Open Question: Have you ever read the Declaration of Independence?
I have not until today. With all the turmoil happening in our country, I thought it would be a good way to celebrate the 4th of July. Then I began wondering how many people have actually ever read it. Have you? _____________________________________________ IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776. The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America, When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world. He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good. He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them. He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only. He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures. He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people. He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within. He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands. He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers. He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries. He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance. He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures. He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power. heres something i found and it was an eyeopener: Thinking back to myself girls always say something like revealing their self is how do you say it, empowering. But if you really look back it is how you say demeaning. I mean this gives guys the right to think their better than us. They can make a stereotypical picture of us that rather than empowers us it demeans us. We have acomplished so much in this country of ours. I mean we even have an african american president. But for some reason wome have infact taken a down turn. If you really look you can find revealing photos of women anywhere you go. People wonder why girls have eating disorders its because those airbrushed girls or those stereotypical drawings make girls think that have to look like that in order to make guys look like that. In fact thats why girls are wearing a lot less its to get attention from those same guys. Would the people fighting for Women's Right look at us and be ashamed because instead of trying to focus futures of bright young women we are exposing them instead? I think so. Since when are the Pussycat Dolls a good role model? They wear barely anything out in public. Is that suppose to make men respest women? No wonder most men don't think of us as individuals. We demean ourselves. Why is Hilary Clinton always percieved as bad? So shes not a hot young model and her clothes are not revealing, does that really make her any less of a politian? What if she were a man, the would you vote for her? I saw a poster of Bratz dolls, the children toys. They were barely wearing anything. What I am really wondering is why someone would think thats a good toy for young girls? They are going to think well if the Bratz doll wears it why can't I? Then why can't she. Infact if girls are going to act like this, posing in racy shot and barely wearing anything, what future do they have anyway. Yes some girls are very accompished but look aroung and you will see what i see. We are not equals and we did this to ourselves. For shame, for shame because we can learn just as well as mean but we are not taking advantage of that. I am ashamed of what we are and have become. People do not fight for our freedom so we can walk around in skampy little outfits. It disgusts me. I am so mortified that I can even express exzactly how I feel about this. I need your view on this. I have already gotten one other trainers views on it, and I want to get views from trainers that are not friends with me. you know, Unbiased views. Alright...it started out just fine in a debate with a person who i thought was my friend. She is not a dog trainer of any kind, let alone a titled dog trainer. I am an apprentice trainer to a titled trainer. I am perfectly fine with people disagreeing with my methods of training, but i want mutual respect and to respectfully disagree, one trainer to another. I use a mixture of correction and praise with my dog training. I use choke collars, prong collars, and e collars for corrections. (e collars for off-leash only and for deaf dogs). She condemned the trainer i work with and myself for using chokers because supposively it is sucking the life out of a living breathing animal by choking it. I responded that chokers do not really choke dogs in dog training unless used incorrectly. She told me that they do, and i wouldnt know but she would because she has special connections with dogs and sees/feels how they act after a choke collar is used on them. I quickly changed the subject because it was becoming more angry and less debate. You know. You suck. Your evil. Ylour a bad person. You shoudlnt have dogs. I digress. I asked her how she would train and she said that she would use treats and positive reinforcement. I believe that there is good and bad from these methods (as there is with any dog training method). i asked her how she would deal with a dog running towards traffic when she doesnt have a treat on her to bribe the dog back. SHe said she would use sharp noises to grab the dogs attention. I believe that this is a valid point, however I have seen her dog before and the dog has no respect for her. It is just a laid back dog. What happens if the cat across the