try and open some open minded peoples eyes here. People are free to believe what they want and religion can work for both good and bad (support for some, cause of many suicide bombers). The bible Is quite hypocritical (and rather sexist if you ask me) , there are so many obvious examples. we are all created equal BUT homosexuals are an abomination, will be sent to hell and should not be allowed the same rights as straight people e.g. marriage- ( please don't tell me it's because they cannot reproduce because there's nothing against the marriage of infertile people). God is apparently the created us, therefore creating gays, and it's not exactly like homosexuals wake up one day and go "hmmm...today i think i might be gay for the rest of my life"-it's something they are born with...is that Gods way of condemning people? We are all god's children.....so why is jesus so special- surely all men on this planet are also God's sons. the bible also says that selling your daughter as a sex slave is acceptable (Exodus 21:7-11 NLT)? but you can't sell your SON as a sex slave can you? Doesn't seem too equal to me, and seems like selling anyone as a sex slave contradicts some adultery commandments (uh-oh). God is referred to as HE- this is an obvious example of sexism not only is god male but so is jesus and his disciples. God apparently created us in his own image, if god is male, then we should all look like men, either that or god is both female and male, or maybe (I don't see why not) God has a sexuality of his own. After that whole Danish cartoon strip thing went awry, I begin to wonder, exactly Who said - 'Don't EVER draw the Prophet Muhammed!!' ?? I have not read the Koran, but I'm pretty sure there is no passage that says, 'don't draw me'. True enough, if ANYBODY is drawn in a disrespectful way, the people who have affection for that person will naturally be upset. But, isn't Jesus ALSO considered a prophet by the teachings of Islam??? And isn't he ALWAYS depicted in some fashion, sometimes not very kindly?? Why is there no ranting and raving when THAT happens?? I mean a prophet is a prophet, right?? It would seem to me that this is yet another 'accepted misapplication' of vague and unfounded principles. If the Prophet Muhammed was alive today, I highly doubt he would understand or approve of how people have made him out to be some untouchable man-deity like figure. Ofcourse the actual teachings of Islam teach that Allah is God, but the ACTIONS of the people show that they consider Muhammed to be on an equal plane as God. Sunnis and Shia kill each other over who his 'succesor' should be - But shouldn't God's will to keep peace take precedence, is that not MORE important??? How could a man go from being a Camel caravan manager, to a 'untouchable' holy figure that is so divine that he can't even be depicted on paper??!?? True enough, Jesus also had humble beginnings, but the Bible does not say 'thou shalt not depict thy Lord' either. And any depiction will remain just that, a 'depiction', because no one knows exactly what he looked like anyway, and what is more important is WHAT he did, not HOW he looked when he did it. I see many 'depictions' of Jesus that as a Christian, I don't like. But Jesus knows what he looks like, just as I know what I look like. His "realism" and caution now are of a kind with his initial reaction to Russia's invasion of Georgia last summer, when he urged both the invader and the invaded to exercise restraint. President Obama is a "realist," unwilling to impinge on our national interests or the established international rules of state sovereignty, even when those interests and rules crush the hopes of others striving to gain by peaceful means what we have long enjoyed. Open Question: How do I handle an overly- assertive housemate?

