Open Question: ENGLISH PAPER HELP!!?

PLEASE TELL ME HOW THIS CAN BE BETTER AND STRONGER/CONVINCING ALSO WHAT CAN MAKE IT EXCEPTIONAL... MY TEACHER SAID IT NEEDS A "KICKER"...? Courtship By: Shaun Ranade Our minds evolved not only as survival machines, but as courtship masters. Every single one of our ancestors has been able to live for a while but also convince at least one partner to produce offspring. Darwin realized that natural selection was of equal importance as sexual selection because females often preferred to mate with males with external ornaments or exaggerated features of morphology. The human mind and the peacock’s tail have similar biological functions. The peacock's tail evolved because peahens preferred larger, more colorful tails. Peacocks would survive better with shorter, lighter, drabber tails but, the sexual choices of peahens have made peacocks evolve big, bright plumage that takes energy to grow and time to preen, and makes it harder to escape from predation. The tail makes no sense as an adaptation for survival, but it makes perfect sense as an adaptation for courtship. Similarly, the evolution of the human mind has brought prolificacy to art, morality, language, and creativity. Both the human mind and peacock tail have evolved to be used as courtship tools to attract potential partners. Another majestic bird whose courting rituals are similar to humans is the Crane. Said to live one thousand years, it is often used in Japanese cultural ceremonies such as marriage. Cranes dance to reinforce pair bonds, to release tension, and sometimes simply for pleasure. During typical Crane courtship there is a dancing ceremony where they prance stiff-legged around each other, alternately bowing with their wings extended out showing off their plumage. Then they leap high in air with their legs dangling underneath them and finally they perform a duet in unison solidifying their bond. Once a firm pair bond has been established Cranes usually remain mated for life, although they will replace a mate that has died or not met expectations. With humans ccourtship is the period before engagement or marriage. During courtship couples get to know each other by sending each other flowers, songs, gifts and things that constitute wooing. Courtship also decides if there will be a firm bond. Just like Cranes humans remain mated for life, although they will replace a mate that has died or not met expectations. After studying different animals and researching courtship I’ve concluded that human courtship is much more complex than a simple dance or the preening of plumage. Unlike other animals our bodies have not adapted as dramatically to each other’s desires. But, this is not to say that our minds have not changed, they have because our aesthetic desires have increased. Men have subjected women to unusual systems such as rib cracking corsets and crippling foot bindings. Today it is in fashion for women to look waif and emaciated. It is amazing how different living beings choose their mates based on their dancing, their flamboyant plumage, or body appearance. Aesthetics dominate sexual selection when truly it should be a personality and not outward appearances.  more

Voting Question: Why do I feel so antagonized by guys who are party animals?

I've met young men who are blatant party animals, and they exaggerate their exploits to the nth degree. Partying suddenly becomes a way to measure one's social rank, to prove to everyone that you are unquestionably part of the "in crowd". Partying is a sport to some guys, it seems. It becomes a competition about who can party the hardest, the longest, and still cope with a bloody hangover the day after. Competition and pride are the only reasons why I think men become party animals. It's as if there's an unspoken suggestion that if a man can't party hard like the rest of the guys, he is not a man. He is sub-par, he'll never relate to the 'big boys', he's an outcast. I think that's pathetic. It doesn't help that beer commercials target young men with the image that having a beer with your buddies is the only way men can relate to each other as equals. The thing is, partying doesn't 'make a man'. The media did a great job instilling this belief on young men with frail egos. Do men think a partying lifestyle is attractive to women? I am quite disgusted by it, actually. It just reflects recklessness, irresponsibility, and ego-boosting competition. The sad thing is that some men never grow out of it. Every time I meet a party animal guy, I have the tendency to run FAR FAR AWAY. Your thoughts?  more

Resolved Question: Can somebody please revise my essay?

I know it is very long, but I would REALLY appreciate it if you could read it over and tell me if there are any grammatical mistakes/errors. Thanks!!! :D 1. The opening book of T.H. White’s The Once and Future King, titled The Sword in the Stone, illustrates Arthur’s captivating adventures and his growth from an innocent boy into an illustrious leader. All through the novel, the reader is enthralled in Arthur’s treacherous adventures, his hardships and challenges, and his notable accomplishments. An extensive portion of the novel is based on Arthur’s intimate relationship with his tutor and friend, Merlyn. Throughout the novel, it is understood that Merlyn believed a child should learn solely through experience, and thus approved of Arthur's transformations into different animals; through these unusual events Arthur could explore and learn. Arthur’s experiences with the various animals he transformed into taught him both mental and physical skills, the idea that knowledge is power, and his main belief that that “might makes right.” 2.The Once and Future King highlights Arthur’s daring escapades from the time he encountered Merlyn, to the time Arthur became the legendary King of England. From the beginning of the novel, Merlyn presents Arthur with an abundant amount of quests. Arthur’s fourth quest consisted of transforming into a goose to fully understand how geese lived in comparison to other animals. When Arthur was transformed into a goose, he immediately befriended Lyo-lyok, his mentor and companion throughout his adventure. Through Lyo-lyok, Arthur learned of their traditions, migratory rituals, and their society as a whole. Arthur’s view on the way the geese lived as a culture astounded him as he learned that their instincts led them to a peaceful, humane society where everyone benefited from individualism. They were not governed by laws or leader, except when they came about spontaneously (White, 173), and Arthur was taught that the geese did not fight against their own kind. Overall, Arthur’s acquired knowledge from migrating with the geese taught him that they had a purpose in life, they only fought against natural predators, and that they were an amicable group of animals. 3.Because Merlyn is portrayed as an insightful magician, he instinctively knows what is best for Arthur’s wellbeing as an individual. Merlyn’s adventures allowed Arthur to experience different lifestyles so that in the future, Arthur becomes the infallible, compassionate king he turned out to be. Because the geese were such good-natured, genial creatures, Arthur learned to be patient and cordial, which led to his desire to create the Round Table. Arthur’s longing to generate the Round Table, which represented justice, righteousness, and reason, inevitably became one of his greatest accomplishments. With hundreds of dedicated knights seated in a circle, they all represented equal individuals. Rather than being a belligerent group of knights, their main focus was doing good for those in need of help. These ideas, along with “might over right”, all originated from Arthur’s encounter with Lyo-lyok and the group of geese. If it weren’t for Lyo-lyok’s speech on how there are no boundaries on earth (White, 172), Arthur’s reign as king would have been focused on “right over might” and he would have participated in more battles and wars. 4.Arthur learned through each of his transformations that knowledge is power. The geese exercised their power through different methods by teaching Arthur to give great thought in making decisions related to specific problems and endeavors. Throughout the first book of The Once and Future King, Arthur learned from the geese that boundaries between territories do not exist. This allowed him to construct the idea of the Round Table and to create peace throughout the different regions of England, successfully creating a civilized country. In general, Arthur primarily learns that he is successful at interpreting Merlyn's morals and principles into a system of power and authority. 5.From Arthur’s experiences with the tyrannical fish, the aggressive hawks, the hostile ants, the tranquil geese, and the shrewd badger, he learns that might equals right and that he should reign with complete integrity and honor. White’s novel carefully portrays the assorted adventures Merlyn designates Arthur throughout The Once and Future King. Although Arthur gained a great degree of knowledge from each of his various expeditions, it is depicted throughout the novel that Arthur’s adventure with the geese benefited his role as king in many, diverse ways.  more

Resolved Question: Did you know anything about SUN Meditation? ?