street is more interesting. i then followed up by asking how she wuold deal with an aggressive dog of hers. She said she wuold give a person food to feed the dog so the dog learns that good things come from strangers. What happens when someone is walking across the sidewalk and her dear dog charges them and they have no food to appease the beast? She said that Victoria Stillwell solves aggressive dogs all the time with these methods. She told me that she uses the way that dogs in the wild are in a pack. I dont think that any of her methods aer like in the wild. i believe that my methods are more "natural" than hers. Your beliefs? She also told me that you should never try to be dominent over your dog but be equal so there can be trust and friendship between you two. She also condemned me for my work with dogs in protection work and my future plan to get a shepherd and teach it to herd. She believes that all dogs should just be house pets i guess. -shrugs- The conversation ended with her blaming my girlfriend (the titled dog trainer) and I for the aggression that our dog showed that resulted in us having to put her down. She told us basically taht if we had loved the dog the proper way, the dog would not have had aggressive tendencies and we had no right to take the dogs life. Now, I am not basing my move off of anecdotal answers given on this or any other site. I am however, looking for anecdotes (small stories) to help guide me a little bit. This move I am thinking about making with my boyfriend will not occur until I have a good fiscal foundation and have everything as thoroughly planned as I possibly can. My question is for anyone who has either VISITED Spain or LIVED in Spain (stories from friends or family members are also welcomed). I have never lived in or visited Spain or any other Spanish speaking country in my whole life. Life in America has advantages and disadvantages. Most of the advantages are self-explanatory (familiarity with food, customs, lifestyle. Have access to many different geographies within one country, etc). However, some of its disadvantages are starting to worry me and leave with me with depression and anxiety. I am only 20 years old, but am already starting to feel the effects of this country. I see on American TV each day how people are becoming more and more against each other. I see the religious of America pressuring politicians and lawmakers into writing religious law. I see the economy continuing to decline while other countries are actually trying to curb its effect on their people. I am tired of the fast-paced, cut-throat, profit profit profit lifestyle. To me, it just seems like no one in this country knows how to slow down and enjoy life. You may ask, Why Spain? Well a few years ago Spain was one of 7 countries to provide equal marriage rights for all of its citizens. Here in America, only a handful of our States provide equal marriage rights, and there is a Federal law prohibiting the provision of equal marriage rights (on a Federal level). Also, I found that the other countries that provides equal marriage rights are not located in the climate I am looking for. With that being said, I chose Spain because of its climate. I do not like cold winters and I like hot summers. I was looking into the Valencia area also because of rain. I love the rain and would like to be in an area that receives rain. (If anyone could suggest another area that satisfies the above, please do so.) I also chose Spain because I have some familiarity with the language. I am not, by any means, fluent but I am able to pick out bits and pieces of written text or slowly spoken sentences. I love adventure and I also have a knack for visiting large cities. I also love travel (which is yet another reason for Spain). I will be close to many different countries in Europe with Africa to my South and the UK to the North. I am not looking for a 'magic pill' that will take away all of my woes. I am just looking for a better place that isn't as fast-paced but I am still able to enjoy some 'night life' and some adventure and culture. I am looking to get away from some of the political woes (including continuous war(s) that my country is involved in) and the whole dog-eat-dog social structure that defines America. Also, many political theorists posit that the current trend of social woes and political acts (war, taxes, budgets, etc) and other trends are pointing to a possible collapse of the United States (as it is known today) into smaller groups and/or States. Whether this is true or not is not part of this question. I would rather err on the side of caution. With all this being said, what does Spain offer? What would be the best place (and safest) for a homosexual wanting to enjoy a marriage with the one I Love? Is there much of a lifestyle and outlook difference? Since I am non-religious, is Spain (its government) lesser controlled/influenced by 'the Church' than in the US? Women are protected during pregnancy. That is how it should be. This rule of "segregation" is to protect your child. Its not about the woman. Title VII prohibits discrimination in employment on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion or sex, including pregnancy. The consent decree, which still needs court approval, bars the sheriff from discriminating against any employee or applicant of the Bryan County Sheriff's Office, including the jail, on the basis