I am in my mid-twenties and moved out of my parents' house about a month ago. I'm living with a girl I've known from college for several years. We aren't close friends, but we know each other better than the average acquaintance. We really haven't had time to adjust to one another b/c the whole past month she's been working another job in another city (this only happens during the summer). When moving in, I made her aware of all of the furniture I was bringing. (She had lived in an apartment before, so the majority of the house has been furnished by her.) I have a bookcase/hutch piece that would normally go in my bedroom, but since my bedroom is too small, I have placed it at another spot in the house in the hallway. It doesn't fit perfectly, but it doesn't interrupt with any of her furniture, nor with the flow of traffic in the house. I told her ahead of time where I was planning on putting it, and she was neutral. However, when she came home yesterday, she told me she wanted me to move it because it didn't fit perfectly and that it bothers her being there. She is very assertive, but I felt she was almost being borderline aggressive. I am also assertive, but tend to get flustered when someone acts like this. So, here is my query: 1.) To be "fair", I told her I'd listen to her suggestions on where else this piece should go, but in the end, I don't want to move my piece. I know we have to have compromise, but I don't go around asking her to move her furniture if it bothers me. It's a very heavy, old piece of furniture that has a lot of fragiles displayed and if moved anywhere else, I'm afraid it will get bumped with the house traffic. (Our house is very small and there aren't a lot of options of places for it to go. Also, it is painted a different color and if it's put in a room with a lot of different furniture, it starts to look like a hodge-podge of furniture where nothing matches.) Also, since it's not furniture she is using, I really don't see how it affects her. I'm not sure if I'm being petty here, but I feel like I need to put my foot down. It feels ridiculous to react this way, but she is getting pushy. Is this an appropriate response from me? What else could I do? Is it appropriate for her to make this call? 2.) Open Question: Lost my half share after a reverse split? Help!?

I owned 250 shares of AIG and they performed a 1-20 reverse split, which would have turned the number of shares I have to 12.5. Etrade only gave me 12 shares so I lost my .5 share, which equaled 10 shares. I figure they can't give you a half-share, but I thought if anything they would round up or at least make it a complete share. Instead, they took the half share away so essentially I lose out on it. Can anyone explain more about what happens to half shares after a reverse stock split? more

Open Question: Crazy tenant goes nuts, does damage ...but moves out voluntarily?

I had a room in my home that I rented under a 6 month lease to a 30 year old man with his mother as a co-signor. He paid 700.00 in rent each month plus an equal share of the utilities and had a 600.00 deposit. The tenant paid rent on July 1st, 2009 and at 3am on July 3rd, 2009, he flipped out on alcohol breaking dishes and kicking the walls in his rented room. The police were called and beat on his door but he played possum and did not respond...so they left. Today, I confronted his mother on the phone and him in person and told them both that he needed to move out immediately as we were afraid of him. They resisted it initially but after several minutes of reasoning they both agreed and he packed up his belongings and left. Everything was fine until he had everything packed into his mother's car. Then he started swearing at me and my wife and threatening us physically. It ended with him refusing to return the keys because he wanted his rent and deposit refunded. I calmly pointed out that his violating the terms of the lease and voluntarily leaving, although at my verbal request, occured as a result of his own behavior and that I would not suffer the loss of rent as a result of his deliberate and wrongful behavior. I pointed out that we still have a lease in place and I am entitled to collect rent until I find another tenant. As he was not evicted, but left of his own accord...I feel I have no obligation to refund his rent or account for his deposit until I: I find a tenant to take his place. Make the necessary repairs to the room and have a invoice for him for the damages Invoice him for the outstanding utilities. He left amid a storm of cursing and threats...but they did eventually leave. In an effort to mitigate my damages, I have run another ad online and solicited ten people posting in search of a rental room on Craigslist which is where I find tenants...and how I found him. The room is empty and he still posseses the keys. I will change the locks tomorrow and the costs for that will also be part of his final statement. I did not force him to drink, do damage and act in a threatening and scary manner...so I feel that I should not suffer the 700.00 rental loss. He left without any legal notices so he did so voluntarily after being told that I would not be refunding any rent until I had a new tenant in place...and then only if it happened prior to the end of July...in the correct, pro-rated amount. My handyman has given an estimate of 400.00 to repair and paint the room and the private bathroom and to repair a door frame he broke while drunk. The locks will cost an additional 100.00 (45.00 for the hardware and 55.00 for labor). His share of the utilities are usually 110.00/month...so I am already at 610.00 on a deposit of 600.00. I have told him to be patient and that as soon as I rent the room...he will get a pro-rated portion of the rent back provided I can get another tenant before the 1st of August. I also advised him that should the room not rent out, he and his mother would be responsible for the August rent as it is the final month left on the 6 month lease. I intend to detail all of this in a statement and to provide him with the receipts and/or a handyman invoice within 14 days as required under California law if he will provide me with an address to send the statement to. He is currently refusing to give me a new address and now calls continuously threatening legal action. While I am aware that anyone can sue for any reason...I want to know if I am doing anything improper? Please advise more

Open Question: To all those who promote tolerance and respect for all beliefs?