Sun Meditation To practice sun meditation, beginners should start by looking at the rising sun early in the morning. You can also look at the setting sun, but it is not as effective as at sunrise because the energy is decreasing. If you feel any trouble gazing directly at the sun, you should focus your gaze a short distance above the sun. Try not to blink, but if you feel discomfort, blink several times, then start again. If you do this three of four times, your resistance power will be increased and it will be easy to look at the sun. Then, we can gradually increase the time that we gaze at the sun. Beginners should start looking each day for a short period, then day by day increase the amount of time so that the eyes can gradually adapt without any harm. It is very important to maintain regular practice, as it will allow your eyes to adapt properly. Some people may experience problems in the first few days, sometimes headaches or burning sensations in the eyes, or a 'sunspot' that affects your vision. This is quite normal, and the only way to overcome these problems is to continue practising. It is similar to any physical exertion that may cause stiffness or pain; it does not last long, and it is best removed by continuing the exercise. When you can continue staring at the sun for ten minutes, the sun will seem to disappear. The inside of the sun will appear as blue sky surrounded by a ring of light, it will sometimes appear as two suns, sometimes rotating clockwise or anticlockwise. As your concentration develops and you can gaze at the sun for longer, you will be able to see a 'black spot' in the middle of the sun. Sometimes this black spot will be bigger, at other times smaller. After practice, the black spot will remained fixed in one place. Suddenly, from this black hole, seven colours will emerge and move around the sun, sometimes clockwise, sometimes anti-clockwise. As your concentration increases, a powerful beam of light will come from the sun towards your body. In the beginning this beam of light will not touch the body, it will come towards you and then retreat back to the sun. Eventually, as your concentration improves, this light will touch your body and you will attain complete thoughtless condition. This is the start of the pratyaharam stage, and indicates the beginning of Sunyoga experience. After being touched by this light, a vibration will start from the heart, allowing us to control three negativities; shame, hatred and fear. With regular practice this vibration will increase and you will be able to gain control over four more negativities; anger, greed, narrow attraction, ego & jealousy. As the vibration increases you will be able to control sexual desire and lust. At this point, the pratyaharam stage is complete. The next step, as the inner vibration increases and extends from the muladhara chakra at the base of the spine to the sahasradhara chakra at the top of the head, the sadhak will experience sahaja samadhi during which he will be able to see a bright light, inside of which there will be a beautiful structure. This is the atmadarsanam stage, the 'who am I' stage, the sadaguru stage, the mukha stage. At that time the sadhak will feel, 'I know him but i have never seen' because it has always been within... our sagunabramha structure. This marks the completion of the dhyana stage. As the inner vibration develops, we'll discover that there are two more chakras, one above the head called the ultra chakra and one below the head called the ultra balance chakra. At this point, we will be able to hear a sound, which some people call AUM, others have called AMEN, while others have called it ALAM. This is the dharana stage. At this point we can receive divine messages from the universe. The final stage is nirvikalpa samadhi, at which point a further two chakras are discovered, one above the ultra chakra called the cosmos chakra, and one below the ultra balance chakra called the cosmos balance chakra. Our mental force will be more than gravitational force, our soul will leave the body and unite with the supreme soul. The Thirteen Stages of Sunyoga: 1. Conquer all material desires (sexuality, anger, greed, narrow-mindedness, ego & jealousy, shame, hatred and fear) 2. Develop Divine Energy 3. Atma Darsanam - Discovery of Atma (or soul) 4. Samadhi - Enlightenment 5. Conquer hunger 6. Conquer thirst 7. Conquer diseases 8. Paramahansa - Adjusting the mind to all situations 9. Having no enemies - all enemies will be friends (including animals) 10. Longetivity (this happens when the body's vibration becomes the same as the environment's) 11. The body's vibration and earth's vibration will be equal 12. The body's vibration and sun's vibration will be equal 13. The body's vibration and the vibration of the Universe (Supreme Soul) vibration will be equal. i am doing sun meditation from 5 days and i feel great peace of mind and a power inside me now i see two suns revolving anti clockwise i give this information so you can also get benefit from this great meditation. did you like this pic of sun in my box? i love sun what are your views on this pic you like it or not there are some morons who are saying they will got blind stupids first read the full mattar than type something a person will got blind only if he will gaze during noon time 1 hour after sun rise and 1 hour before sun set will never harm the eyes  more

Resolved Question: Interesting Theological Argument?

I received an email from one of my friends today. We were debating whether or not homosexuality is a sin. He says it is (he's straight) and I say it's not (I'm gay, but closeted), and the message read as follows: "Modern Society has made our word into a sinful place. People like you who say that its none of our buisness make it all the worse. People are told nowadays how they have the right to whatever they want, but not told what is wrong. As a result there is a growing consesus of what is right is what you want and would want others to have because of imagining yourself in their positon, but the fact is that without God and greater meaning (which are connected) the world makes no sense to exist at all, and our lives are meaningless, and morality would not matter. As an atheist you look at the world materialisticly. You have really been pissing me off a LOT lately! I already said that i do not deny it being genetic, the fact of it is not a sin, the act of it is, just like everyone else has different temptations. We are not all prone to exactly the same urges, thats what makes individual, but there are some things that are not logical to nature, such as homosexuality, which makes those things unatural, in other words mutations or diseases. How someones mind works does not change the defiition of sin. If you knew God and how to look and think beyond what you physically witness, you would know this. In nature it would take away the speacies ability to reproduce, thus defining that something is wrong with that individual. You are atheist. You do not believe in the human soul; this means that in your eyes we are nothing more than animals who happen to be smarter than the others. With this angle of looking at the issue, it is still a disease, not something that can be prevented perhaps from occuring, but something that should be kept in check for the good of the human 'speacies.' You are not in a postion to determine what sin is or is not, if you truly do not believe in God, then it is not possible for you to believe in sin at all, or the lack of it, because your (non)faith is purely widely accepted science." I wrote him back, saying: "What you don't realize is that I was a VERY devout Catholic for my entire life, up until a few years ago. Then, so much shit started happening and I prayed long and hard about it, and the answers that I got were to search and find what I believe to be the truth. I found it. I read the entire Bible and prayed over it and this is what I found. And one thing--if you can't deny that it's genetic and a sin, why would it be wrong to be the way God made people? If you think it should be illegal and you think it's a disease, should people with cancer be illegal too? No. If people are people, all people should be subject to receive equal human rights. I don't know if you know it, but gays cannot receive more than 1200 rights that heterosexuals can solely because gay marriage is banned. That's just because of that--there are tens of thousands more rights, many financially and medically. I just honestly don't see how people can persecute others in the name of God, which is SUPPOSED to be peaceful and accepting and loving of all. Because that's what it is. Persecution. They're taxpaying citizens, therefore they should be allowed the same rights as everyone else. That's why I'm not going to get married to a woman until every citizen in this country can legally get married, regardless of sexual orientation. Marriage is supposed to be a sign of love between two consenting adults. Procreation is not required for marriage. My grandmother's sister is 82 and got married about 10 years ago to her current (2nd) husband, after her first husband died in the 1970s. She's never had kids, and neither has he, so does that mean that her marriage is worthless? What about my uncle and my aunt? He's sterile because of a childhood accident, and even if he wasn't she has a nasty genetic condition that she would almost certainly pass along." What do you think about this? Who do you think was in the right? Why? Please list supporting arguments for your assertion. Thanks in advance! HE wrote the first one (the fire and brimstone). I wrote the second one.  more

Resolved Question: Who Exclaimed these Quotes from Animal Farm?

Quote 9: "No one believes more firmly than Comrade Napoleon that all animals are equal. He would be only too happy to let you make your decisions for yourselves. But sometimes you might make the wrong decisions, comrades, and then where should we be?" Chapter 5, pp. 47-8 Quote 10: "Napoleon is always right." Chapter 5, pg. 48 Quote 11: "All that year the animals worked like slaves. But they were happy in their work; they grudged no effort or sacrifice, well aware that everything they did was for the benefit of themselves and those of their kind who would come after them, and not for a pack of idle, thieving human beings." Chapter 6, pg. 51 Quote 12: "The human beings did not hate Animal Farm any less now that it was prospering; indeed, they hated it more than ever." Chapter 6, pg. 56 Quote 13: "They were always cold, and usually hungry as well." Chapter 7, pp. 62-3 Quote 14: "If a window was broken or a drain was blocked up, someone was certain to say that Snowball had come in the night and done it, and when the key of the store-shed was lost, the whole farm was convinced that Snowball had thrown it down the well. Curiously enough, they went on believing this even after the mislaid key was found under a sack of meal." Chapter 7, pg. 66 Quote 15: "If she herself had had any picture of the future, it had been of a society of animals set free from hunger and the whip, all equal, each working according to his capacity, the strong protecting the weak... Instead - she did not know why - they had come to a time when no one dared speak his mind, when fierce, growling dogs roamed everywhere, and when you had to watch your comrades torn to pieces after confessing to shocking crimes." Chapter 7, pp. 73-4 Quote 16: "[S]ome of the animals remembered - or thought they remembered - that the Sixth Commandment decreed 'No animal shall kill any other animal.' And though no one cared to mention it in the hearing of the pigs or the dogs, it was felt that the killings which had taken place did not square with this." Chapter 8, pg. 76  more

Resolved Question: A new Noah's Ark, is it such a good idea?