of sex and pregnancy, the Justice Department said. Is the US government Constitutionally obligated to provided any form of healthcare for the citizens of the US? If so, where in the Constitution is this stated? If not, why is the government superseding the 10th Amendment? Laid out now are some common amendments that will most likely be sourced. All text after each Amendment is purely my opinion. "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people." - 9th Amendment to the Constitution ======================================== This amendment states that any rights guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States cannot contradict the rights, guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States, of yourself or others. "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." - 10th Amendment to the Constitution ======================================== This amendment states that any right not explicitly given to the federal government by the Constitution of the United States is therefore reserved for the individual states. "Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." - 14th Amendment to the Constitution, Section 1 ======================================== This is most likely the amendment that most people will point to. The first part of section 1 lays out the requirements of citizenship. The second part (in my opinion) merely states that the government cannot enact any law that would abridge the privileges or immunities of a citizen of the United States. The act of not providing a service is not "enacting a law that would abridge the privileges or immunities of a citizen of the United States". The third part states the the government will provide a fair trial before incarceration/imprisonment, etc. The last part of section 1 states that any person (citizen of non-citizen) inside the United States is guaranteed the equal protection of the laws of the United States.@bash: true, the US Constitution is not infallible, as seen by the Amendments added to it. Considering the 10th Amendment though, wouldn't it still be Constitutional to allow each state to handle health care, if the citizens of the state decided? "Section 8. I learned about this yesterday on CBC that many aboriginals would like to have the Indian Act abolished and instead have equal legislation indiscriminate of other Canadians extening full rights to first nations people. Did you ever notice how most people wander about, drive around, and act in life,..almost like robots who do things without even thinking things through? You can't really change their mind, and there's nothing you can really do to make the world a better place either, because the world seems to be marching blindly to its own drummer, regardless of what you think, say, or do. It makes no difference. That's the foundation of the problem. Now my concern is what STEMS from this. All sorts of manipulation, evils, etc,..because heck according to THOSE beliefs, there ARE no rules. And most of society, government, etc, is SO far into this line of thinking that you basically HAVE to be cut-throat and evil to make it or work there. THis is basically everywhere, and gets worse because it gets passed down from generation to generation, and nothing ever changes. Now if you're spiritual, Christian or religious, .... you look at these people, sigh, and just realize that you're not like them, and they realize that they're not like you, and it creates conflict. Let’s All Accept Islam by Bruce Bialosky Mr. Obama, your speech in Cairo encouraged me to reconsider my thoughts on how I view Islam as a religion in today’s society. I have really thought it over and decided to fully accept Islam … with just a few caveats. First, they have to stop treating women as second class citizens. Don’t tell me those head covers are worn by choice. They are forced on them just like honor killings. It is sad the French have it right and we don’t on this issue. This is a country where we have worked for a hundred years to bring equality to women. Allowing any woman to be subservient is disgraceful. And come to think of it, tell your Secretary of State and Speaker of the House to stop covering their heads on visits. They are supposed to be beacons of the women’s movement. By covering their heads, they are not being respectful to their hosts-- they are disgracing every woman who ever fought for equal rights. Next, tell the Islamists to stop killing gays. Maybe gays are not totally accepted in this society, but we have made great progress in the last 50 years. We may not agree on gay marriage, but we certainly agree on equal rights for gays. We don’t allow them to be killed just for being gay. How about the issue of freely elected democratic governments in the Muslim world? Not too many of those around, are there Mr. Obama? When the Islamic world stops being run like feudal societies given up by the rest of the world half a millennium ago, I think it would then be a grand time to accept the Muslims. I know it is sometimes politically expedient to deal with dictators. We even had to make a deal with a mass murderer named Stalin to try and fight another mass murderer named Hitler. But please explain to me why in today’s world, where the great majority of people live in democracies, that we need to make nice-nice with dictators. Next, the Muslims should stop trying to tell us they really care about the Palestinians