Open Question: C++ Equilateral Triangle?? Help Please?

Hey guys...first and foremost I am not trying to get you guys to do my home work, I just need a little help b/c I am new at C++...Ok so the user must enter a symbol and the number of lines, right now I have a right triangle coming out but I need a equilateral triangle...I think I only need to add 1 to the numSymbolsNeeded but I am not exactly sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. #include <iostream> using namespace std; int main() { int numLines; //user entered total number of lines to be drawn char symbol; //user entered symbol to be used char userwantsto; //do you wish to continue? int lineCounter; //counter to determine what line is being drawn int numSymbols; //counter to determine how many symbols drawn int numSymbolsNeeded = 2; //counter to determine the total number of symbols //to be drawn on that line cout << "This program will ... " << endl << endl; cout << "Do you wish to continue? (y = yes, n = no): "; cin.sync(); cin.get(userwantsto); userwantsto = tolower(userwantsto); //convert user's answer to lowercase // toupper will convert the variable // to uppercase. toupper and tolower // will convert one character. If you have // several to convert, you’ll need to loop // through character by character. // In this case, we only asked for one // character – a y for yes and n for no. while (userwantsto != 'y' && userwantsto != 'n') { cout << "Invalid response. Enter a y for yes or n for no: "; cin.sync(); // clear out buffer cin.clear(); // set for a good read cin.get(userwantsto); } if (userwantsto == 'n') return 0; cout << "\n\nEnter the symbol to be used to draw the right triangle: "; cin.sync(); cin.get(symbol); cout << "How many lines do you want the triangle to be? "; cin >> numLines; while (!cin || numLines <= 0 || numLines > 80) //invalid input was entered { cout << "Invalid response, the number of lines must be an integer " << endl << "between 1 and 80, try again:" ; cin.sync(); cin.clear(); cin >> numLines; } //this first for loop controls the number of lines of the triangle //after each pass, the lineCounter is incremented until it is equal to //the appropriate number of lines entered by the user. for ( lineCounter = 1; lineCounter <= numLines; lineCounter++) { for (numSymbols = 0; numSymbols < numSymbolsNeeded; numSymbols++) { cout << symbol; //add 1 symbol at a time on the same line //until the number of symbols written is //equal to the number of symbols needed //for this line. } cout << endl; //go to the next line numSymbols = 0; numSymbolsNeeded++; //increment the number of symbols to //be displayed on the next line by 1 } return 0; }  more

Voting Question: Judicial activism, judicial restraint and stare decisis?

Beginning with Gitlow v. New York (1925), Near v. Minnesota (1929), Powell v. Alabama (1932), and Mapp v. Ohio (1961), the U.S. Supreme Court applied the "equal protection of the laws" clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the actions of state and local officials. How does one apply the concepts of judicial activism and judicial restraint to incorporating or nationalizing the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution in the cases of Griswold v. Connecticut (1965) and Roe v. Wade (1973) plus two recent sets of decisions involving church-state relations and the government's power of eminent domain? In two June 27, 2005, First Amendment cases, the Court split 5-4 on cases involving the display of religious symbols on (1) the grounds of the Texas Capitol and (2) the inside walls of two Kentucky courthouses. In the Texas case, [Thomas] Van Orden v. [Gov. Rick] Perry, the Supreme Court affirmed the rulings of a federal district court in Austin and the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans that a six-foot granite monument with the Ten Commandments had a valid secular purpose since it was one of 17 monuments and 21 historical markers in a 22-acre historical and cultural park at the Capitol. In the Kentucky cases, McCreary [and Pulaski] County v. American Civil Liberties Union, Justice Souter--who was the swing vote in both cases--noted that Kentucky officials first displayed only the Ten Commandments. Only after a federal district judge ruled that the display overtly promoted one particular religion did county officials add the Magna Carta and the Declaration of Independence, while appealing to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati and the U.S. Supreme Court. (See Linda Greenhouse, "Justices Allow a Commandment Display, Bar Others," New York Times, Internet edition, June 28, 2005, and Steven Kreytak, "Ten Commandments statue at Capitol can stay," Austin American Statesman, Internet edition, June 28, 2005. In the second 5-4 case, Kelo v. City of New London, Connecticut, Justice John Paul Stevens ruled on June 23, 2005, that the City of New London could condemn 15 homes in the Fort Trumbull neighborhood to proceed with a large-scale plan with a conference hotel and office space for research and development by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, and a pedestrian "riverwalk" along the Thames River in Connecticut. Stevens noted that earlier Supreme Court decisions interpreting the Fifth Amendment had allowed the use of eminent domain to redevelop a blighted neighborhood in Washington, to redistribute land ownership in Hawaii, and to assist a gold-mining company in a decision by Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes in 1906. "Promoting economic development is a traditional and long accepted function of government," Justice Stevens said, adding, "Clearly there is no basis for exempting economic development from our traditionally broad understanding of public purpose." (See Linda Greenhouse, "Justices Uphold Taking Property for Development," New York Times, Internet edition, June 24, 2005. How are judicial activism, judicial restraint and stare decisis relevant in these four sets of cases? What do your two textbooks say about the tendencies of state and federal judges to apply constitutional protections to individuals in privacy cases, police arrests, searches, and wiretapping, especially after the USA Patriot Act of 2001 gave President George W. Bush, Attorneys General John Ashcroft and Alberto Gonzalez, and state and local officials broad authority to carry out intelligence and surveillance activities on Americans and "enemy combatants"? Should local, state, or federal security officials (e.g., FBI, Secret Service, Homeland Security, the Texas Department of Public Safety, local police, and prison authorities) be hampered or restrained by the need to obtain a search warrant from a federal district judge, and are they really hampered in the enforcement of state and federal laws including those affecting immigration, international drug trafficking, identity theft, and computer hacking? Remember the prison telephone conversations of former Assistant Attorney General Webster Hubbell with his wife, which were recorded by federal officials and then released by Indiana Republican Dan Burton in May 1998 in what appeared to be an effort to embarrass President Clinton in the Whitewater and Monica Lewinsky investigations by then Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr. Neither Congressman Burton nor any FBI or federal prison official was reprimanded or punished for releasing the transcripts of these private conversations.  more