In the year 2007 the Lord came unto Noah, who was now living in England and said, "Once again, the earth has become wicked and over-populated and I see the end of all flesh before me. Build another Ark and save two of every living thing along with a few good humans." He gave Noah the CAD drawings, saying, "You have 6 months to build the Ark before I will start the unending rain for 40 days and 40 nights." Six months later, the Lord looked down and saw Noah weeping in his yard- but no Ark. "Noah!" He roared, "I'm about to start the rain! Where is the Ark ?" "Forgive me, Lord," begged Noah, "but things have changed. I needed Building Regulations Approval and I've been arguing with the Fire Brigade about the need for a sprinkler system. My neighbours claim that I should have obtained planning permission for building the Ark in my garden because it is development of the site, even though in my view it is a temporary structure. We had to then go to appeal to the Secretary of State for a decision. Then the Department of Transport demanded a bond be posted for the future costs of moving power lines and other overhead obstructions to clear the passage for the Ark 's move to the sea. I told them that the sea would be coming to us, but they would hear nothing of it. Getting the wood was another problem. All the decent trees have Tree Preservation Orders on them and we live in a Site of Special Scientific Interest set up in order to protect the spotted owl. I tried to convince the environmentalists that I needed the wood to save the owls - but no go! When I started gathering the animals, the RSPCA sued me. They insisted that I was confining wild animals against their will. They argued the accommodation was too restrictive, and it was cruel and inhumane to put so many animals in a confined space. Then the County Council, the Environment Agency and the Rivers Authority ruled that I couldn't build the Ark until they'd conducted an environmental impact study on your proposed flood. I'm still trying to resolve a complaint with the Equal Opportunities Commission on how many disabled carpenter's I'm supposed to hire for my building team. The trades unions say I can't use my sons. They insist I have to hire only accredited workers with Ark-building experience. To make matters worse, Customs and Excise seized all my assets, claiming I'm trying to leave the country illegally with endangered species. So, forgive me, Lord, but it would take at least 10 years for me to finish this Ark. " Suddenly the skies cleared, the sun began to shine, and a rainbow stretched across the sky. Noah looked up in wonder and asked, "You mean you're not going to destroy the world?" "No," said the Lord. "The British government beat me to it."  more

Resolved Question: To some vegans/vegetarians - when concerning animal rights - they believe humans and other animals are equal?

Doesn't anybody realize that this is a dangerous path to tread down - bordering on eugenics. Should we practice selective beading on humans? Should we sterilize "genetically inferior" humans like we did in the US? Only until the 70s was this policy terminated. Should we hunt other humans for food? mango tree: But these same animals are themselves hunted by other predators everyday, why can't we contribute to the food chain ourselves?  more

Resolved Question: stupid/ ignorant views on Islam?

i've been reading some questions and answers on here about people's views on Islam and i was so shocked by what some people are saying! if you dont know the facts then why do you feel the need to spread hate?? just to clear up some issues: - Islam teaches Muslims to respect other religions and learn about them. - True Muslims do not think that 9/ 11 was an inside job. they believe that the terrorists who committed that crime and killed thousands of innocent people will be punished by God. - people of other religions are welcomed into mosques and any Muslim who does not allow them is wrong. i myself have been inside a mosque and was welcomed by everyone there. - Muslims do not consider terrorists as "Freedom Fighters", but as ignorant, mentally vhallenged people who are extremists and these kinds of people are not welcome in Islam. - when an animal is slaughtered, it is in the fastest way possible- via the jusgular vein, so that the animal dies instantly, and in real halal slaughter houses, no animal ever sees another animal die. - both men and women are equal in Islam the Quran refers to Christians and Jews as: "People of the Book", this means that Islam believes that the original message of Christianity and Judaism is the same to the message of Islam. - Jesus and Moses are very respectable prophets in Islam - no true Muslim must EVER force anyone else to convert/ revert to islam- this is wrong and this takes away a persons free will. finally, i would just like to say that most people these days get religion confused with culture, so when you hear about Muslim terrorists hiding out in Afghanistan, it is actually just Afghanistan terrorists. people who cause misery in other's lives are punished. my question is: now that you know these facts, what do you think of Islam, compared to what you used to think? i used to be very narrow- minded too, but after a neighbour converted to Islam, i thought that i should look into the religion and realised that it is very similar to Judaism and Christianity in most ways. no racist comments. by the way, the Shariah law has been changed dramatically over the years, so now some of it is based on culture and it is not the same to the original shariah law which was made hundreds of years ago. and i wa shoccked because i did not realise that in this day and age, people are still so uninformed about other religions and that people were so ignorant. if you dont know something about a religion, why spread hate about it when you are not even sure about the facts? why not find out about it?  more

Resolved Question: What are the benefits of coconut oil and virgin coconut oil? ?

Hi! I'm Racquel. BSE student. These are some of the information in my research. Read the facts below to discover why the Coconut Oil is now referred to as the "Healthiest Oil in the World" because of its unique health- giving properties. Studies demonstrate that of all fats and oils, coconut oil is not only nutritious, but has the most health benefits. FACT No.1: Coconut oil is the best and richest natural source of the immune-boosting lauric acid among all the vegetable oils. Among the vegetable oils traded in the world, coconut oil is the best and richest natural source of lauric acid which makes up about 50 percent of its healthy fat content. All other vegetable oils are completely deficient in this. Lauric Acid, an important component of breast milkis also the primary saturated fatty acid found in coconut oil. Lauric Acid is the most important essential fatty acid in building and maintaining the body's immune system and has a powerful antimicrobial effect that can kill a wide variety of infectious organisms. Among the saturated fatty acids, lauric acid has the maximum anti-viral activity. Lauric acid is a medium chain fatty acid (MCFA), which has the additional beneficial function of being formed into monolaurin in the body. Monolaurin is the anti-viral, antibacterial and anti- protozoal monogllyceride used by humans or animals to destroy lipid coated viruses, such as HIV, herpes, influenza and pathogenic bacteria. FACT No.2: Coconut oil is rich in plant-based, healthy type of good saturated fats which is very different from the animal-based saturated fats. Coconut oil has no cholesterol. Coconut oil is rich in plant-based, healthy type of saturated fats. It is 92 percent highly saturatedfat. Not all saturated fats are created equal. Just like polyunsaturated fats which are sub classified into omega 3, omega 6 and omega 9, saturated fats are also sub-classified into short chain, medium chain and long chain. The dramatic differnce is with the fatty acid composition and is fully documented by years of scientific research. In contrast with animal fats (long chain fatty acids-LCFA) which contain cholesterol, coconut oil, which is from the plant-based source has no cholesterol. The fatty acids of coconut oil (medium chain fatty acids-MCFA) are easily assimilated - they are not stored in tha body like animal fats. There are good fats and bad fats. Our diet needs to include the good tyoe of fats such as the saturated fats from coconut oil as they play an important role in our body chemistry. Sixty percent (60%) to eighty percent (80%) of our brain tissue and our nervous system are made of very rich complex of fats. we can live without the bad fats from red meat or animals, but good fats, such as the fats from plant-based coconut oil and fats from fishes like salmon and sardines are essentilaal for good health. We dont necessarily need a low fat diet. we need a good fat diet. Goods saturated fats, such as from the plant-based coconuts, enhance the immune system. The fats around the heart muscle is highly saturated. The heart draws on this reserve of fat ion times of stress. Saturated fats also protect the liver from toxic effect of alcohol and drugs. Fifty percent (50%) of cell membranes also constitue saturated fatty acids. It gives our cells necessary firmness and integrity. Saturated fats also play a vital role in the health of bones. At least 50 percent of dietary fats need to be saturated for calcium to be effectively incorporated in the skeletal structure. FACT No.3: Coconut oil is composed predominantly of the health- boosting Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA). Coconut Oil is unique. It is unlike most other dietary oils. The secret behind coconut oil is that it is composed predominantly of medium chain fatty acids (MCFA's) or Medium chain triglycerides (MCT). It is the MCFA's which give it its remarkable nutritional and medicinal properties. Coconut oil has the most or largest concentration of MCFA's (64%) compared with the other oils and fats. The majority of the fats in our diet, whether they are saturated or unsaturated comes from the plant or animal, are composed of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA's). Soybean oil, corn oil, canola oil, olive oil lard, and chicen fat as well as most all other fats and oils in our diet, are composed entirely of LCFA's. Some 98 to 100 percent of the fat you eat each day consists of LCFA's. Long chain fats take longer to digest and will tend to to be stored as stubborn fat you can't get rid of . The medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA's) from coconut ol have completely different effect on us than do the long - chain fatty acids that are more commonly found in our food.  more