and that the trouble in the Middle East is because of their problems. The Arabs have done nothing -- I repeat nothing -- to help them for 60 years, and we all know that. The Palestinian problem did not start in 1967. It started in 1948 when the Arabs attacked Israel and got their butts kicked. These people willingly relocated out of the Israeli territory, and their Arabs friends did nothing to help them. So please be honest and stop lying to us because we both know it is a lie. Once you do that, we can all move forward. Mr. Obama, we also want an apology for all those Christians and Jews kicked out of the Arab countries. While they have been really good on creating a lie about the Palestinians being kicked out of their land, they have done an excellent job of covering up all those people they kicked out. Well, they did not really kick them out. They offered them to convert or die. Moving was a much better option. If anyone wonders where all those Jews in Israel came from they should check it out. Maybe gays are not totally accepted in this society, but we have made great progress in the last 50 years. We may not agree on gay marriage, but we certainly agree on equal rights for gays. We don’t allow them to be killed just for being gay. How about the issue of freely elected democratic governments in the Muslim world? Not too many of those around, are there Mr. Obama? My mum is always the one who causes fights to begin. I sometimes feel like I'm to blame. I have always tried to stop them from these devastating fights, but it has been extremely difficult. My mom had decided that there's no need to stay here when nothing was holding us to. “Mum bolted into the kitchen with a tomato-red face and began to scream in a thundering voice.” She was on the phone a couple of seconds ago giggling!. "Amy pack your suitcase with everything you need were getting out of here today!" Mum screamed at me and pushed me up the stairs so I would start moving, "Shoo!" was her last word before I went to pack. He grants my every wish no matter how extreme they maybe. As I'm sure some of you are aware, a couple months ago the Iowa supreme court legalized gay marriage in their state by overturning the 170 year old definition of marriage deeming it as unconstitutional under the equal protection clause off their state constitution. My question is, was this the framers of the Iowa state constitution intentions in how the equal protection clause was to be used ? How can the equal protection clause be applied here when there are no rights or privileges being denied homosexuals that were being granted to anyone else ? Keep in mind that marriage is not a right, nor does it apply to those of the same sex ,so basically what the court did was redefine a word to create extra constitutional or uber-rights for homosexuals. In light of this ruling, what's to stop the court from changing that definition awarding rights to pedophiles wanting to marry a child ? Or a polygamist wanting to marry several wives ? Or someone wanting to marry an animal ? Is there any end to this madness ? . I have been a relationship for the past 5 1/2 years with my girlfriend and we are both still virgins. I felt horrible right after the initial act and my conscience went to work. I was a man with pride who would never even think of cheating but when that happened I found the ultimate weakness in myself. At first I didn't say anything for about a year and a half but she got the truth out of me. We broke up and decided to get back together a week later. I thought wow she really loves me and I haven't waivered sense but its her last year at school and shes graduating and one of her friends out there asked her to leave me and be with him. Example, in class, students respect their teacher out of duty. They respect their teacher as second parents. When teacher says something is right or wrong, they obey and follow. A nice or nephew can’t protest his or her aunt or uncle—by tradition—in an equivalent manner. The younger complain only in a lower manner, manner of respecting. So in real situation here, sometimes, youngers are pressured to get fault because the older can not loose face by recognizing their—older—fault. Once the attack finally ended Sikhs finally understood that the Indian government did not attack Harminder Sahib and other gurdawaras because of a “terrorist threat”, but because they did not want Sikhs to raise their voices and protest. From the day the massacre ended, Sikhs began to raise their voices, rebel and spread the gurus words. 1984 was a shocking year when the Indian government ordered the military to attack Darbar Sahib on may 31st under Operation Blue Star. The Indian government made false assumptions about the Sikhs when they said that they attacked Darbar Sahib because they thought that Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his supporters were keeping deadly weapons in the golden temple. Obviously that may or may not have been true because the public did not know of this terrible attack until it was all over since Punjab was the only target in the operation. Punjab is a Sikhs homeland that is why the Indian government attacked Darbar Sahib, because the government’s main goal was to invade the Sikhs main place of worship, Amritsar. Another reason or “excuse” the government made up to attack Darbar Sahib was that Bhindranwale and his supporters were apparently terrorists and