I have noticed a disturbing trend on this website and in society in general recently. Some people are saying that we should all "tolerate" all beliefs. They say that we should "respect" the beliefs of others. I'm all for that. Most of the time. But before we just throw out a blanket idea like that, maybe we should look a little closer at the ideas which we are asking everyone to have "respect" or "tolerance" for. Before I endorse something, or even tolerate it, much less respect it, I want to understand it and evaluate it in order to see if that particular proposition DESERVES my tolerance, respect, or endorsement. Now these are different words with different meanings. I can tolerate people cheating on their spouse. It doesn't harm me. Who cares, right? Do I respect someone who does that? No, I do not. Do I endorse that type of behavior or want to be associated with the people who do it? Hell no. Let's take these religious ideas which we are supposed to respect or have tolerance for and evaluate whether or not those ideas warrant our respect or tolerance. Right off the bat, I can say that I do not endorse religion or have any respect for it or its adherents. I don't feel that it deserves any respect for many reasons which I won't go into. Let's evaluate whether or not we should tolerate it. How many people have been murdered in the name of some imaginary god? I'd say billions with more dying every single day. How many times have religious people tried to pass laws which discriminate against someone or deny rights or equal protection to someone? They still do this every single day. How many times have religious people tried to force our children to believe in their gods through indoctrination in public schools? Again, they do it all the time. I find these things unacceptable. I simply cannot respect or endorse them. In fact, I cannot even tolerate them. If I do tolerate these situations, then what makes anyone think that they will ever change? If I allow these people to do whatever they want to do to me and everyone else without a challenge, what is to stop them from continuing to engage in the same behaviors indefinitely? There has always been injustice in the world. But whenever and wherever that injustice was fought against or overcome, it was always fought by those of us who would had no tolerance for intolerable propositions. Tyranny was always overturned by those of us who would show no respect for treatment which deserved none. Cruelty, discrimination, and bigotry were always put to an end by those of us who had no acceptance of unacceptable actions or treatment. I hold no reverence for religious ideas, rules, or beliefs. They deserve none. I will have no tolerance for them and no respect for those who hold them. I will never, as long as I draw breath, allow the injustices committed against the human race by the followers of religion to go unchallenged. I have been involved with my current boyfriend of six months for almost two years. I have never been interested in another boy since. But since I don't have much experience or example I go off of what I know. I am very smart. But lately it seems like all my boyfriend does is disappoint me. So my ex husband and father of my two oldest children just recently remarried. Which is great I'm happy for him for the most part his wife and I get along great. Our son moved in with them about a year ago. He had some issues dealing with the fact his dad and I split up (he was 1 at the time and doesn't even remember us being together he's 8 now), and asked to live there. Everything was fine for a while we came up with a way for both of us to see the kids and spend equal time with them until about 2 months ago. Around Mother's day and a month before they were married his wife started to cross boundaries that I don't agree with. Mother's day was my weekend as it should have been, and she had asked if the kids could spend the night before at their house because her father was coming to town and wanted to meet the kids, but he was only going to be in town for a few hours. I agreed on the condition that she promised to bring me the kids first thing in the morning. Needless to say she didn't she kept them until around 3 pm and refused to answer their phone all day. I would never in my life imagine doing that to their father on fathers day. My own family will call her and make plans for my kids with her as if I'm not their mother, and have no say. Which she seems to think is just fine. One day she decided to call me while I was at work and leave me a voicemail rambling on about I'm not sure what to end the call with basically claiming she was a better mother to my children than I am. Before I start explaining things, I would just like to say that this thread is for the people (anyone) who wonders about how your culture and a strong indentity can help you in REAL life. Okay, alot of people on this forum have been asking me how does a strong culture benefit you? My answer is that, Culture equals someones value, class, and knowledge in todays world... When you have these things, you start to create a identity and the more you go forward and progress in learning about your culture/history, the stronger your identity becomes.... But you need to keep your identity alive amongst yourself. Being a self-hating idiot (You know who you are ) will not help you in real life, infact, it will make you look like a weak pathetic loser. Now having an identity will infact help you emmensly.... like it will push you to do or achieve things that you never thought you could. Your culture and identity can also help you avoid the crappy/negative influence in todays world (especially if you live in America)... Okay, this is SO hard to explain so excuse me if I don't make sense. What is that thing where you can either send your picture some where or go to a store and get it done and they blow it up into a big poster and it's all neon-ish? I think you can either get just one single picture or you can get for equal squares of your picture and each one has different colors on it, but it's still on one poster. You know what I'm talking about? My friend went to a store and gave them a picture of her dog and they made it into a poster and it's the picture but in neon colors. Resolved Question: Do you believe in separating public/professional lives from private/personal lives...?