Voting Question: Reconciling the sin of homosexuality with the Bible?

I've wondered this more as the whole gay marriage thing has unfolded in CA. I understand that the Bible says homosexuality is a sin and that Christians disdain it. However, what about the other things the Bible says? "And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death." -Leviticus 20:10 I mean, it says right here that adultery carries the same punishment (death) as homosexuality. In my mind that means equal sins. But, for the life, of me I can't remember the last time I heard about a protest encouraging the illegalization of adultery. Should a man commit a sin "he shall bring an unblemished head of a she-goat as the offering for his sin... he shall slaughter it..." -Leviticus 4:28-29 Hmm. Again, I cannot remember hearing about the slaughtering of an animal as a form of forgiveness. I'm sure I could go on. I guess my point is that, isn't the Bible an all or nothing thing? I mean, once you start to say "Ok, we'll believe this, but not that" aren't we just taking this scripture and making it say what best fits our lives? I guess that's the simple answer. That most people would rather just pick and pull what fits the way they want to live. But I'm curious to hear from anti-gay marriage people, how do you bridge that gap in your mind. That one thing the Bible says is a no-no and another, equal thing is ok. "There is no escape. "gods" words regarding homosexuality are not debatable. They are clear, and unequivicable. Sorry." I guess I expected this. See, my point is that the Bible says, just as clearly, that cheating on your spouse is a equal sin as engaging in sex with the same gender. So, how can anyone, who believes this, realistically say that one is a sin and the other is not, if they are using the Bible as a guidelines. And I'm not bashing or judging. I've just always wondered what the point of buying into only the pieces of the Bible you want to is.  more

Resolved Question: Evolution is a lie. Why do people believe it?

Evolution is a lie concocted by eco freaks from PETA. If we are monkeys how come monkeys can't talk? Evolution is taught in schools by liberal communists who hate America and American values. It's also racist. Evolution is used to suggest black people and Australoids are more primitive than other races. How can it be true if it's racist? But these ignorant idiots believe whatever they're told to think. They believe that nature is important and there's global warming and animals are precious and have rights because they're told to think that by liberal teachers and the liberal media. All races are equal, all people are equal for that matter, because God made us that way. Evolutionists hate equality and people. Resolved Question: How come evolution changed the way different races of humans developed on the outside but not the inside?

Well i was just thinking about it cos as different races lived in different parts of the world and ate different foods i would have thought our brains would develop differently making some races smarter than others, but all races are of equal intelligence. I thought maybe because we werent apart for long enough but i saw a show that said certain species of animals werent apart for long but one group became more intelligent than the other  more

Resolved Question: An honest and impartial question for Vegetarians/Vegans?

I would simply like to understand the reasoning behind your individual decisions to abstain from meat. I mean I know that the two main reasons are: 1) Animals deserve to live. 2) The process in which they are killed and turned into food is disturbing. But what was the breaking point for you to completely abandon meat? Would a person like me, who fully understands and has witnessed first-hand the slaughter of livestock yet feels no guilt in eating food, be viewed negatively by you? Is it simply a personal choice that you have taken to cut meat out from your diet, or do you advocate having others do the same? Do you consider animals and humans to be equals? Would you have humans tone down their activities and live in harmony with animals? I don't want to sound condescending or patronizing, I am just asking these questions neutrally just to get insight into what your thoughts are on the topic. I am by no means trying to offend anyone. But I mean I can empathize your beliefs and decision, but I find not eating animals to be absurd, and could never do it myself. I try to have a balanced diet, but I don't consider it at all healthy to either eat all animals or all plants. Opinions? But humans and animals are not the same, so why is it that just because they feel pain and can realize danger they are equal to us? I don't understand it. Why should we plow down thousands of acres of forests to grow crops, killing ecosystems in the process? Isn't it a catch-22? Are you against animal population control and hunting?  more

Voting Question: I had to freestyle write for English....does it sound okay or stupid?

We were given a picture and were to write about whatever came to mind...story, whatever. It was a picture of a set of train tracks with a building standing afar. The first thing it made me think of was the Holocaust. This subject really touches my heart and so I thought of it right away. ***************************************** The noisy and rusted train continues to rattle on as these tall buildings creep on closer. As we approach this unknown territory I feel my heart begin to crumble. Feelings of depression, anxiety, anger, sadness, regret. They all go against me like a pack of wild dogs scraping for a piece of meat from a strayed animal. What is to become of us? Will we ever see each other again? Are the people running this place going to treat us fair and equal? These questions ran in circles through my mind. I have to say that we are quite fortunate compared to other families. We were lucky enough to go this long without being caught by the German police. News came back from several of our lifelong friends going into these camps, and so far nothing is said about any of them returning, at least alive. I am scared of what may come next. What will they do to us? I am only thirteen years old and yet to live, and my mother and father have done so much good to have their lives end in such agony and pain. All because we are Jews! Isn't God supposed to watch over His chosen people? Does God even care for us at all? Heck, I don't even know if there is any reason to pray anymore. The back of my mind hopes that there still is a reason to believe. I lost my home, and I lost my freedom. Soon enough I could lose my family, and all thats left is a little pinch of faith. Thank you for the advice in the edit. We did these in class, and had to turn them in or else I would change that part and extend it. Perhaps I will just for fun! Thank you all who gave support.  more

The membrane structure of a cell is what allows certain molecules to be allowed in and out of the cell. The membrane can also be known as the gatekeeper. Certain molecules are so small that it requires no energy to be allowed through of the cell and example of this is water. But other molecules that are larger in size are not immediately allowed through the membrane, the energy that is required is called active transport. Within the cell there are proteins known as transport proteins. The function of these proteins are to allow the movement of water soluble molecules and ions across the cell. Transport proteins combine to a substance and move the molecule across the membrane, each protein is specific for the molecule or substance they are moving. There are different types of transport proteins that move molecules; passive, active, and bulk. Passive transports is known as "passive" because the cell does not have to expand energy to let it happen. Passive transports follow the concentration gradient and require no energy. Osmosis and diffusion are two types of passive transports. Osmosis is the diffusion of water, but not of solutes across a selectively permeable membrane due to concentration differences. Osmosis is the movement of water towards a region of higher solute concentration. Although passive transport works for some molecules it does not work for all. For molecules that are larger in size, an energy known as ATP pumps a molecule across a membrane this process in known as active transport. Active transport occurs when particles are moving from lower concentration to a high concentration against the concentration gradient. In this way, active transport can be distinguished from passive transport as passive transport does not move along a concentration gradient, yet it is instead directly dependant on the permeability of the cell membrane. In a cell there are different types of solution that surround the cell, two internal solutions are solvents and solutes. A solvent is water and solutes are particles dissolved in water. The amount of particles dissolved in water is what categorizes them between isotonic, hypertonic, and hypotonic. An isotonic solution is one that has no change, the solvent goes through the cell walls, using osmosis, with out expanding or shrieking the cell. The amount of dissolved particles remain the same between both cells. To be considered a hypertonic solution, it must cause the cell around it to expand by using osmosis (take in water). Which means that the solute level is higher that the amount of solute in the cell. A solution that surrounds a cell, and causes it to shrink (lose water) , by the process of osmosis, is known as a hypotonic solution. A hypotonic solution has a lower solute level that the amount of the solute in the cell. The difference between animal cell, which have no cell wall, and a plant cell is the interactions between placing them in certain solutions. When a plant cell, a cell with a cell wall, is placed in a hypotonic solution it causes the cell to expand until the pressure against the cell wall equals the pressure of the cytoplasm, causing an equilibrium. For most plants, being placed in a hypotonic solution is the ideal stage. When placed in a hypotonic solution most animal cells with gain water through osmosis and become swell and eventually become lyse. When placed into a hypertonic solution, both plant and animal cells shrink and consequently at this state, plant cells become lethal.  more

Resolved Question: Why is there a huge intelligence gap between man and animal, with respect to evolution?