Open Question: I need some help with pronunciation of the phonetic symbols?

I'm a Polish student being at an university at the moment. I'm not boasting myself here, but I'm really good in reading (pronunciation) and writing in English. I'm going to have an exam of phonetic symbols during the next slide of ny group. Thus, I would like to ask for some help, because there are some matters of the sounds of certain phonetic symbols that make me a bit confused. Namely, the first symbol that seem to me as the most complex one is the Ə symbol. As I have found out so far, it may be pronounced as "O" in pOtato (or the "O" in Of), as "A" in about, as this kind of "U" in hEr and as the "E" in itEm. Now the difficulty here, is that how should I know, how and when to pronounce this symbol? If, for instance, Ə may sound the same as the phonetic e, how do I know then that in the word "item" ('aitƏm") there should be written this Ə and not e? Should I guess it from the other symbols preceding or following this symbol? The other thing, is that one sound may have two phonetic equivalents. I may, for instance, write the word "bed" as /bed/, but I may also write it as /bɛd/. Regarding the fact that these symbols are equal in the sound meaning, then I guess there is no difference in writing the one or the other, but why are there two symbols for the same sound? The other two symbols that sounding of which I would like to be certain of, are θ and ð. Both of these sounds represent the "th" cluster within letters, but I would like to be sure when to write which of these symbols in phonetics. I'm not sure of it, but is it that the ð symbol is written when the i: symbol occurs after it? And, if so, the θ symbol is written in all other cases (like in welθ, when there is no following sound after the θ symbol)? I'm aware of this question being pretty long, but I really need some help here, please. If anyone could help me with it, I would be really grateful  more

Resolved Question: Do you think Michelle Obama's choice of dress was an accident?

Black and red bisected symbolism The red-and-black flag is the symbol of the anarcho-syndicalist and anarcho-communist movements. Black is the traditional color of anarchism, and red is the traditional color of socialism. The red-and-black flag combines the two colors in equal parts, with a simple diagonal split. Typically, the red section is placed on the top-left corner, with the black on the bottom-right corner of the flag. This symbolizes the co-existence of anarchist and socialist ideals within the anarcho-syndicalism movement, and to symbolize the more socialistic means of the movement leading to a more anarchistic end. The CNT-FAI's version of the red-and-black flag One of the most famous variations of the anarcho-syndicalist flag is that of Spain's Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (National Confederation of Labor, CNT), which still exists today. The CNT, along with the Federación Anarquista Ibérica (Iberian Anarchist Federation, FAI), a major militant faction within the CNT, was a major player in the popular anarchist movements in Spain of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This group has its own version of the red-and-black flag with its initials on the flag. CNT is in the red, while FAI is in the black – the color of anarchy – as the FAI was founded in 1927 to keep the CNT dedicated to anarchist principles. Black and Red Africa - Zabalaza Federation's logo Another variation on the red-and-black theme is the red-and-black Africa used mostly by the Zabalaza Anarchist Communist Federation (ZACF or ZabFed), a federation of anarchist groups in South Africa. ZabFed was inspired by the Organisational Platform of the Libertarian Communists. ZabFed members share a basic agreement in terms of theoretical and tactical unity, collective responsibility, and federalism as suggests by the Platform. In historical terms the Platformist tradition starts with The Organizational Platform of the Libertarian Communists, and in the post-war period many include documents like the Georges Fontenis' pamphlet Manifesto of Libertarian Communism. The symbolism of a united Africa, displayed in traditional anarchist communist colours, is an important one, as a mixture of different demographic groups are represented by Zalabaza in the midst of a societal environment that is otherwise tense with post-colonial racial and sexual issues. Resolved Question: is this true? got it forwarded to me through mail?