Do you believe the separation of these two tends to result in seemingly 'conflicting' beliefs for many people? Example: Someone who publicly/professionally is very 'modern', but in their private/personal lives is very 'traditional'. I'm thinking more specifically of the argument that many women want to be seen as equals publicly/professionally, yet they expect a man to make the 'first move', pay for dates, etc. Or, a man who is very 'modern' minded as far as gender equality goes, yet wants a 'traditional' marriage to a woman who will be a stay at home wife and Mother to their child/ren. Do you see that as a conflict in beliefs? I do. Gods do not exist, but if they did, wouldn't it sukk to be god? Think about it. He knows everything that will ever happen until the end of time itself. No surprises or uncertainty. No peers to keep him company. He has no equals which he could have an intelligent conversation with. What would be the point of talking about anything anyway? He already knows everything. Open Question: With some embarrassment, I do not understand this. Equinox question?

I have seen explanations for why the length of day and night are not equal on the equinox, depending on your latitude. I have seen things related to refraction, etc., but at dawn, the terminator should run right along a certain longitude line from north pole to south. (I would think). There isn't any more or less refraction at high latitudes than there is at the equator. The sun rises and sets more *slowly* at higher latitudes, but this has nothing to do with when it first appears. I can see how altitude would make a difference but not latitude. So somebody please explain this to me. Why are the equal day and night hours not on the equinox at higher latitudes? (Blush) Also, would this still be true if we measured from the center of the sun instead of the edges?No, Dr. Bob, as always, you are right on the mark. This principle would be at its extremes at the poles, where on the equinox, the sun rides around the horizon, half above and half below. Technically that's 24 hours of daylight! And it's funny. I already knew that but didn't put 1 and 1 together. I do understand that a day would beIgnore that previous line. hello i was just wondering what a 275/70/18 would be in inches? for example 31/12.5/18 (thats almost 100% wrong thats why im asking) and if anyone can answer that would u also be able to tell me what a 31, 33, and 35 would be in the (275/70/18 form)? Im trying to figure this out to see what size i can fit on my 1500 4x4 ram (2008) before i put a 2.5 inch lvling kit on it and if someone can tell me what the 275/70/18 equals in the inches way so i can kinda picture it in my head on about how big they'd be and have an idea so i dont look like a total idiot at the tire shop. please and ty! i will be downsizing from 20" stock rims to 18x8.5 or 18x9 rims so if u could make sure the converted size is correctly converted to fit an 18" rim that would be great more