If evolution is true, shouldn't we seen a wider range of intelligence among humans and (other) animals? Other than one or two extinct species, the closet intelligence to our own is a dolphin, gorilla, or maybe an elephant. Even then, their intelligence is equal to that of ~3 year old child. What is the reason for this?  more

When placed into a hypertonic solution, both plant and animal cells shrink and consequently at this state, plant cells become lethal. i did some revising to my paper. Thanks. Resolved Question: The tortoise and the hare question.?

A hare and a tortoise compete in a race over a course 4.70 km long. The tortoise crawls straight and steadily at its maximum speed of 0.430 m/s toward the finish line. The hare runs at its maximum speed of 4.00 m/s toward the goal for 0.800 km and then stops to tease the tortoise. How close to the goal can the hare let the tortoise approach before resuming the race, which the tortoise wins in a photo finish? Assume that, when moving, both animals move steadily at their respective maximum speeds. ------------------ P.S. You don't have to solve the entire problem for me. Any help on what formulas to use would be perfect, I know all the basics physics formulas but I don't know what to set equal to each other or what specific ones to use for each instance, so I'll give a best answer for any number of formulas to use that would get me on the right track... thanks for your time.  more

Resolved Question: According to my beliefs.. where do i stand politically?

I know this is a touchy topic, and i know many of you wont agree with me, but if you could tell me where i stand based on my following ideals, without being insulting, that would be appreciated. I believe there should be free education and healthcare for everybody, regardless of age, religion, gender and race. I think the strong should take care of the weak, and the rich to look after the poor. I think the environment and animal rights is important. I am pro choice, i believe in civil liberties and individual freedoms. I dont believe in god, but believe people can practice religion, provided it does not influence mainstream society and politics and does not infringe on the freedoms of others. I dont like war, but realize its unavoidable sometimes. I think everyone should have an equal chance at making the best out of life. hmm... theres more, but i think you get the general idea.. so what am i? looking for a label here... Taterbug, your entilted to your beliefs, but i disagree, and quite frankly, im not interested, im not after a debate, that was not the purpose of my question I also dont believe in giving free handouts either, but i do believe in helping those who cant help themselves so they can at least have a CHANCE  more

Resolved Question: What is your opinion on the ten things we should know about race?

TEN THINGS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT RACE Our eyes tell us that people look different. No one has trouble distinguishing a Czech from a Chinese. But what do those differences mean? Are they biological? Has race always been with us? How does race affect people today? There's less - and more - to race than meets the eye: 1. Race is a modern idea. Ancient societies, like the Greeks, did not divide people according to physical distinctions, but according to religion, status, class, even language. The English language didn't even have the word 'race' until it turns up in 1508 in a poem by William Dunbar referring to a line of kings. 2. Race has no genetic basis. Not one characteristic, trait or even gene distinguishes all the members of one so-called race from all the members of another so-called race. 3. Human subspecies don't exist. Unlike many animals, modern humans simply haven't been around long enough or isolated enough to evolve into separate subspecies or races. Despite surface appearances, we are one of the most similar of all species. 4. Skin color really is only skin deep. Most traits are inherited independently from one another. The genes influencing skin color have nothing to do with the genes influencing hair form, eye shape, blood type, musical talent, athletic ability or forms of intelligence. Knowing someone's skin color doesn't necessarily tell you anything else about him or her. 5. Most variation is within, not between, "races." Of the small amount of total human variation, 85% exists within any local population, be they Italians, Kurds, Koreans or Cherokees. About 94% can be found within any continent. That means two random Koreans may be as genetically different as a Korean and an Italian. 6. Slavery predates race. Throughout much of human history, societies have enslaved others, often as a result of conquest or war, even debt, but not because of physical characteristics or a belief in natural inferiority. Due to a unique set of historical circumstances, ours was the first slave system where all the slaves shared similar physical characteristics. 7. Race and freedom evolved together. The U.S. was founded on the radical new principle that "All men are created equal." But our early economy was based largely on slavery. How could this anomaly be rationalized? The new idea of race helped explain why some people could be denied the rights and freedoms that others took for granted. 8. Race justified social inequalities as natural. As the race idea evolved, white superiority became "common sense" in America. It justified not only slavery but also the extermination of Indians, exclusion of Asian immigrants, and the taking of Mexican lands by a nation that professed a belief in democracy. Racial practices were institutionalized within American government, laws, and society. 9. Race isn't biological, but racism is still real. Race is a powerful social idea that gives people different access to opportunities and resources. Our government and social institutions have created advantages that disproportionately channel wealth, power, and resources to white people. This affects everyone, whether we are aware of it or not. 10. Colorblindness will not end racism. Pretending race doesn't exist is not the same as creating equality. Race is more than stereotypes and individual prejudice. To combat racism, we need to identify and remedy social policies and institutional practices that advantage some groups at the expense of others.  more

Resolved Question: Everyone: Why do new religions focus on the fact that a god favors humanity above all other life?

This is a long one, but hopefully thought-provoking, so bear with me: From *around* 3,000,000 BC to 8,000 BC (which is when the agricultural revolution began in the area of the fertile crescent and then supposedly spread across the world) humankind did not have religions that were based on the belief that a god/goddess or other deity favored humanity. The cultures of the world, like every other animal, saw themselves as being born belonging to the world. They did not have a god that would favor them above all the other life on this planet, but gods that would not favor any life over another...the life of a human was equal to even a blade of grass. Sometimes it was the lion's time to kill and eat an antelope, and other times it was the antelope's to escape the claws of the lion. We all belonged to this balanced circular route-- some days its our day to die, and other days it's not. The gods didn't favor us any more than the deer we hunted. Animism is the basic worship of spirits that dwell in everything and therefor is not considered a "real" religion...it is seen as "real" religions deal with gods that are worshipped, not spirits and gods that simply are there with no care for human life over any other. Humans didn't even kill another group if that other group of people didn't acknowledge the primacy of their own local gods and spirits, they simply didn't care...it wasn't their to say their gods or spirits were any better. Only in the last tenth of one percent of life we call human have us humans decided that we are the gods' focus on earth. We've taken ourselves out of nature by saying that the world belongs to man...not the way humans had lived for a very long time, as belonging to the world. Now we believe in gods that favor us above all other life on the planet, as we believe that the world was given to us. In just 10,000 years it seems that we have undone ourselves quite well. We kill each other in the name of religion and thinking that we own the earth. So why is this? Why the sudden change from animism to a completely different type of belief? Why did it spread so quickly? Why did humans want to worship gods and suddenly believe that we were the center of the gods' love and devotion above all others? What happens if humans keep thinking they are apart from nature?  more

Resolved Question: Question about same-sex marriage?