U REALLY HAV 2 READ THIS READ DIS!! 1) New York City has 11 letters 2) Afghanistan has 11 letters. 3) Ramsin Yuseb (The terrorist who threatened to destroy the Twin Towers in 1993) has 11 letters. 4) George W Bush has 11 letters. This could be a mere coincidence, but this gets more interesting: 1) New York is the 11th state. 2) The first plane crashing against the Twin Towers was flight number 11. 3) Flight 11 was carrying 92 passengers. 9 + 2 = 11 4) Flight 77 which also hit Twin Towers, was carrying 65 passengers. 6+5 = 11 5) The tragedy was on September 11, or 9/11 as it is now known. 9 + 1+ 1 = 11 6) The date is equal to the US emergency services telephone number 911. 9 + 1 + 1 = 11. Sheer coincidence..?! Read on and make up your own mind: 1) The total number of victims inside all the hi-jacked planes was 254. 2 + 5 + 4 = 11. 2) September 11 is day number 254 of the calendar year. Again 2 + 5 + 4 = 11. 3) The Madrid bombing took place on 3/11/2004. 3 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 4 = 11. 4) The tragedy of Madrid happened 911 days after the Twin Towers incident. Now this is where things get totally eerie: The most recognised symbol for the US, after the Stars & Stripes, is the Eagle. The following verse is taken from the Quran, the Islamic holy book: "For it is written that a son of Arabia would awaken a fearsome Eagle. The wrath of the Eagle would be felt throughout the lands of Allah and lo, while some of the people trembled in despair still more rejoiced: for the wrath of the Eagle cleansed the lands of Allah and there was peace." That verse is number 9.11 of the Quran. uncovinced about all of this Still ..?! Try this and see how you feel afterwards, it made my hair stand on end: Open Microsoft Word and do the following: 1. Type in capitals Q33 NY. This is the flight number of the first plane to hit one of the Twin Towers. 2. Highlight the Q33 NY. 3. Change the font size to 48. 4. Change the actual font to the WINGDINGS What do you think now?!!  more

Resolved Question: First chapter (thoughts)?