that is why some people called him a controversial leader. Bhindranwale was called a controversial leader since people assumed he was a terrorist because he approached different kinds of people and let them know about Sikhism and he also protested about how the government treated the Sikhs like dirt. The Indian government revealed exaggerated propagandas like “terrorists threats”, since Bhindranwale and his followers were no terrorists the government had to make up an excuse and lie to the public in relation to why they really attacked Darbar Sahib. Bhindranwale was only a missionary trying to bring the Sikh youth back to order, he wanted the youthful Sikhs to follow the Khalsa Panth. Finally, the real reason the Indian government attacked Darbar Sahib was because they wanted the Sikhs to become Hindus and follow the states largest religion. The real reason why Darbar Sahib was attacked was covered by the lies and tricks the Indian government had played on the public. It was not difficult for the Sikhs to find out the truth behind why the government really attacked their temples. Some Hindus did not like Sikhs because they believed that they should be within the same religion and that Sikhism belongs to Hinduism, but Sikhs strongly opposed to that idea which led to violence. Sikhs were largely populating India and the government along with Indira Gandhi believed that the teachings of the Sikh gurus (equality) was unnecessary and so they discriminated against them by attacking temples. In the play “King Lear” King Lear demands his daughters take a love test to prove who loves him the most after this test he give as away his land to two of his daughters but not the third who refused to take part in his ridiculous demands this of coarse sparks the conflict. In Wuthering Heights Heathcliff is hell-bent on avenging those he believes have wronged him and gaining power all for his love Catherine. By examining both characters and their similarities, it is clear that they have many things in common. Both characters are extremely selfish and throughout both their stories it is this selfishness that leads to their ultimate downfall. Both characters can be interpreted as the stereotype of a powerful an with all the same flaws as one would expect from a powerful man. Lastly they both come to a final realization of how what they were doing would never cause them to be fulfilled however in both cases it is to late and they die shortly after. After examining both the characters of King Lear and Heathcliff, the following is clear, leading a life of selfishness, with stereotypical actions, and only near death coming to realization of what they have done wrong, will lead to dying and unfulfilled life. Selfishness is a flaw all people will fight with at some point in time. However if one was to live an entire life selfishly they risk living an unfulfilled life. This was the case for King Lear he lead a selfish life which cause all his loved ones to leave him. His selfishness again demonstrated after he gives away all responsibility and still want to keep his title of king and have 100 knights. It is Lear’s selfish nature that is the root of all his problems, had he not made the selfish decisions that he did at the beginning of the play it is very plausible that nothing bad would have happened with him and his daughters and there would be no conflict in his life. Had he not been selfish he would have been fulfilled at his death because he would likely had have the love that he originally had but lost due to his selfish ways. Heathcliff also suffered and unfulfilled life and death as a consequence of his selfishness. Unlike King Lear, he performed more than one selfish deed. Although Heathcliff is a much more evil character than Lear their selfishness is very similar. Heathcliff lead an entire life of selfishness, never caring about what other people thought, only ever looking to improve his life and bring his enemies down. His selfishness is best demonstrated through his relationship with his son Linton, he uses some he should love for his own personal gain, all this with complete disregard for Linton. His selfish manipulation of some one for his own gain is best seen when he is talking to Cathy and convinces her that “Linton is dying…none but you can save him” (Bronte. 220) although Linton is very sick Heathcliff knows that Cathy cannot save him and that his death is inevitable. Of coarse this was not the only selfish act Heathcliff took part in, even marrying Isabella is selfish because he did not marry her for love like people are meant to, he once again did this for his own selfish reasons. It is believed in many circles that suicide is the most selfish thing someone can do, and that is essentially how his life ends. It is evident that Heathcliff’s selfishness is the root and motivation behind everything he does and what causes his fulfillment. The selfishness of Heathcliff and King Lear are similar in many ways however, the main one is that their selfishness is what causes their failure to become fulfilled. The stereotypical man is usually considered angry, greed, violent and arrogant. However, if you give this stereotypical man power, all these characteristics are multiplied. King Lear is a perfect example of this stereotype. These characteristics are shown all through out the play as he pushes those who care about him away through these characteristics.