Although I do have religious reasons while I oppose same-sex marriage, I have a secular reason. Homosexuals are not alone in being denied the right to marry. In all 50 states, it is illegal to marry more than one person at a time, even "unofficaially". Also, in many states it is illegal for immediate relatives, first cousins, etc. to marry and all states prohibit minors from marrying, though some will allow it with parental permission and they prohibit humans to marry animals. Also, states may annull marriages for "fradualent" reasons, such as marrying for insurance or inheritance benefits. This is odd because that state does not define the legitimate reasons why people can marry, so who's to say the marriage is "fraudulent"? If alternative marriage is necessary to establish equality, who's to say polygamist, incestive, and other forms of marriage are not legitimate? Also, the fact that same-sex couples cannot reproduce is an argument against same-sex marriage. SO, IF SAME-SEX MARRIAGES SHOULD BE LEGALIZED, WHY CAN'T POLYGAMY AND INTER-FAMILY MARRIAGES AND CHILD-ADULT MARRIAGES AND INTER-SPECIES MARRIAGES, ETC. ALSO BE LEGALIZED, THEY SHOULD ALL BE TREATED EQUAL, RIGHT? I'm not saying same-sex marriage is going to CAUSE these things. I'm saying that if same-sex marriages should be allowed, why shouldn't other alternatives marraiges, after all, this would create more equality. Also, if a minor and a adult are married, then sex between them is not considered statutory rape. Also concerning birth defects among inter-family marriage, homos have no right to argue that seeing that THEY CANNOT REPRODUCE AT ALL.  more

Resolved Question: what makes humans think that they are smart?

humans are just another species of animal, equal to all other animals on earth. i cannot think of anything that separates humans from other animals, nor do i think that we are more intelligent than any other species. can you find any differences? if you can, please check back on this page as i'll try to comment on your answer. yes, but the inventions that we make are destroying the world- including ourselves. don't you think that the other species are just as smart or even smarter because they arent killing everything? animals use tools- primates use sticks and even otters use stone tools. as well as this, all of the other animals are aware of their own existance-they breed to repopulate and they have a sense of time they know the seasons and time of year. they have a much better sense of direction and show emotion the same as we do. people call their triats extra senses- why not inteligence? animals use tools- primates use sticks and even otters use stone tools. as well as this, all of the other animals are aware of their own existance-they breed to repopulate and they have a sense of time they know the seasons and time of year. they have a much better sense of direction and show emotion the same as we do. people call their triats extra senses- why not inteligence? other species even practice what we class as genetics- they find the most suitable mate - the strongest, the fastest the prettiest,- selective breeding???  more

Resolved Question: How many fewer animals and plants are there on the planet for every additional human being? ?

what is our cost in other life forms? What is our biological footprint? does each additional person add to the total amount of life forms by making a home for another thousand cockroaches, or do we take away from the total amount because of what we consume and kill off? Resolved Question: Christianity and meat?

K ive been thinking about this a good bit lately and its starting to bother me. To anyone who claims christianity and stills eats meat only a good scale I think is in the wrong. I mean yes in your opinion god made animals for us to eat but does that mean that you have to? NO Meat anymore is completely able to be substited. Theres all kinds of other ways to get protein besides meat. Its selfish when i see church groups come into places to eat and they get like 4 cheeseburgers and double hot wings. It is 100% selfish. Meat isnt about eating for hunger its about taste and pleasure on your taste buds. It is completely selfish to continue to eat meat when in all honesty you dont have to. Its completely selfish for a living thing to die so you can enjoy your whopper. Its not just selfish its bullshit to have no remorse for things dying for your self pleasure. Think about it. I doubt your god wanted animals to be caged and bred only for slaughter for the masses tastebuds. Not only that try to think on average a full grown cow that is only even raised to be killed eats almost 25 lbs of grain per day. An average cow before taken to slaughter weights an average of 1300 lbs. Sounds like a lot but the average life of a cow is 6-7 years. So think from ages of about 3 to 6 its eating 3 lbs of food a day. Which equals around 27000 lbs of food that could be used to feed the world. There is 1 billion starving people in the world and by reducing the demand of grain for cows by reducing yearly world intake it could make a difference. That is an extra 25700 lbs of food per cow in a 3 year period. Think how many hundreds of cows there are that are just fattened up for your tastebuds and how many people could be fed just if people would stop eating beef. This isnt even including chicken, turkey and pork. So my goal is to convince you to have some remorse? Somethings still dying not for hunger but for your tastebuds. Think about it. MY QUESTION IS, DOES ANYONE DISAGREE?  more

Resolved Question: which form of vitamin d is best?

There seems to be two main forms of Vit D ergocalciferol (plant based vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (animal based vitamin D3). There seems to be much uncertainty as to which form is best. Some say D3 is vastly superior, others say D3 is only minimally better, while others say they are about equal. Can anyone offer evidence as to which on IS best? And why is there so much debate as to which one is better, either it is or it isnt there. Thanks  more

Resolved Question: How can these characteristics of water be explained?

A-F are the properties of water that I have to use to describe the phenomenon in 1-8. Each letter can be used more than once, and more than one letter can go with each number. Any help? A) H2O molecules are cohesive; they form hydrogen bonds with each other. B) H2O molecules are adhesive; they form hydrogen bonds with polar surfaces. C) Water is a liquid at normal physiological temperatures. D) Water has a high specific heat. E) Water has a high heat of vaporization. F) Water's greatest density occurs at 4C. 1) During winter, air temps in the northern U.S. can remain below 0C for months, but fish and other animals living in the lakes survive. 2) Many substances--like salt and sucrose--dissolve quickly in water. 3) When 25 mL of water are poured into a grad. cylinder, a meniscus forms at the top of the water column. 4) Sweating and the evaporation of sweat from the body surface help reduce a human's body temperature. 5) A bottle has a liquid mix of equal parts water and mineral oil. When shaken vigorously and placed on a table, the mixture separates into layers of oil over water. 6) Water drops that fall on a surface tend to form rounded drops or beads. 7) Water drops that fall on a car tend to bead or round up more after the car is polished/wax than before it is polished/waxed. 8) If the edge of a paper towel is touched to a drop of colored water, the water will move up into/be absorbed by the towel. Sorry for such a long question. Thanks in advance.  more

Resolved Question: HELP!!! NEED IT NOW..pls underline all the verbal phrases der tnX",)?

One day Rabbit was taking a walk through the jungle and ran into Elephant, who was making a fine meal of the treetops. "Hello, brother," said Rabbit. "Fine day, isn't it?" Elephant paused to look down at the tiny little creature at his feet and snorted. "Leave me be, Rabbit. I don't have the time to waste on someone so small." Rabbit was shocked to be talked to in such a manner. He wasn't sure what to do so he left quietly to go and think about what had happened. As he walked along, he spied mighty Whale far out to sea and decided to ask her what she thought about Elephant's rudeness. He cupped his tiny paws and yelled as loud as he could, "Whaaaaale!! Come heeeeere!!" Whale swam over to see who was calling her and looked about. After a few minutes she spied tiny little Rabbit jumping up and down on a cliff. "Rabbit," Whale said impatiently, "Did you just call me over here?" "Of course," said Rabbit. "Just who do you think you are? You are far too small and weak to have anything to say to me." And at that she turned, flipped her huge tail, and set off back into the deep ocean. But just then Rabbit had an idea. He called out to her one more time, "Whale! You think that I am weak, but in fact, I am stronger than you! You wouldn't be so quick to ignore me if I beat you at Tug-of-War." Whale looked at him for a moment before falling into a fit of laughter. "Very well little one," said Whale. "Go get a rope and we will see who is stronger." Rabbit ran off to gather up the strongest and thickest vine he could. When he found it, he went to Elephant and said to the giant animal, "Elephant, you had no cause to treat me with such discourtesy this afternoon. I shall have to prove to you that we are equals. Elephant looked down between chews and chuckled. "And how will you do that, small one?" Rabbit stood up as high as he could, looked Elephant right in the eye and said, "By beating you at a game of Tug-of-War." Elephant laughed so hard he nearly choked on his leaves, but agreed to humor the tiny animal. He tied the vine around his huge, hefty waist, snickering the whole time. Rabbit took the other end and started off into the jungle. He called back to Elephant, "Wait until I say 'pull' and then pull with all of your might." Rabbit took the other end of the rope to Whale and said, "Tie this to your tail and when I say `pull' you swim with all of your might." Whale tied the vine to her tail, all the while smirking at Rabbit's foolishness. "I will now go and tie the other end to my own waist," said Rabbit, and hopped off into the jungle. Rabbit hid in the bushes and then called out, at the top of his lungs, "PULL!!" Elephant started to walk away with a smile on his face, but the smile soon turned to a look of surprise when the vine stopped following him. "My goodness," he said to himself, "Rabbit is much stronger than I expected!" The look of surprise soon became a frown as Elephant pulled harder and harder, unable to make the tough vine budge any further. Meanwhile, Whale began to swim away from the shore, but almost lost her breath when the vine pulled tight and refused to come with her. She pulled harder and harder, but she could not pull it any further. "That little Rabbit could not possibly be stronger than me," she said in outrage. Soon the vine could take no more strain and, with an ear-splitting sound, snapped into two pieces. When this happened, poor Elephant went sailing through the jungle and tumbled head over heels down a steep valley. The end that was tied to Whale caught up to her suddenly and she went sailing through the ocean and smashed into a very scratchy and very uncomfortable coral reef. Rabbit left without a word and never mentioned the matter again. Elephant and Whale were completely confused and never did figure out how such a tiny creature as Rabbit could have beaten the largest of the animals. And to this day, they are very careful to greet little Rabbit with great respect whenever they meet.  more