This is a short part of my story. Be specific! And honesty gets the best answer. I'm fourteen. And what should I name it? "This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: the same destiny overtakes all. The hearts of men, moreover, are filled with evil and there is madness in their hearts while they live, and afterward they join the dead." -Ecclesiastes 9.3 (Alecial's POV) What was death? Was it some nightmare that had become a bitter reality, or the transition into another miserable, neverending life? As much as I knew about death, I was just as oblivious asany. Very few remembered their lives after they entered death; those few that did had been respected above all others. And so I, Alecial Santiago Hale, became the leader of the dead. I did my job well despite my inexperience, and I kept an exceptionally close watch on those who entered the dreadful place. "Alecial, leader of the damned..." My voice echoed terribly through the empty courtyard. Grey sky, dull landscape; the same thing I had grown used to. Time had no significance, and the nights and days seemed to be merely symbols of what had been. What only I could remember. How long the days seemed, how my misery seemed to grow. How long had it been since I had been amongst the living? Years? Centuries? Millenia?? How long would an eternity seem, then, if it never ended? There were some that had gone to some other land after passing, people I remembered all too well. Had they simply faded away, as phantoms do in the mist, or were they in some better existance? For me there had been no reprieve. I would never simply fade. I felt a familiar alarm sound in my mind. The Council was calling me. I made my way to the usual meeting place, ready for any sort of action. The circle of Elders awaited me, and each in turn bowed to me. The last of them, Raphael, shook my hand. Olive skin, blue eyes, black hair, acceptance in the lines of his preserved face. How different he was from myself. The closest thing I had to an equal. "Sir, we seem to have a strange series of murders in the other land. And there have been many plagues and rebellions. More shall be added to our rank. What do you want done, if one should enter?" "Observe them very closely, then report their actions to me. We need to know what we'll be dealing with. But tell them not. Act as though they are your guests. We cannot know about them any other way, and knowledge is vital. I trust you'll do these things. Good day to you." I turned away without letting any of them speak. As if their words meant anything to me while I was feeling so utterly alone. They were loyal followers, but I did not need followers. I needed equals. Perhaps that was why I watched the others so closely. Because it gave a false sense of hope. Maybe one would speak to me as a fellow. Maybe one would at least understand the pain. It wasn't much, this dream, but it gave me something to hope for, a light in the darkness. But then, perhaps darkness was better than blinding light... How terrible it was to never sleep, to never escape the coldness that was death. No way to escape my own mind, with its sorrows and regrets. The concept in itself was maddening. It was hardly tolerable, especially when I had to lead the others without revealing my thoughts. I sighed. How desolate the days had become. I remembered the moments I had lived in the first world. A scholar of sorts, avoiding the ones I knew because of their idiocy. Which had been, of course, the entire Roman Empire. But did my knowledge mean anything, really, when I did not live in the world from which it came? Perhaps brooding was not the best way to waste my time. There were so many other ways. And I had all the time in the world to try them all. I supposed that bothering the Elders by giving them impossible tasks could have been amusing enough. And they would obey me - everyone did. After a few moments of smothering myself with unnecessary pain, I remembered why I had shunned the pain for so long. It wasn't doing me any good, so what was the point of it? No, I would never forget, but dwelling on such things was a waste of time - not that it mattered. But it would stop me from despising myself. What was there to do with my time, besides that? Without food, without sleep, without death, was there any refuge? To hell with the searching - I needed to DO something. But what was there? Easy. There was brooding, there was finding a solution (which, quite honestly, required a lot of brooding on its own), and there was compensation. I liked the idea of that. I ran through the rooms of the stone structure, hoping that at least one room would be occupied. Glass doors and windows, extravagent furniture - emptiness. And at last, some other being. Raphael. I wanted violence. I wanted to rip his throat out, to hear his screams, to break every bone in his b I wanted violence. I wanted to rip his throat out, to hear his screams, to break every bone in his body, just so that he could feel the same pain I felt. And yet there he was, vulnerable eyes filled with something other than fear, and I would not, could not harm him. But I could still bleed. I fell to my knees, and my wordless screams and sobs filled the room. They seemed to consume anything surrounding them, and yet when I closed my eyes I heard them not. The world was gone. There was me, there was pain, and there was my pain. He was still before me when my eyes opened, sitting in a stiff armchair, clasping the arms with his seemingly strong hands. Trying not to impose, I assumed. It wouldn't have mattered if he had been imposing. I was too busy clamoring on to worry about him. "Do you need anything?" he asked me. Genuine concern. If only he had known exactly how much I needed. "Nothing that you can give me. Do not worry about me, Raphael. I do not need yourr concern." I did not know if that was a lie. "But surely you need something..." "As I said, none of you can give me what I need. Act flawed like the rest of us; perfection has no place in such a land. Leave me to my own devices, will you?" He began to walk away, but turned at the doorway. "Another one arrived, just so you know," his friendly voice told me just before he left. "What man can live and not see death, or save himself from the power of the grave?" Ps 89:48 (Tristan's POV) Darkness. The first thing I saw was the darkness. And then, like some great horrendous thing coming upon me, the light came. My eyes seemed to welcome it as they did nothing else, but I accepted it. It seemed to be hope to me. I became so immersed in this new ray of hope that I did not notice the four faces watching me almost hatefully. I cringed away from them. The hatred in their eyes was alarming. WHAT SHOULD THE TITLE OF IT BE? WHAT SHOULD THE TITLE OF IT BE? Basically, it's about Alecial, and also about the newcomer trying to find out why he can't remember anything. He finds out and goes crazy on Alecial until he remembers and gets to know the pain of memory. Eventually Alecial gets to leave.  more

I wanted to rip his throat out, to hear his screams, to break eve I wanted violence. The hatred in their eyes was alarming.  more

Resolved Question: Is it possible to be a feminist Christian, or do Christians hate feminists?

In 1 Corinthians 11 6. For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. but if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered 7 For a man indeed ought not to cover *his* head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 for man is not of woman, but woman of man. 9 Nor was man created for the woman, but the woman for the man. 10 For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head. Also in 1 Timothy it talks that a woman should obey her husband and not become a teacher, braid her hair, wear expensive clothes, and also not talk in church and somewhere else it says that if she wants to ask something about church she should go home and ask her husband. So basically it says that women should be obedient and submissive to their husbands, and that they were made for men to use? This seems rather opposite to feminism to me. So when feminists say they want equal rights, do Christians disagree with them?  more

Resolved Question: What role does architecture play in religion?