Resolved Question: can anyone who is good at english please proof read this and correct it?

Animal Farm This novel is set on Mr. Jones' Manor Farm which is eventually taken over by his animals and renamed Animal Farm. Since this is a "Fairy Story" an exact location or time period isn't clearly established, but the reader can infer that Animal Farm is set early in the 20th century because Mr. Jones' uses a lantern and the animals attempt to use a windmill. Animal Farm is a book about farm animals rebelling and taking over the farm they live on because they are tired of not being treated equal. Mr. Jones, the original owner of Manor Farm, doesn't show the animals kindness so they decide to overpower him and operate the farm themselves so they rename it Animal Farm. The pigs declare they are in charge and control everything pertaining to the farm. They think all animals are equal and want everyone to accept that same theory. Because the pigs have so much power it goes to their heads and eventually they act so much like humans that the other animals can't tell them apart. Napoleon is an extremely underhanded pig that cares about nothing but power. He will do anything to retain control because he is power-hungry. From tricking the other animals to changing the commandments, Napoleon is obsessed with bending the rules to make him happy. Snowball is one of the pigs that are in charge during the beginning of the rebellion. His ideas are for the good of Animal Farm and he wants what is best for it. As the story progresses Snowball is attacked and ran off the farm by the dogs Napoleon has trained. Boxer, a hardworking horse, pushes himself until he is injured thinking he will be rewarded for his efforts. Instead of getting to retire at age twelve, Boxer is sent to what he thinks is a vet, but turns out to be a glue factory where he dies. Mr. Jones ran the farm until the animals took it over. Very seldom was he sober and he didn't treat the animals with respect. Boxer is described as "…an enormous beast...strong as any two ordinary horses put together." (Orwell pg.4) and he lives up to this description by asking the rooster to wake him up earlier than the rest of the animals so he can begin his work. On page 31 Boxer said, "I have no wish to take life, not even human life", which shows that he is tender-hearted. Boxer said this because he thought he killed one of the humans during The Battle of the Cowshed. Another one of Boxer's famous quotes is "I will work harder". It is stated numerous times throughout the novel but is first mentioned on page 21. This quote is similar to "Napoleon is always right." (Orwell pg. 40), which is also one of Boxer's remarks, because it informs the reader that Boxer has been brainwashed into thinking he isn't good enough and that he is incapable of making sufficient decisions.  more

Resolved Question: I need a grammar check on my story for my AP American Lit Class.

Hi, we were assigned a project in which we had to write a creation myth. This is mine. I was hoping that you all could read it and foremost, give me a very detailed grammar check, and maybe tell me what you think. Also if you think I could phrase something better that please tell me. As part of the assignment, we had to make sure that our myths fulfilledd four purposes. 1. Instill Awe about the world 2. Support Native American customs 3. Guide people (morally) 4. Explain something about the world -Please read the story and tell me if you think it does this. I know that this story is rather lengthy, but if you could find it in your heart to help someone like me with their paper, please read and check it. This would help me out so much. After all who better to come to than the Yahoo Answer community. Anyways thanks in advance. -Ben Here is my story: The Origin of the Rivers In the beginning, before men, there were many powerful gods. The gods had lived for a countless amount of years in the spirit world, when they grew tired of their world and wanted to create a new one. The gods quarreled over what it would be like, what would inhabit it, and more importantly, who would create it. The eldest god called together a great council of twelve of the wisest gods. The eldest god explained that the new world would be created by the most astute and athletic of the gods. The council decided upon a series of trials to determine the most able of body and sound of mind. After careful thought and consideration of the competition by the council, the great ones decided upon three tasks that would test each competitor’s abilities. Alas, after much thought and careful planning, the eldest god called together a meeting of the tribe. “First,” said the great chieftain with much authority and sternness, “the most gallant of this mighty tribe will assemble when day breaks three moons from this hour.” The entire tribe began to talk among themselves, wondering who would participate in the trials to come. On the day of the trials, ten of the bravest and most powerful warrior gods assemble before the great council of elders. The elders explained that in the trial the gods would have to run across the Great Desert of Endumortus, climb the mountain of Great Riddilus, and finally answer correctly the riddle of transcendence. The competitors marveled at the difficulty of the challenge. The competitors lined up at the beginning of the desert and began to run. Many grew weary after a short amount of time and could no longer compete. Only six gods were left after the desert crossing, still the most difficult challenge remained as they began to ascend the great mountain. When they reached the summit, only three were left. They were the gods Buenos, Medianus, and Malus. As the three warriors stood atop the summit, the great spirit Riddilus appeared before them. He was adorned in a large headdress. He said, “What are two things that one can never eat for breakfast?”. All three gods thought for some period of time and replied in unison, “Lunch and dinner.” Riddilus smirked at the cleverness of the warriors. He then lifted the three gods and placed them upon his back. He flew to the foothills of the mountain where the council of elders awaited the return of the victorious warrior. The elder council was shocked that three gods had completed the task. They had only anticipated one god to complete such a rigorous course. The eldest god called for a immediate meeting with the council members to decide what to do with the victors. After a brief discussion, they decided to allow all three members to work on the new world. The elders saw potential in each of them that could be combined to form a better world than could be made by a single god. Medianus and Buenos were fine with the new arrangements, but Malus thought that he could create a better world without the help of the others. However, Malus did not show this rage and instead pretended as though he was satisfied with cooperating with Medianus and Buenos. Then the council then left the triumvirate to themselves. The three began to talk about what should be in the world and what should not. Medianus began to form the new world. As he did this, he also created rocks, dirt, plants, animals, as well as the rain. He also created a creature to inhabit this new place, man. Malus sees this and begins to hate this new creature. Malus thought for a short time and eventually Malus began to work. He started a drought, as he was of the crooked mind and could only take away and not create. The drought took away the many good things that Medianus had given man. Buenos however, liked man and wanted to help him. Buenos could not take away the drought as it was started by a god of equal standing. Buenos began to ponder a solution to this problem. He went down to visit this new world. As Buenos arrived, he began to hear the cries of suffering and pain caused by Malus’ drought. He watched as whole groups of people vanished from the lack of Medianus’ rain. He also watched as he saw animals die and plants wither from the heat and lack of water. Buenos sat upon a rock and started to think of a way to help the poor creatures. Buenos sat on the same rock for many days, contemplating the problem at hand. Buenos needed a way to bring water to these people, without them having to rely on the rain. Buenos eventually came up with the idea to create the oceans. He walked to the middle of the desert and began to fill it with a vast amount of water. This restored life to the surrounding lands. Buenos was very happy with his creation. He was so happy that in fact he stayed on the new world to wait for man to see what he had made. When man first gazed upon the oceans, he was in awe of the endless supply of water. The many people ran to the shore of the ocean to drink from the newly found wealth. The people delighted in the taste of the refreshing water. This angered Malus. As the new world blossomed and became full of life, Malus became more discontent. Malus began to think of a way to outdo what Buenos had made. Malus decided that he would taint the water with salt. Man went about his life happily. The ocean provided all the water they would need in times of drought. However this would not last. Malus poisoned all of the world’s water with the wretched salts. This killed the plants and it also made the water undrinkable. Man began to panic at the thought of life without the precious gift that Buenos had bestowed upon them. Buenos was furious with what Malus had done to his creation. Buenos knew however that he could not tamper with the work of another god. Buenos quickly thought of a plan to create a source of water that could not be touched and that would spread throughout the entire land. Buenos then separated the ground and filled this void with fresh water. He then walked along the water and it flowed. Buenos then proclaimed his new creation to man. He called this new body of water “the river“. He was happy with his river and so was man. The world once again flourished and man was able to use the power of the river to travel on canoes and to fish. Malus was once again angered by what Buenos had done. Malus tried to poison the river, but any salt that he put into it, would simply flow down the river and into the ocean. Buenos was enraged by Malus’ actions. He was determined to stop Malus’ attempts to ruin the world. Buenos called upon Medianus to assist him with Malus. Medianus agreed to help and they both began to search for Malus. They found him lying on the beach of the great ocean that he had destroyed. Medianus and Buenos both lifted him, and they threw him into the middle of the ocean. Malus tried to stay afloat, but he gave up after a short while. He then sunk to the cold dark bottom of the ocean. After Malus was killed the world continued to grow. Man was thankful of the good things that Buenos had given them. The people all across the land began to thank Buenos. They sang and danced like the current in the river to praise him. Buenos promised man that he would watch over the water of the world. Buenos became known as “The River Spirit” of the new world that he had helped to create.  more

Resolved Question: Is this the reason why the majority of Black people in America are still poor?

HRES 194 EH H. Res. 194 In the House of Representatives, U. S., July 29, 2008. Whereas millions of Africans and their descendants were enslaved in the United States and the 13 American colonies from 1619 through 1865; Whereas slavery in America resembled no other form of involuntary servitude known in history, as Africans were captured and sold at auction like inanimate objects or animals; Whereas Africans forced into slavery were brutalized, humiliated, dehumanized, and subjected to the indignity of being stripped of their names and heritage; Whereas enslaved families were torn apart after having been sold separately from one another; Whereas the system of slavery and the visceral racism against persons of African descent upon which it depended became entrenched in the Nation's social fabric; Whereas slavery was not officially abolished until the passage of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1865 after the end of the Civil War; Whereas after emancipation from 246 years of slavery, African-Americans soon saw the fleeting political, social, and economic gains they made during Reconstruction eviscerated by virulent racism, lynchings, disenfranchisement, Black Codes, and racial segregation laws that imposed a rigid system of officially sanctioned racial segregation in virtually all areas of life; Whereas the system of de jure racial segregation known as `Jim Crow,' which arose in certain parts of the Nation following the Civil War to create separate and unequal societies for whites and African-Americans, was a direct result of the racism against persons of African descent engendered by slavery; Whereas a century after the official end of slavery in America, Federal action was required during the 1960s to eliminate the dejure and defacto system of Jim Crow throughout parts of the Nation, though its vestiges still linger to this day; Whereas African-Americans continue to suffer from the complex interplay between slavery and Jim Crow--long after both systems were formally abolished--through enormous damage and loss, both tangible and intangible, including the loss of human dignity, the frustration of careers and professional lives, and the long-term loss of income and opportunity; Whereas the story of the enslavement and de jure segregation of African-Americans and the dehumanizing atrocities committed against them should not be purged from or minimized in the telling of American history; Whereas on July 8, 2003, during a trip to Goree Island, Senegal, a former slave port, President George W. Bush acknowledged slavery's continuing legacy in American life and the need to confront that legacy when he stated that slavery `was . . . one of the greatest crimes of history . . . The racial bigotry fed by slavery did not end with slavery or with segregation. And many of the issues that still trouble America have roots in the bitter experience of other times. But however long the journey, our destiny is set: liberty and justice for all.'; Whereas President Bill Clinton also acknowledged the deep-seated problems caused by the continuing legacy of racism against African-Americans that began with slavery when he initiated a national dialogue about race; Whereas a genuine apology is an important and necessary first step in the process of racial reconciliation; Whereas an apology for centuries of brutal dehumanization and injustices cannot erase the past, but confession of the wrongs committed can speed racial healing and reconciliation and help Americans confront the ghosts of their past; Whereas the legislature of the Commonwealth of Virginia has recently taken the lead in adopting a resolution officially expressing appropriate remorse for slavery and other State legislatures have adopted or are considering similar resolutions; and Whereas it is important for this country, which legally recognized slavery through its Constitution and its laws, to make a formal apology for slavery and for its successor, Jim Crow, so that it can move forward and seek reconciliation, justice, and harmony for all of its citizens: Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the House of Representatives-- (1) acknowledges that slavery is incompatible with the basic founding principles recognized in the Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal; (2) acknowledges the fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery and Jim Crow; (3) apologizes to African Americans on behalf of the people of the United States, for the wrongs committed against them and their ancestors who suffered under slavery and Jim Crow; and (4) expresses its commitment to rectify the lingering consequences of the misdeeds committed against African Americans under slavery and Jim Crow and to stop the occurrence of human rights violations in the future. Resolved Question: What do think about this apology from the United States Govt.?

Resolved Question: Do certain ones of your pets have priority in case of emergency?

If there was an emergency, like a tornado or fire, would there be certain animals you'd get out first? Or do you consider all your animals equal? I was thinking about this the other day. The dogs definitely have priority, they'd be the first out. If I had time, I'd get the guinea pig, chinchilla, and gecko. And sorry to the fish, I'm not going to save you, it wouldn't be feasible to stand there with a net and a bucket catching fish out of the tank.  more

Resolved Question: Thoughts on Theodore Kaczynski

If anybody's bored enough to read all this, and has any interest in social or political movements, take a look at this. My questions are do you agree or disagree with these statements? Why or why not? What mischaracterizations does Mr. Kaczynski state that you can prove beyond a reasonable doubt are not true? __________________ 15. Leftists tend to hate anything that has an image of being strong, good and successful. They hate America, they hate Western civilization, they hate white males, they hate rationality. The reasons that leftists give for hating the West, etc. clearly do not correspond with their real motives. They SAY they hate the West because it is warlike, imperialistic, sexist, ethnocentric and so forth, but where these same faults appear in socialist countries or in primitive cultures, the leftist finds excuses for them, or at best he GRUDGINGLY admits that they exist; whereas he ENTHUSIASTICALLY points out (and often greatly exaggerates) these faults where they appear in Western civilization. Thus it is clear that these faults are not the leftist's real motive for hating America and the West. He hates America and the West because they are strong and successful. 16. Words like "self-confidence," "self-reliance," "initiative", "enterprise," "optimism," etc. play little role in the liberal and leftist vocabulary. The leftist is anti-individualistic, pro-collectivist. He wants society to solve everyone's needs for them, take care of them. He is not the sort of person who has an inner sense of confidence in his own ability to solve his own problems and satisfy his own needs. The leftist is antagonistic to the concept of competition because, deep inside, he feels like a loser. 17. Art forms that appeal to modern leftist intellectuals tend to focus on sordidness, defeat and despair, or else they take an orgiastic tone, throwing off rational control as if there were no hope of accomplishing anything through rational calculation and all that was left was to immerse oneself in the sensations of the moment. 18. Modern leftist philosophers tend to dismiss reason, science, objective reality and to insist that everything is culturally relative. It is true that one can ask serious questions about the foundations of scientific knowledge and about how, if at all, the concept of objective reality can be defined. But it is obvious that modern leftist philosophers are not simply cool-headed logicians systematically analyzing the foundations of knowledge. They are deeply involved em