I have often heard the theory that the domination of landscape by the imposing figure of church, mosque, or temple, solidifies the foundation of a religion; as a symbol of the concrete, an impressive structure fixes in the minds of the populace the displayed authority of religion. It is worth considering what form established religions might have taken if they were denied these structural bases. I am often reminded of those famous words that the Russian emissaries conveyed back to Moscow upon seeing Hagia Sophia in Constantinople: "We knew not whether we were in heaven or on earth, for there is no such place on earth, and we do not know how to describe it. We can only say that there, God dwells among men." A rather impressive appraisal, that. Religious structures, impressive in architectural design and rich in ornamentation, apparently fulfill a very human need when one considers the presence of an invisible being: they provide a tangible link with the unknowable, an idea that here is a holy place, a place distinct from every other place attended in a person's life, a place where one might feel a little closer to deity. This is an unusual thing, particularly when one considers Jesus's statement there would come the day when no one worshipped in any temple, but in their heart....perhaps Jesus did not reckon with the strong need people have to venerate, through architecture and ornamentation, the objects of their worship. At any rate, the architectural monuments of religion are an established, everyday fact for nearly every culture. What are your thoughts on the usefulness of such architecture in relation to religion? Are they truly necessary? Would religion survive without them, and, if so, in what form? What about those nature religions that do not worship in anything save the natural world? Do they hold equal place in the general esteem of mankind? Is the cathedral of nature every bit as impressive and sanctified as St. Peter's? Thank you for your thoughts on all of this.  more

Resolved Question: Can someone read my essay and please give me advice on how it can be better?

thank you so much here it is: Political, economic, and social conditions have often led to turning points that have changed the course of history for nations and peoples. Example, The French Revolution. It was the age of reason/enlightenment. The causes of the French Revolution are concerned with the class differences that were existent in France. France gained a lot of their power, influence, and wealth. In France these people were put into categories. First and second estates consist of the rich nobility and the clergy. Over 95% of the population was the third estate which included bourgeoisie (middle class) and the poverty-stricken lower class. Conflicts began between the third estates when they demanded an equal say in government. Some of the political, economic and social causes of revolution that occurred in France which are that Louis XVI were a weak ruler and his wife was unpopular. American Revolution inspired political ideas. Wars and royal extravagance created debt, inflation and famine caused problems such as peasants making little money but paid high taxes. That in my opinion is injustice. The Revolution and ensuing wars with Europe devastated France’s economy. The French feudal system eventually was abolished. I can relate the French to Latin America because the French Revolution inspired political ideas. Royal officials committed injustices and repression. Napoleon’s conquest of Spain triggered revolt. Peninsulares and creoles controlled wealth and lower classes toiled as peasants with little income or as slaves. Only peninsulares and creoles had power just like in the French Revolution, only the rich nobility and the clergy had control and the peasants were being treated unfairly. The Mestizos, mulattos, Africans, and Indians had little status in Latin America. In Latin America there was a great deal of racism. Educated Creoles spread enlightenment ideas. Nearly all colonial rules in Latin America ended, new countries were established and representation government was slow to develop. The military or the wealthy controlled much of the region until the late 1900’s. Many places kept the plantation system and much of Latin America continued to have a strong class system as well. The American republic, because of the enlightenment ideas, became a symbol of freedom in Europe and Latin America. The United States constitution became a model for liberal government. The American Revolution’s success inspired others to revolt against their governments. In conclusion The French Revolution and Latin America have changed our nations and peoples but there are still a few things that are still with us such as, racism. It is still all around us but it isn’t as bad as it was before. There are positive things to say about the revolutions though. Lower class people aren’t being treated unfairly like back then and enlightenment ideas have helped this world a lot. People are afraid of change sometimes but change has given us more opportunities even if some were negative there were still some that were positive that has helped us a lot. thanks a lot taylor loves 2 cheer =D  more

Resolved Question: Can you help me with my math homework?

This is Algebra 1. These are the possible answers, they may be used more than once: y=x y=x^2 (that is x squared or x to the second power) y=x^3 (thats x cubed/ x to the third power, sorry i cannot get exponents) y= |x| that is the absolute value of x y= [|x|] those are brackets that are outside the absolute vaule of x y=1/x or 1 over x or 1 divided by x y= the square root of x (it is the check symbol) Each one of those functions matches to one of these problems. 1. I am also calleda quadratic function. _____________ 2. My range is all real numbers greater than or equal to 0. ________ 3. I am a special type of step function. __________ 4.
